Album:Playlist: The Very Best of Sponge
Sponge had success in the mid-90s mostly on the Alternative Rock chart. They were classified as grunge with hard rock tendencies. That was a crowded market at the time. Sponge is from Detroit. Drummer Vinnie Dombroski, guitarist Mike Cross and bassist Tim Cross were in the band Loudhouse led by Kenny Mugwump. After a 1991 album on Virgin, Mugwump decided to get into acting so he left the band. Dombroski took over lead vocals and brought in drummer Jimmy Palluzzi. The band was renamed Sponge. They signed with Sony's Work Group label and released the 1994 album Rotting Pinata. The singles Plowed and Molly charted on the Alternative Rock chart. The album was certified Gold. The band write and produce themselves. Palluzzi was replaced by Chatlie Grover. Sponge toured to support the album and appeared on the late night talk shows. For the 1996 album Wax Ecstatic, Sponge was moved to Columbia. The band went for a more hard rock sound. Have You Seen Mary appeared in the 1997 film Chasing Amy. Columbia was unhappy with the album sales and Sponge was dropped. This budget comp covers the Columbia albums. Since then they have recorded for Beyond, Idol, Bellum, their own label and they currently record for Cleopatra. Sponge's latest album Lavatorium was released last year. Dombroski is the only original member. What happened at Sony? My guess is the label switch meant a cut to Sponge's promotion budget. More spending equals increased record sales. Here's the video for Have You Seen Mary by Sponge. The girl in the video is Beth Bladen. Per imdb, she appeared in two music videos.
