Artist:David Essex
Song:Rock On
Album:'70s: Gold
In England, David Essex has had a lengthy career as a singer and actor. But in North America, he is mainly known for the 1974 top five hit Rock On. His singing career was a byproduct of his acting in stage and film musicals. He was born David Albert Cook July 23, 1947 in Essex, England. He started out recording for Decca in the 60s. But when his records flopped, he decided to turn to the stage and played the lead in the London cast of Godspell. He also appeared in the London production of Tommy. His big break in music came when he appeared on producer Jeff Wayne's War Of The Worlds concept album in 1973. This led to the starring role in the 1973 film That'll Be The Day. He sang Rock On in the film and it reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1974. He signed with Columbia and Jeff Wayne produced his debut album. Essex wrote this tribute to 50s music and icons like James Dean. That kind of nostalgia always appeals to listeners. You can get Rock On on this 2CD Hip-O various artists comp. Though David Essex never had another big hit in North America, he has had a lot of success in England as a singer and actor. He currently appears on the TV show East Enders.
