Artist:Dodie Stevens
Song:Pink Shoe Laces
Album:Real Wild Child
Dodie Stevens was 12 years old when Pink Shoe Laces debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1959. It was a top five hit and her only big hit. She was born Geraldine Ann Pasquale Feb. 17, 1946 in Chicago. She grew up in the San Gabriel Valley in California. At 8 years of age, she released Merry-Go Merry-Go Round as Geri Pace on Gold Star Records and performed it on Art Linkletter's House Party. Crystalette Records owner Carl Burns saw her on TV, signed her and renamed her Dodie Stevens. She recorded Pink Shoe Laces. When it got radio play, Dot Records picked it up for national distribution. It reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was written by Tony nominated actress Micki Grant and the record was produced by Bobby Hammack. He was usually a pianist in Red Nichols' band. Dodie recorded three albums for Dot but none of her other singles could recreate the success of Pink Shoe Laces. She got married at age 16, retired from music and moved to a farm in Missouri. The reissue label Jasmine has released a Dodie Stevens comp. But you can get Pink Shoe Laces on this 2CD various artists comp. After having a daughter and getting divorced, Dodie moved back to Los Angeles and joined Sergio Mendes & Brasil 77 as a backup singer. Other than releasing three 1969 country singles on World Pacific as Geraldine Stevens (one of them charted), Dodie has been a backup singer for years as Geri Stevens. She still tours and performs with her daughter. Here's Dodie Stevens performing Pink Shoe Laces on American Bandstand 1959.
