Leon Michels is a songwriter and producer who records as El Michels Affair on his own label. His music is instrumental like The Budos Band. He's part of the same New York neo soul scene. Michels was born in 1982 in New York City. He started out as a member of The Mighty Imperials who became The Soul Providers and they toured with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings for several years. He has produced albums for singer Lee Fields since 2002. Michels left The Dap-Kings to start El Michels Affair. Slide Show is from the 2005 debut album Sounding Out the City. Michels has recorded four albums for his own Big Crown label. He has a new album coming out in a couple of weeks. No doubt he tired of the road grind and studio work is more to his liking. Along with writing and producing, Michels plays sax, flute and bass. The musicians on the album are guys he plays with in other bands. Michels is a member of Menehan Street Band led by guitarist Thomas Brenneck. They back up soul singer Charles Bradley. When The Black Keys leader Dan Auerbach heard the 2009 Lee Fields album My World, he brought Michels to Las Vegas and they formed The Arcs who have released two albums.
