Big Bad Blog Video Theater-Joselyne Edwards vs Ji Yeon Kim

Here's the match video of Joselyne Edwards vs Ji Yeon Kim from last night's UFC show in Dallas. This fight is at Bantamweight. Kim's original opponent was supposed to be Mariya Agapova. When she pulled out, Joselyne was brought in on short notice. She normally fights at Flyweight. And then she missed weight. This is the kind of fight that should have been cancelled. Neither fighter is all that good. I thought Joselyne won the fight 29-28. But it was just filler and wasn't very good. Check it out for yourself.

Big Bad Blog Video Theater-Amanda Nunes vs Julianna Pena

Here's the match video of Amanda Nunes vs Julianna Pena from last night's UFC show in Dallas. Of course this was the rematch from December when Julianna won what has been described as the biggest upset in UFC history. Can she defend the title? This fight is what the first fight should have been. A dominant performance from Amanda. Her big change was leaving American Top Team to start her own team Lioness Studio in Sunrise, FL. This is a private gym. There are several coaches but the head coach is Roger Krahl. He owns the Sunrise branch of American Top Team. He was in her corner for some of her fights a few years ago. It is a great move. Amanda was more focused in this fight and she dominated Julianna for five rounds. She could have got a finish but chose not to. I scored it 50-44. Enjoy the video!

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Walter Wanderley

Artist:Walter Wanderley

Song:Summer Samba (Samba de Verao)

Album:Samba Swing!

Organist Walter Wanderley was one of several Brazilian musicians who had commercial success when Brazilian music was brought to the US in the 60s. Summer Samba was a top 30 hit in 1966. These days Wanderley is perceived as lounge music, kinda kitschy. He was born May 12, 1932 in Recife, Brazil. He learned piano as a child and studied musical theory as a teen. He moved to Sao Paulo in 1958 and made his recording debut in 1959. Wanderley accompanied his singer wife Isaurinha Garcia and they recorded six albums together. In the early 60s he worked with guys like Joao Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Wanderley's big break came when Tony Bennett spotted him while on tour in Brazil and decided to bring him to the US. He spoke to Verve Records producer Creed Taylor. Summer Samba was written by Marcos Valle. Wanderley's instrumental reached #26 on the Billboard Hot 100. It appeared on the 1966 album Rain Forest along with other Brazilian classics. Creed Taylor produced the album at Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey with Joe Grimm on flute, Urbie Green on trombone, Bucky Pizzarelli on guitar, Jose Marino on bass, Claudio Sion on drums and Bobby Rosengarden on percussion. Wanderley went on to accompany singer Astrud Gilberto. He moved to San Francisco and continued to perform until his death on Sept. 4, 1986 at age 54. Here's a video for Summer Samba by Walter Wanderley.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Rosie and the Originals

Artist:Rosie and the Originals

Song:Angel Baby

Album:Rock & Roll U.S.A. Vol. 2

Angel Baby was a top five hit in 1961. They were prevented from being much bigger by predatory record company contracts and attempts to hijack the song from lead singer and songwriter Rosie Hamlin. She was born July 21, 1945 in Klamath Falls, OR but she grew up in Anchorage, AK and then the San Diego suburb of National City, CA. Her father was a vaudeville performer. Her mother was Mexican. Rosie learned to play piano as a child. By age 13, Rosie was singing with a band and she wrote Angel Baby for her first boyfriend. Rosie and her friends recorded the song. After the record was played at a listening booth in a San Diego Kresge's store, Highland Records came calling and that's when the shenanigans started. They offered the group a record contract on the condition that they own the masters and the oldest member of the group David Ponce got the songwriting credit. They obviously thought they could get away with this because Rosie was underage. Rosie and the Originals opened for Jackie Wilson and appeared on American Bandstand. Angel Baby reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. As Highland was about to sell their contract to the much larger Brunswick Records, Rosie discovered she could not collect songwriting royalties as she was not listed as the songwriter. The legal action Rosie took to secure her copyright led to the split of Rosie and the Originals. Rosie signed a solo deal with Brunswick and released the 1961 album Lonely Blue Nights. Rosie wrote the songs with husband Noah Tafolla. When the album was unsuccessful, Rosie quit the music business. Rosie got some attention when John Lennon said in a 1969 interview how much he loved her voice. He recorded Angel Baby for his 1975 album Rock 'n' Roll but it was not released until 1986. Rosie returned to music in the 90s and toured the oldies circuit. Ace Records has attempted to release a Rosie and the Originals comp. But it has a lot of filler. So I recommend this Laurie Records various artists budget comp to get Angel Baby. Rosie Hamlin died on Mar. 30, 2017 at age 71. Here's Rosie Hamlin performing Angel Baby on a 2002 PBS oldies special.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Headstones

Artist:Headstones

Song:It's All Over

Album:Picture of Health

The Headstones were successful mostly in their native Canada. I would describe their music as post punk. It was always going to be a tough sell. They are still around. Headstones was formed in Kingston, ON in 1987 with lead singer Hugh Dillon, Trent Carr on guitar and Mark Gibson on drums. Dillon is also a successful actor. The band didn't last because of an antagonistic stage attitude and Dillon's drug problems. So Dillon split them up and reformed them in 1990 with Tim White on bass. A showcase gig in Toronto got them a record deal with MCA Canada. Picture of Health was their 1993 debut album. It was certified Platinum in Canada. It's All Over was the second single. It's typical of Headstones' music. Dale Harrison replaced Gibson for the 1995 album Teeth and Tissue. The band was nominated for Junos and had success in Canada. Attempts to break them in the US were unsuccessful. Universal in the US weren't interested. So MCA Canada dropped them after four albums. After a 2002 album on MapleMusic, Headstones split up. Dillon formed a new band the Hugh Dillon Redemption Choir and continued his acting career. That band released one album and Dillon released a 2009 solo album. He reformed Headstones in 2011 and they have released four albums, the most recent in 2019. As an actor, Dillon started out in Bruce McDonald films. But after he was a regular on the TV series Yellowstone, Dillon co-created and starred in the Paramount Plus series Mayor of Kingstown which has been renewed for season two. And he continues to be a regular on Yellowstone. I'm not sure how he has time for music. Here's the video for It's All Over by Headstones.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-The Carolina Chocolate Drops

Artist:The Carolina Chocolate Drops

Song:Hit 'Em Up Style

Album:Genuine Negro Jig

The Carolina Chocolate Drops (CCD) were a contemporary incarnation of what was known in the Southern US as an Old Timey String Band. The 2010 album Genuine Negro Jig won the Best Traditional Folk Album Grammy. It was their major label debut. An Old Timey String Band was a Carolina thing mostly with blacks. It's a mix of folk, blues and other musical styles. Most listeners have never heard of this and when I saw CCD live a few years ago, I fielded many questions about their music as I don't think most folks understood the music. Dom Flemons is from Phoenix. He grew up listening to folk music and he moved to North Carolina with Sule Greg Wilson and they met fiddler Rhiannon Giddens. At first the group was called Sankofa Strings but was changed to the more marketable Carolina Chocolate Drops. The music was a mix of country, blues, early jazz and other black music styles that were performed at 19th century minstrel shows. Flemons played banjo and other instruments and came up with a lot of business to explain the music. Rhiannon played fiddle and banjo and is a great singer. After releasing a couple of independent albums, CCD appeared in the 2007 film The Great Debaters. And that led to a contract with Warner's Nonesuch label. As I said the 2010 album Genuine Negro Jig won a Grammy. The music is a mix of traditional and original songs. The exception to this is their version of Blu Cantrell's hip hop classic Hit 'Em Up Style. This was the only time they did this. It must have been a gag to prove that they could do any kind of music in Old Timey style. By the time I saw them, Justin Robinson had been replaced by Hubby Jenkins and Adam Matta. And cellist Layla McCalla joined. Flemons left after the 2012 album Leaving Eden and that was the beginning of the end for CCD. Flemons has released three albums and is still interested in music history. Rhiannon has released four albums on Nonesuch and was a regular on the final two seasons of Nashville. Hubby Jenkins and Leyla McCalla have released solo albums. Leyla is currently signed to ANTI- Records. Here's The Carolina Chocolate Drops performing Hit 'Em Up Style at St. Louis radio station KDHX Sept. 26, 2009.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Temple of the Dog

Artist:Temple of the Dog

Song:Say Hello 2 Heaven

Album:Temple of the Dog: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition

Temple of the Dog was a one off group formed as a tribute to Mother Love Bone lead singer Andrew Wood after Wood died of a 1990 heroin overdose. This album led to the formation of Pearl Jam and that's when the album became popular. Soundgarden lead singer Chris Cornell was a one time roommate of Wood. After Wood's death, Cornell started writing songs in tribute. He asked Mother Love Bone's Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament if they would be interested in releasing the songs as a single. They decided to turn it into an album. They added Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron and future Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready. The whole thing was recorded in two weeks. Meanwhile Gossard, Ament and McCready were forming a new band and Eddie Vedder came in to audition. That audition was the Temple of the Dog lead single Hunger Strike. And that led to the formation of Pearl Jam. Though Cornell was happy with Temple of the Dog, it seemed to get overshadowed by Pearl Jam's initial success until A&M Records decided to use that success to promote the album. Temple of the Dog was certified Platinum in 1992 which was two years after the album was released. The album was released in 2016 with a second CD of demos and outtakes. Temple of the Dog reunited occasionally and Cornell performed the songs in his own band. They toured in 2016 to celebrate Temple of the Dog's 25th anniversary. That was their only official tour. Here's Chris Cornell performing Say Hello 2 Heaven on MSN Control Room.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Guy Clark

Artist:Guy Clark

Song:Desperadoes Waiting for a Train

Album:The Essential Guy Clark

Though Guy Clark was never a commercially successful recording artist, he was revered by other singers for the quality of his songs. In that sense he's very similar to Townes Van Zandt. He was born Nov. 6, 1941 in Monahans, TX. His family moved to Rockport in 1954. After graduating from high school, Clark and his wife lived in Houston until they moved to Nashville in the early 70s. And that's when he started having success as a songwriter. Jerry Jeff Walker recorded Desperadoes Waiting for a Train on his 1973 album Viva Terlingua. Then it appeared on Rita Coolidge's 1974 album Fall into Spring, David Allan Coe's 1974 album The Mysterious Rhinestone Cowboy and Tom Rush's 1974 album Ladies Love Outlaws. Clark signed with RCA and recorded Desperadoes Waiting for a Train on his 1975 debut album Old No. 1. Desperadoes Waiting for a Train charted when The Highwaymen recorded it in 1985. And that's how things went for Clark. He recorded two albums for RCA, three for Warner Bros, three for Asylum and then for the smaller labels Sugar Hill and Dualtone. This budget comp covers Clark's RCA recordings. Clark's successful songs include Ricky Skaggs 1982 cover of Heartbroke, Vince Gill's 1985 cover of Oklahoma Borderline, John Conlee's 1987 cover of The Carpenter, Steve Warriner's 1988 cover of Baby I'm Yours and Rodney Crowell's 1989 single She's Crazy for Leavin' which Crowell wrote with Clark. Clark credited Townes Van Zandt as a major influence. The two were best friends until Van Zandt's 1997 death. They recorded a live album with Steve Earle called Together at the Bluebird Cafe. Earle released the tribute album Guy in 2019. Clark continued to perform and record until his death on May 17, 2016 at age 74. Here's Guy Clark performing Desperadoes Waiting for a Train on Austin City Limits 1977.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Elmore Nixon

Artist:Elmore Nixon

Song:Married Woman Blues

Album:Houston Might Be Heaven: Rockin' R&B in Texas 1947-1951

Though Elmore Nixon recorded a handful of singles, he was mostly a sideman playing piano in Houston blues bands of the late 40s. Married Woman Blues is good enough that Nixon should have gotten the opportunity to record more. He was born Nov. 17, 1933 in Crowley, LA. His family moved to Houston in 1939. Nixon learned to play piano in church. By the time he was a teen, he was playing local clubs most notably with singer and guitarist Peppermint Harris. He was also in alto saxophonist Henry Hayes' Four Kings. Nixon recorded a handful of singles from 1950-52 for Peacock, Savoy and Mercury. Married Woman Blues isn't listed on any discographies. But it looks like it was on Mercury in 1952. Nixon returned to being a sideman, most notably for Zydeco legend Clifton Chenier and blues legend Lightnin' Hopkins in the 60s. Married Woman Blues appears on this box set from the reissue label JSP. There's a lot of Peppermint Harris on this. I'm pretty sure Nixon played piano on those records. After serious surgery in 1970, Nixon died in June 1975. Here's a video for Married Woman Blues by Elmore Nixon.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Moving Hearts

Artist:Moving Hearts

Song:McBride's

Album:Donal Lunny's Definitive Moving Hearts

Though they were only together for a couple of years in the 80s, Moving Hearts had an impact on Irish music that still resonates today. Moving Hearts was formed in 1981 by Planxty's Donal Lunny and Christy Moore. The idea was to mix traditional Irish music with rock which is what Horslips did before they split up in 1980. With that in mind, one time Horslips member Declan Sinnott was brought in to play lead guitar. Other members were Davy Spillane on ulleann pipes, Keith Donald on alto sax, Eoghan O'Neill on bass and Brian Calnan on drums. Moving Hearts signed with Warner Bros. and Lunny produced their 1981 debut album Moving Hearts. That and their 1982 album The Dark End of the Street were successful. But Moore left to go solo  and that's when things started to fall apart. There were other changes including Sinnott's departure. They released a live album in 1983 followed by the 1985 album The Storm. By that time, Moving Hearts had already stopped touring and they split up shortly after the album release. This comp is available as a digital download. Moving Hearts had a very successful reunion in 2007 that produced a live album and DVD. Lunny, O'Neill, Donald and Spillane are the original members on the album. The band continues to reunite occasionally. They are on a brief tour right now. Here's Moving Hearts performing McBride's from the Live in Dublin DVD.

Big Bad Blog Video Theater-Victoria Leonardo vs Mandy Bohm

Here's the match video of Victoria Leonardo vs Mandy Bohm from today's UFC show in London. This fight is at Flyweight. Neither fighter has won in the UFC. Victoria broke her arm twice in her previous losses. She trains in Shreveport, LA with her long time coach Brent Mason. Mandy is from Germany. But after her loss, she moved to Las Vegas to train with Eric Nicksick at Xtreme Couture. Mandy has a significant reach advantage. But you won't know it by watching this fight. I didn't think either fighter looked good but Mandy looked inept. I scored it 30-27 for Victoria but I doubt she can beat anyone good. Enjoy the video!

Big Bad Blog Video Theater-Molly McCann vs Hannah Goldy

Here's the match video of Molly McCann vs Hannah Goldy from today's UFC show in London. This fight is at Flyweight. Of course Molly is from Liverpool and a big favorite at home. She won her last fight with a spinning back fist and fans are looking for a similar result. Hannah trains at Fusion X-Cel in Orlando. She won her last UFC fight but clearly she is here to lose. And sure enough Molly got a first round finish win with a spinning back elbow. And the fans went crazy. I was not surprised. So is Molly that good? No, the UFC is giving her inferior opposition to pander to the fans. We've seen her lose to better fighters. Enjoy the video!.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Aaron "Pinetop" Sparks

Artist:Aaron "Pinetop" Sparks

Song:Every Day I Have the Blues

Album:When the Sun Goes Down Vol. 3

Bluesman Aaron "Pinetop" Sparks is forgotten today because he died young. But he deserves to be remembered for writing the blues standard Every Day I Have the Blues. Sparks usually recorded with his brother. This 1935 recording is one of a handful of solo recordings. Along with his twin brother Marion, Sparks was born Aaron Gant May 22,1910 in Corona, Lee County, MS. They took their stepfather's surname. After moving to St. Louis in 1920, The brothers formed a boogie woogie group with Marion singing and Aaron playing piano. They first recorded in 1932 as Pinetop and Lindberg for Bluebird and Decca. That's when they first recorded Every Day I Have the Blues which they wrote. Of course that song is now a blues standard. Memphis Slim recorded it in 1949. The best known recordings are by The Count Basie Orchestra featuring Joe Williams and B.B. King. Pinetop Sparks usually let his brother do the singing. He branched out on this 1935 recording for Bluebird with Henry Townsend on guitar. You can get it on this various artists comp. He billed himself as Pine Top after Pinetop Smith. Aaron "Pinetop" Sparks died on Nov. 5, 1935 at age 25. The talk at the time was the twins got into an argument and Marion poisoned Aaron. Marion was known to have a bad temper. Townsend said that Aaron was a heavy drinker and he was constantly playing gigs with no sleep and that's what killed him. Either way, Aaron "Pinetop" Sparks deserves to be remembered for Every Day I Have the Blues. Here's a video of Every Day I Have the Blues by Aaron "Pinetop" Sparks.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Big Daddy Weave

Artist:Big Daddy Weave

Song:Every Time I Breathe

Album:The Ultimate Collection

Big Daddy Weave is a very successful CCM group. The 2006 single Every Time I Breathe was their first CCM chart topper. Big Daddy Weave was formed in Mobile, AL in 1998. Mike Weaver was leading a youth worship group in Florida when it was suggested that he study at the University of Mobile. And that's where he formed Big Daddy Weave. Weaver is the lead singer and main songwriter. His brother Jay Weaver played bass. The other members are Jeremy Redmon on guitar, Jeff Jones on drums and Joe Shirk on keyboards and sax. After releasing a 2001 album independently, Big Daddy Weave signed with Fervent Records. As I said, Mike Weaver writes most of the songs. Redmon handles production. Every Time I Breathe is from their 2006 album of the same name. Though they had chart success before this, Every Time I Breathe was the first single to top the CCM charts. Mike Weaver says the success came at a good time as the band seemed to be getting in a rut. So they needed a boost. The other thing was Word Records bought Fervent in 2006 and it's likely that they increased Big Daddy Weave's promotion budget. That investment has paid off as Big Daddy Weave have been consistent sellers including when the 2012 single Redeemed was certified Platinum. This comp is a good intro to Big Daddy Weave's music. But it was released in 2011 so it doesn't have any recent songs. Word should do something about that. Word closed Fervent so the 2019 album When the Light Comes is on Curb/Word. That's their latest album. Sadly Jay Weaver died of COVID-19 on Jan. 2, 2002 at age 42. Big Daddy Weave has been on tour but I don't think a replacement has been named. Mike Weaver appeared on the recent Katy Nichole EP. Here's the video for Every Time I Breathe by Big Daddy Weave.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-The Plimsouls

Artist:The Plimsouls

Song:A Million Miles Away

Album:Geffen Vintage 80s Vol. 1

The 80s band The Plimsouls had their greatest success when A Million Miles Away appeared in the 1983 film Valley Girl. The problem was by the time the film was released, the band split up. The Plimsouls were formed in Paramount, CA in 1978. Singer songwriter guitarist Peter Case was leader of The Nerves. After they split up, Case formed The Plimsouls with bassist Dave Pahoa and drummer Louie Ramirez. After guitarist Eddie Munoz joined, they released an EP and then a 1981 album released by Planet Records. When the single A Million Miles Away was played by influential KROQ DJ Rodney Bingenheimer, they got a deal with Geffen Records. The Plimsouls performed A Million Miles Away in the 1983 film Valley Girl and it appeared on the 1983 album Everywhere at Once. But the album didn't do well and The Plimsouls split up. For years the Valley Girl soundtrack was unavailable due to music rights. Rhino finally released it in 1994 but it is too expensive. You can get A Million Miles Away on this various artists budget CD. Case has recorded solo first for Geffen and then folk rock for Vanguard. The Plimsouls have reunited a couple of times. Munoz currently leads a version of the band. Here's the video for A Million Miles Away by The Plimsouls.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-The Raconteurs

Artist:The Raconteurs

Song:Steady, As She Goes

Album:Broken Boy Soldiers

The White Stripes leader Jack White started The Raconteurs as a side project. He turned it into a band when the 2006 single Steady, As She Goes charted. White and singer songwriter Brendan Benson live in the same neighborhood in Detroit. Benson had released two albums on Virgin Records. White stopped by Benson's house and Benson played him a demo of Steady, As She Goes. White liked the demo but there was only one verse. So White helped Benson finish the song, White brought in bassist Jack Lawrence and drummer Patrick Keeler of The Greenhornes to record an album. The band name was The Raconteurs and the 2006 album Broken Boy Soldiers was released on White's Third Man label with Warner distribution. The single Steady, As She Goes topped the Alternative chart and reached #54 on the Billboard Hot 100. They toured to support it. Though The Raconteurs has been dubbed as a supergroup, White insists that they didn't plan on forming a band. After the success, The Raconteurs released the 2008 album Consolers of the Lonely. They toured to support it and got a couple of Grammy nominations. When the album wasn't as successful, White put The Raconteurs on the back burner and returned to his other projects. Benson recorded solo. Lawrence joined The Dead Weather. Keeler rejoined The Greenhornes and later joined The Afghan Whigs. The Raconteurs returned with the 2019 album Help Me Stranger. They toured and released a live album and EP. White is currently on tour. It remains to be seen if he will continue The Raconteurs. Here's the video for Steady, As She Goes by The Raconteurs. There are two videos for this. I thought this one directed by Paul Reubens was amusing. The other one was directed by Jim Jarmusch.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Quad City DJ's

Artist:Quad City DJ's

Song:Space Jam

Album:Space Jam: Music from and Inspired by the Motion Picture

Though it's not their biggest hit, Quad City DJ's theme from the 1996 film Space Jam is their most memorable song as the film was such a big hit. Johnny "Jay Ski" McGowan and Nathaniel "C.C. Lemonhead" Orange were high school classmates in Jacksonville, FL. Both guys were fans of Breakbeat and Miami bass. After releasing a few singles as Chill Deal, they produced female rapper Icey J and the group Three Grand. After Chill Deal dissolved, McGowan and Orange formed 95 South. They scored a hit with the 1993 single Whoot, There It Is which was very similar to Tag Team's Whoomp! (There It Is). They left 95 South and formed Quad City DJ's. They scored a top five pop hit with the 1996 single C'mon and Ride It (The Train) on Atlantic's Big Beat label. The album Get Up and Dance was certified Platinum. Then they were asked to contribute the theme for the 1996 film Space Jam. The single only reached #37 on the Billboard Hot 100. But the video was played in heavy rotation on MTV. So it's their most memorable song. The singer is Tamara Wallace of Funky Green Dogs. Space Jam was certified 6XPlatinum. It looks like Quad City DJ's split up after that. They reformed briefly to record Brand New Jam for the 2021 sequel Space Jam: A New Legacy. It wasn't used in the film nor does it appear on the soundtrack. Here's the video for Space Jam by Quad City DJ's.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-The Avett Brothers

Artist:The Avett Brothers

Song:Ain't No Man

Album:True Sadness

The folk rock group The Avett Brothers are a very successful album and touring band. The 2016 album True Sadness and the single Ain't No Man were successful in the Adult Alternative market. Scott and Seth Avett are from Concord, NC. Their father played guitar. So they have played music since they were kids. Seth had the band Margo in high school. Scott had the band Nemo in college. After the two bands merged, Nemo released three albums. The Avetts started experimenting with acoustic music and performed locally as The Back Porch Project or Nemo Downstairs. Along with Nemo guitarist John Twomey, they released a 2000 EP as The Avett Brothers. After Nemo split up, bassist Bob Crawford of the Memphis Quick 50 joined The Avett Brothers. After releasing a 2002 album on their own label, The Avett Brothers signed with local label Ramseur Records. For the 2007 album Emotionalism, cellist Joe Kwon joined The Avett Brothers. They appeared on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. They also won a couple of Americana Music Awards. Then they signed with Rick Rubin's American Recordings. Rubin has produced all their albums since then. Ain't No Man is from the 2016 album True Sadness. The single Ain't No Man topped the Adult Alternative chart. The Avett Brothers were nominated for a couple of Grammys. A documentary about the making of the album aired on HBO. There was criticism that the album was too commercial. It's available as a budget CD. The Avett Brothers latest album The Third Gleam was released in 2020. They have been touring but Scott Avett tested positive for COVID-19 so some shows will be rescheduled. Here's the video for Ain't No Man by The Avett Brothers.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Thad Jones

Artist:Thad Jones

Song I'll Remember April

Album:The Complete Albums Collection 1954-1959

Most jazz fans should be familiar with trumpeter Thad Jones' big band recordings. But you may not be familiar with his 50s recordings as a leader. He was born Mar. 28, 1923 in Pontiac, MI. His older brother was pianist Hank Jones. His younger brother was drummer Elvin Jones. A self taught musician, Jones began to play professionally at age 16. He played in US Army bands during WWII. After his military service, Jones played in various Midwest bands until he joined Count Basie in 1954. At the same time Jones recorded as a leader for Charles Mingus' Debut label. So Jones could have had a solo career but he seemed to prefer being in a big band. I'll Remember April is from the 1954 10 inch LP The Fabulous Thad Jones. This was Jones' debut as a leader. Musicians are Frank Wess on tenor sax and flute, Hank Jones on piano, Charles Mingus on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums. I'll Remember April is a jazz standard written by Gene de Paul, Patricia Johnston and Don Raye. Dick Foran sang it in the 1942 film Ride 'Em Cowboy. Woody Herman was the first to record it in 1942. The song was never a big hit but it became popular with jazz musicians after Charlie Parker recorded it on the 1950 album Charlie Parker with Strings. Mingus reissued these recordings in 1957 with some recordings from Thad Jones/Charles Mingus Jazz Collaborations Vol. 1 on a 12 inch LP called Thad Jones. Jones also recorded for Blue Note, Prestige and United Artists. All these albums are on this 4CD box set from the reissue label Enlightenment. After Jones left the Basie band in 1963, Jones formed The Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra in 1965. They were very successful until Jones moved to Denmark in 1979. He became leader of The Danish Radio Big Band. After Count Basie's death, Jones returned to the US to take over the Basie band. But he got sick and died on Aug. 20, 1986 at age 63. Here's a video of I'll Remember April by Thad Jones.

Big Bad Blog Video Theater-Emily Ducote vs Jessica Penne

Here's the match video for Emily Ducote vs Jessica Penne from today's UFC show in Long Island. This fight is at Strawweight. Jessica is a former title contender. But that was a long time ago. And at 39 years old, I'm surprised she's still fighting. She trains at Alliance in San Diego. Angela Hill was in her corner. Emily was making her UFC debut. But she fought in Bellator as a Flyweight. In May she won the Invicta Strawweight Championship. Emily is 28 years old and she trains at American Top Team in Oklahoma City with Giulliano Gallupi. Emily destroyed Jessica with calf kicks. She was limping around so much I thought the fight would be stopped. I scored it 30-27 for Emily. One judge scored it the same and the other two scored it 29-28 for Emily. They gave Jessica round two. A good UFC debut for Emily. Maybe Jessica should retire. Enjoy the video!

Big Bad Blog Video Theater-Lauren Murphy vs Miesha Tate

Here's the match video for Lauren Murphy vs Miesha Tate from today's UFC show in Long Island. This is Miesha's Flyweight debut. After Miesha lost her comeback fight, I was not surprised she dropped to Flyweight. The real answer is a fighter can't go away for six years and expect to be the same fighter. Lauren is three years older than Miesha. But she was never an elite fighter and she never stopped fighting. Lauren is now training at Elevation Fight Team in Aurora, CO with former Bellator fighter Carringron Banks. Lauren won the fight fairly easily. Miesha looked slow and as I said, she isn't the same fighter. So I scored the fight 30-27 for Lauren. Two of the judges scored it the same. The third scored it 29-28. Maybe Miesha should retire. Enjoy the video!

Big Bad Blog Video Theater-Amanda Lemos vs Michelle Waterson-Gomez

Here's the video of Amanda Lemos vs Michelle Waterson-Gomez from today's UFC show in Long Island. This fight is at Strawweight. Michelle is a veteran fighter known as The Karate Hottie. She's a former Invicta Atomweight champ. So she's undersized for Strawweight. She has trained for years at Jackson Wink in Albuquerque. Amanda is from Para, Brazil. She trains at Marajo Brothers which is UFC fighter Iuri Alcantara and his brother. She's big enough to be a Flyweight. Because Amanda lost her last fight to Jessica Andrade for being overaggressive, she was cautious in round one. So not much happened. In round two, Michelle went for a takedown. Amanda turned it into a guillotine and that was it. I thought Michelle might retire but she didn't. Good win for Amanda. Enjoy the video.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Christian Scott

Artist:Christian Scott

Song:K.K.P,D.

Album:Yesterday You Said Tomorrow

Jazz trumpeter Christian Scott has deep roots in the New Orleans jazz scene and the New Orleans Black Indians. He calls himself Chief Xuan a Tunde Adjuah. He has recorded as a leader since 2002. He was born Mar. 31, 1983 in New Orleans. His uncle is jazz saxophonist Donald Harrison Jr. Harrison and his father Donald Harrison Sr. are chiefs in the New Orleans Black Indians. Scott's twin brother is writer director Kiel Adrian Scott. Scott was tutored by his uncle as a teen. Scott appeared on Harrison's albums. He went to high school at New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. He got a scholarship to attend Berklee in Boston and graduated in 2004. While there he started his own label and and released his first recordings. Scott signed with Concord Records in 2006. K.K.P.D. is from his 2010 album Yesterday You Said Tomorrow. This was Scott's third studio album for Concord. He also released a live album. Scott says the album was influenced by Miles Davis' 60s recordings while incorporating contemporary jazz elements. Scott wrote most of the songs. K.K.P.D. stands for Ku Klux Police Department so it's obviously social commentary. Scott's main collaborator on his Concord albums was Canadian guitarist Matthew Stevens. He is currently in Esperanza Spalding's band. Other musicians are Milton Fletcher Jr. on piano, Kristopher Keith Funn on bass and Jamire Williams on drums. Scott switched to Ropeadope Records in 2015. His latest album Axiom was released in 2020. It was recorded live at the Blue Note in New York. Scott is touring again and I expect a new album soon. Here is Christian Scott with Matthew Stevens, Lawrence Fields, Kris Funn and Jamire Williams performing K.K.P.D. for New York's WBGO Jazz 88.3 FM and NPRmusic present The Checkout Live at Berklee School of Music in Boston 2010.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-AverySunshine

Artist:AverySunshine

Song:Ugly Part of Me

Album:Avery*Sunshine

AverySunshine is not only a great singer but she writes and produces her own music. She has also been a musical director on Broadway. So why isn't she a big star? I will present my theory. She was born Denise Nicole White May 22, 1975 in Chester, PA. She began playing piano at age 8. Her aunt was a church choir director. After asking Denise to fill in for her, churches all over the region asked for her. Denise was musical director for the Wilmington/Chester Mass Choir. She moved to Atlanta to attend Spelman College. When Denise didn't like the music program, she graduated with a degree in philosophy. While in college, Denise formed DaisyRew with Maia Nkenge Wilson and played local clubs. After Maia was cast in a Broadway show, Denise became Minister of Music at St. Paul AME Church in Atlanta. Then she met guitarist Dana "Big Dane" Johnson and they started working on music together. He had previously worked with India.Arie. The name change to AverySunshine was likely his idea. They got married. Ugly Part of Me is from Avery's 2010 debut album on her own BigShine label. The song is pretty funny especially Lil John Roberts' reactions. He plays drums on the album. The album was written and produced by Avery and Johnson along with Daniel Moore who had worked previously with Ann Nesby. He still works with Avery. Her latest album was released in 2017. She still records for her own label with Shanachie distribution. They aren't a traditional record label. They're just a distributor. And that's the main reason AverySunshine isn't a big star. She would need someone to spend money to promote her. She's 47 years old so that's not happening. Avery has also worked on Broadway and as a pianist for Tyler Perry, Jennifer Holiday, Michael Buble and others. She still tours but she can do plenty of things. She's very talented. Here's the video for Ugly Part of Me by AverySunshine.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-George Cates & His Orchestra

Artist:George Cates & His Orchestra f/The Stan Wrightsman Quartet

Song:Moonglow/Theme from Picnic

Album:Hard to Find Orchestral Instrumentals II

This 1956 medley recorded to promote the premiere of the film Picnic reached #4 on the pop charts and sold over a million copies. George Cates was musical director for Lawrence Welk and head of A&R at Decca's Coral label. So he was mostly a behind the scenes guy. This was his only hit single. Cates was born Oct. 19, 1911. After graduating from New York University, He worked on the Olsen and Johnson revue Hellzapoppin. He played sax in bands led by Henry Busse, Dick Stabile and Russ Morgan, After serving in the US Navy during WWII, Cates moved to Los Angeles and became Lawrence Welk's musical director in 1951. Cates worked for Welk for the entire run of his TV show until 1982. He was also made A&R director at Coral Records working with The Andrews Sisters, Teresa Brewer and Danny Kaye. This recording of Moonglow and the theme from the film Picnic looks like it was cooked up by Columbia Pictures to promote the film's premiere. They released an EP featuring The Tonight Show creator and jazz pianist Steve Allen playing George Duning's theme from the new film Picnic and Cates and his orchestra performing Moonglow and then the theme from Picnic. The quartet on Moonglow is led by pianist Stan Wrightsman with George Van Eps on guitar, Phil Stephens on bass and Nick Fatool on drums. The record reached #4 on the pop charts. You can get it on this various artists CD of instrumental versions of movie and TV themes from the reissue label Eric Records. Cates went into semi-retirement after the Welk show ended in 1982. He died on May 10, 2002 at age 90. Here's a video of Moonglow/Theme from Picnic by George Cates & His Orchestra.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Dodie Stevens

Artist:Dodie Stevens

Song:Pink Shoe Laces

Album:Real Wild Child

Dodie Stevens was 12 years old when Pink Shoe Laces debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1959. It was a top five hit and her only big hit. She was born Geraldine Ann Pasquale Feb. 17, 1946 in Chicago. She grew up in the San Gabriel Valley in California. At 8 years of age, she released Merry-Go Merry-Go Round as Geri Pace on Gold Star Records and performed it on Art Linkletter's House Party. Crystalette Records owner Carl Burns saw her on TV, signed her and renamed her Dodie Stevens. She recorded Pink Shoe Laces. When it got radio play, Dot Records picked it up for national distribution. It reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was written by Tony nominated actress Micki Grant and the record was produced by Bobby Hammack. He was usually a pianist in Red Nichols' band. Dodie recorded three albums for Dot but none of her other singles could recreate the success of Pink Shoe Laces. She got married at age 16, retired from music and moved to a farm in Missouri. The reissue label Jasmine has released a Dodie Stevens comp. But you can get Pink Shoe Laces on this 2CD various artists comp. After having a daughter and getting divorced, Dodie moved back to Los Angeles and joined Sergio Mendes & Brasil 77 as a backup singer. Other than releasing three 1969 country singles on World Pacific as Geraldine Stevens (one of them charted), Dodie has been a backup singer for years as Geri Stevens. She still tours and performs with her daughter. Here's Dodie Stevens performing Pink Shoe Laces on American Bandstand 1959.

Big Bad Blog Video Theater-Antonina Shevchenko vs Cortney Casey

Here's the match video of Antonina Shevchenko vs Cortney Casey from last night's UFC show in Las Vegas. This fight is at Flyweight. Antonina is the older sister of Flyweight champ Valentina. She fights the same style but isn't as good. Cortney has been in the UFC since 2015. She trains at MMA Lab in Phoenix with coach John Crouch. Both have had mixed success. It was a close fight but not a very good one. Cortney doesn't do enough to win fights and that continued here. Crouch was yelling at her through the entire fight so he knows this is Cortney's problem. By the time she got her act together it was too late. The first two rounds were very close but I scored both rounds 10-9 for Antonina. She was marginally better but it was more that Cortney needed to do more. I do not believe in stealing rounds and neither should she. Cortney was better in round three. But I thought she already lost the fight. So I scored the fight 29-28 for Antonina. Two of the judges scored it the same. The third judge scored round one for Cortney so Antonina won by split decision. As I said, round one was very close but the decision was correct. It doesn't make me think Antonina can beat anyone good. Last night someone on Twitter said that Cortney has lost four times by split decision. That just reflects her main problem. She's not aggressive enough. And Crouch can't seem to get her to change. Enjoy the video!

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Stroke 9

Artist:Stroke 9

Song:Little Black Backpack

Album:Nasty Little Thoughts

Stroke 9 will probably remind you of similar pop bands of the late 90s. The 1999 single Little Black Backpack from the album Nasty Little Thoughts is their biggest hit to date. The formation of Stroke 9 was in a 1990 Rock Band class at Marin Academy in San Rafael, CA. Singer and guitarist Luke Esterkyn and bassist Greg Gueldner opted to form a band and record a demo for extra credit. Esterkyn and Gueldner attended different colleges so the band didn't stay together. But they reunited in 1995 and released a couple of albums independently. This got them a record deal with producer Jolene Cherry's Cherry label with Universal distribution. She produced soundtrack albums like The Crow and Batman Forever. She started her own label in 1997. By this time the band was Esterkyn on vocals and guitar, Gueldner on bass, John McDermott on guitar and Eric Stock on drums. The 1999 album Nasty Little Thoughts was their major label debut. The single Little Black Backpack reached #6 on the Modern Rock chart and the album was certified Gold. So it did OK. Most of the album was produced by Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads who by this time was a successful producer. Stroke 9 appeared in Ron Howard's film EdTV. The 2002 album Rip It Off didn't do nearly as well. An attempt was made to tie the single Kick Some Ass into the 2001 film Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back but it didn't work. Jolene Cherry's name is not on the credits. It makes me think the band split with her. Stroke 9 left Universal. After releasing two albums on the indie label Rock Ridge, Stroke 9 released a 2020 album on their own label. So Stroke 9 is still around but they should have been more successful. Here's the video for Little Black Backpack by Stroke 9.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Mylon LeFevre

Artist:Mylon LeFevre

Song:Gospel Ship

Alnum:The Definitive Collection

Mylon LeFevre grew up in gospel music. In the early 70s he recorded secular music. By the 80s he became a popular CCM artist. He was born Oct. 6, 1944 in Gulfport, MS. He started out as a child performing in the family gospel group The LeFevres. They were legends of southern gospel. While in the US Army, LeFevre wrote his first song Without Him. After performing it on a gospel music convention in Memphis, Elvis Presley recorded Without Him on the album How Great Thou Art. The royalty cheques convinced LeFevre that he had a future in the music business. After leaving the army, LeFevre was a member of the southern gospel group The Stamps Quartet and he released a couple of solo albums. But he wanted to record gospel music in a contemporary style. LeFevre signed with Atlantic's Cotillion label and today the 1970 album Mylon is considered to be the first Contemporary Christian Music album. This album was produced in New Orleans by Allen Toussaint. The band on the album are guys he took on the road as The Holy Smoke Doo Dah Band. This includes Auburn Burrell on guitar and bass. He would become a session musician. Guitarist Barry Bailey who would soon join Atlanta Rhythm Section. Pianist Dean Daughtry was also in Atlanta Rhythm Section. Ron Graybeal was on bass and Kin Venable was on drums. Old Gospel Ship is a rock interpretation of a traditional gospel song. Sadly, this album has never been released on CD or mp3. One would think an album this historically significant would merit a rerelease. Paging Wounded Bird Records. LeFevre would record the same song as Gospel Ship on the 1985 album Sheep in Wolves Clothing. That is on this comp. LeFevre recorded for Columbia, Warner Bros. and Mercury. After seeing a 2nd Chapter of Acts concert, LeFevre formed Broken Heart and they were very successful in the 80s. LeFevre hasn't recorded since 2003. He and his wife live in Texas and preach in various churches. Here's Mylon LeFevre performing Jesus Is a Waymaker and Old Gospel Ship on a 1971 TV show.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-AfroCubism

Artist:AfroCubism

Song:Djelimady Rumba

Album:Afrocubism

Raise your hand if you enjoyed the 1997 documentary Buena Vista Social Club. And shame on you if you haven't seen it. It can be streamed on The Criterion Channel which you should subscribe to anyway. This film had Ry Cooder travel to Havana to give exposure to long forgotten Cuban musicians. The film was so successful there was even a sequel. But did you know that what became Buena Vista Social Club was not World Circuit Records owner Nick Gold's original plan. The plan was to bring Malian musicians to Cuba and call it AfroCubism. When the Cuban visas for the Malian musicians didn't come through, Gold asked Cooder to go to Cuba and the rest is history. But Gold still wanted to do Afrocubism. He decided to record it in Spain to avoid visa problems. The leader of the Cuban musicians was Eliades Ochoa who was in Buena Vista Social Club. The Malian musicians were led by guitarist Djelimady Tounkara and Toumani Diabate on kora. The songs are a mix of Malian originals and Cuban standards. Djielimady Rumba was was written by Tounkara. The album AfroCubism was released in 2010 and they toured to support it. From what I can tell, this was only supposed to be a one shot deal. But the album is certainly worth checking out. Here's AfroCubism performing Djielimady Rumba at Bataclan in Paris May 12,2010. This video is on YouTube but the Daily Motion version is better quality.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-The Impalas

Artist:The Impalas

Song:Sorry (I Ran All the Way Home)

Album:Sorry (I Ran All the Way Home)

The doo wop group The Impalas scored a top five hit with the 1959 single Sorry (I Ran All the Way Home). The song is still a staple of oldies radio. So I'm sure most folks have heard it but know nothing about The Impalas. They were a racially integrated group from Brooklyn. That was unusual but not unheard of. The Del-Vikings and The Crests were also integrated. Lenny Renda, Richard Wagner and Tony Carlucci were practicing on street corners when Joe "Speedo" Frazier heard them and thought he could help them with their harmonies. Frazier was the lead singer of The Impalas. After releasing one unsuccessful single, they were spotted by songwriters Artie Zwirn and Aristedes Giosasi. Giosasi was one half of the brother sister duo Gino & Gina. They scored a top 20 hit with the 1958 single Pretty Baby. Zwirn and Giosasi wrote Sorry (I Ran All the Way Home) and they thought it would be a good song for The Impalas. An introduction to Alan Freed got them a deal with MGM's Cub label. Sorry was the first single and it reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Impalas appeared on American Bandstand and toured the Freed circuit with Frankie Avalon etc. They had one other chart single and their one album was reissued by Jasmine Records last year. Sorry also appears on plenty of  various artists comps. That album was produced by MGM house producer LeRoy Holmes. He also produced the 1958 Tommy Edwards hit It's All in the Game. After an unsuccessful 1963 single on 20th Century Fox, all but Frazier quit the music business. Frazier led a version of The Impalas on the nostalgia circuit. He died in 2014. Here's The Impalas performing Sorry (I Ran All the Way Home) on American Bandstand. Yes, the vocals are overdubbed. I presume the audio quality was subpar. At least you get to see what The Impalas were like.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Silk Sonic

Artist:Silk Sonic

Song:Leave the Door Open

Album:An Evening with Silk Sonic

Here's an album by two guys who are already famous and this just made them more famous. Leave the Door Open topped the charts and Silk Sonic won several awards. I would describe the music as retro soul. So I don't think the music is much different from what Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak already record. .Paak was the opening act on the European leg of Mars' 2017 world tour. After working together first with Nile Rodgers on the Chic album It's About Time and then music that appeared on .Paak's album Ventura, they decided to form a duo. The name Silk Sonic was given to them by funk legend Bootsy Collins. He appears on the album as a narrator. Mars announced in early 2021 they had recorded an album. It was released on Dr. Dre's Aftermath label with Atlantic distribution. The single Leave the Door Open was released Mar. 5, 2021 and Silk Sonic performed it on the Grammy Awards broadcast. The single topped the Billboard Hot 100. The song has a Philly Soul vibe. It sounds like Thom Bell could have produced it for The Stylistics. Mars and .Paak wrote and produced the album with Dernst "D'Mile" Emile II. He had success producing H.E.R. Brody Brown gets a songwriting credit on Leave the Door Open. He works frequently with Mars. For some reason, the album wasn't released until Nov. 2021. By that time I think most listeners downloaded the songs they liked and didn't bother buying the album. It was still certified Gold but it should have been bigger. Instead of touring, Silk Sonic did a residency at the Park MGM in Las Vegas. They also won five Grammys. It remains to be seen if Silk Sonic is a one shot deal. Both guys have successful solo careers and this album took a long time to produce. Time will tell. Here's the video for Leave the Door Open by Silk Sonic.

Big Bad Blog Video Theater-Becky Lynch vs Asuka

Here's the match video of Becky Lynch vs Asuka from last night's episode of RAW. This No Holds Barred match was a blowoff to end this feud. I knew Becky would win as she should. Asuka brought a garbage can to the ring as a callback to her 2017 classic Last Woman Standing match vs Nikki Cross. This match is nowhere near as good as that match. Becky has trouble jamming a chair in the corner which causes their timing to be off. Mostly they use chairs which was ho hum. So that's what the match was like. Asuka used the garbage can the same way she used it with Nikki. And she brought in an umbrella which led to the green mist backfiring and Asuka going through a table for the finish. I guess they wanted to keep the match basic. They worked hard but it wasn't memorable. Enjoy the video!

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-The Doobie Brothers

Artist:The Doobie Brothers

Song:What a Fool Believes

Album:Greatest Hits

The Doobie Brothers were very popular in the early 70s. When original lead singer Tom Johnston had health problems, it looked like they might be through. But his replacement Michael McDonald revitalized them and the 1979 single What a Fool Believes topped the charts. It's their biggest hit. The change began when former Steely Dan guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter joined The Doobie Brothers. While the single Black Water topped the charts, Tom Johnston was having health problems that forced him to miss some shows. After Johnston was hospitalized with a bleeding ulcer, Baxter suggested that Michael McDonald, another former Steely Dan member, could replace Johnston temporarily. After the tour, the band needed to do something more permanent for their next album. So they asked McDonald to bring some demos and they might use some of his songs. Warner Bros. was jittery about McDonald. But when McDonald's Takin' It To the Streets was a hit, they were happy. McDonald wrote and sang four songs on the album. Johnston left The Doobie Brothers after the 1977 album Livin' on the Fault Line and released a 1979 solo album. With the 1979 album Minute by Minute, McDonald became the main lead singer. So The Doobies became a blue eyed soul band. What a Fool Believes was the first single. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 and is The Doobie Brothers' biggest hit. The album was certified 3XPlatinum. McDonald wrote What a Fool Believes with Kenny Loggins and Loggins recorded it on his 1978 album Nightwatch. It was not released as a single. Bill Payne of Little Feat played the synthesizers. So it was a great success. But McDonald wasn't getting along with Baxter. Baxter left and so did drummer John Hartman. He was replaced by session drummer Chet McCracken and Baxter was replaced by John McFee of Clover. When the 1980 album One Step Closer was unsuccessful, that led to the end of The Doobie Brothers in 1981. Patrick Simmons clashed with McDonald over McDonald's activities outside The Doobie Brothers. McDonald left and launched a successful solo career. This 2001 comp is considered to be the best Doobie Brothers comp. They reformed in 1987 and a version of the band with Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons, Michael McDonald and John McFee still records and tours. Here's the video for What a Fool Believes by The Doobie Brothers.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Katy Nichole

Artist:Katy Nichole

Song:In Jesus' Name (God of Possible)

EP:Katy Nichole

Here's a song that began as a viral sensation and has topped Billboard's Christian Airplay chart. This happened so quickly that Katy Nichole doesn't even have a Wikipedia page yet. Nor does she have an album. This EP was released in May. Katy is 21 years old from Phoenix. She began singing as a teen and eventually became a worship leader at The Grove. Josh Havens is the pastor there. He is lead singer of The Afters and Katy credits him with developing her musical talent. Katy suffered from scoliosis. And after surgery didn't seem to help, Katy claimed to have undergone a supernatural healing. Then she joined a volunteer group singing at a children's hospital. After performing the chorus of In Jesus Name on TikTok, it spread so quickly that the CCM label Centricity signed her and sent her to the recording studio to record the single. The producer was Jeff Pardo who has produced other CCM acts like Riley Clemmons. When in Jesus' Name zoomed up the CCM charts, Centricity had Katy record an EP which includes a duet with Big Daddy Weave lead singer Mike Weaver. This has all happened in the last couple of months. Though I don't think the song is anything special, it's typical CCM, I thought the story of how it spread was interesting. And that Centricity acted quickly in getting the music to the marketplace and they even have Katy touring. Here's the video of In Jesus' Name (God of Possible) by Katy Nichole.

Big Bad Blog Video Theater-2022 Women's Money In The Bank match

Here's the match video of the 2022 Women's Money In The Bank match from last night's WWE show in Las Vegas. We all know what the rules are. The participants are Liv Morgan, Becky Lynch, Lacey Evans, Asuka, Alexa Bliss, Raquel Rodriguez and Shotzi. The main characteristic of a ladder match is the bumps. I think MITB is like a lot of WWE concepts. It's played out and maybe it's time to retire it and think of something else. The match was OK. The funniest thing was every time Lacey did anything, the crowd booed her. Alexa Bliss did a Molly Go Round which was funny as Molly Holly was one of the match producers. Shotzi took a really stupid bump that looked like she killed herself. Of course Becky was the favorite to win except with her current character, I didn't think so. The end came with Raquel and Asuka brawling on the floor. Raquel set up a ladder bridge and isn't able to put Asuka through it. then Becky sets up a ladder and jumps on Asuka and the ladder. She almost missed. Asuka really sold this move but she's fine. Then they did a call back to last year with multiple ladders in the ring. Becky seems to eliminate the others by tipping two of the ladders. But she forgot about Liv who won the match. Later on, Ronda Rousey successfully defended her Smackdown Women's Championship over Natalya. But she seemed to injure her knee. So Liv cashed in the MITB briefcase and won the title. I didn't think Ronda was incapacitated enough but they did it anyway. It pleased the crowd. I just didn't think it was executed very well. Enjoy the video!

Big Bad Blog Video Theater-Julija Stoliarenko vs Jessica-Rose Clark

Here's the match video of Julija Stoliarenko vs Jessica-Rose "Jessy-Jess" Clark from last night's UFC show in Las Vegas. This fight is at Bantamweight. Jessy-Jess is an Aussie who trains with Kieran Fitzgibbon at Combat Sports Academy in Dublin, CA. She's had a lot of injuries and it was clear from her last fight that she has really slowed down. Julija is from Lithuania. She didn't make the UFC after appearing in TUF 26. But a big win in Invicta got her into the UFC. After going 0-3 in the UFC, she needs a win. To win this fight, Jessy-Jess needs to keep it standing. And she knocks Julija down with a right hand. But Julija recovers and takes Jessy-Jess down and immediately finishes her with an armbar. This is the one thing Jessy-Jess needed to avoid as it is the only thing Julija is any good at. That got Julija a $50,000 bonus and probably saved her job. It may be over for Jessy-Jess. Enjoy the video!

Big Bad Blog Video Theater-Maycee Barber vs Jessica Eye

Here's the match video of Maycee Barber vs Jessica Eye from last night's UFC show in Las Vegas. This fight is at Flyweight. Maycee is 25 years old from Fort Collins, CO. She trains at Team Alpha Male in Sacramento with Danny Castillo. A win here would get her into the rankings. Jessica is 35 years old. She moved back to Cleveland to train with her original gym Strong Style. She must have been watching recently as I guess she thought looking busy could fool the judges. So she pushed Maycee into the fence. The difference is Maycee didn't just accept the position. She hammered Jessica with strikes and won round one 10-9. Maycee continued to do that in round two until Jessica got a takedown. The problem was she didn't advance her position. I thought Maycee did enough in the first half of the round to win 10-9. Two of the judges scored it 10-9 for Jessica. Maycee needed to make statement in round three and though she didn't get a finish, she certainly won the round 10-9. So I scored it 30-27 for Maycee. Two judges scored it 29-28 for Maycee and the third scored it 30-27. That should get Maycee ranked. Afterwards, Jessica retired and said she wants to get into pro wrestling. Good luck with that. Enjoy the video!

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-John Scofield & Pat Metheny

Artist:John Scofield & Pat Metheny

Song:The Red One

Album:I Can See Your House From Here

This 1994 album is the only time that jazz guitar greats John Scofield and Pat Metheny have recorded together. The album topped the jazz charts at the time. Scofield and Metheny first met in 1970 when both were attending Berklee in Boston. Both were 19 years old. As they built their careers, the two always wanted to record together. But touring schedules being what they are, it's always tough to find the time. At the time, Scofield recorded for Blue Note and Metheny recorded for Geffen. Scofield was recording mostly with a quartet featuring sax player Joe Lovano. Metheny had just won a Grammy for the 1992 album Secret Story. Scofield had just finished recording the album Hand Jive with tenor sax legend Eddie Harris. The producer of that album, Lee Townsend, thought he could make an album with Metheny happen. Townsend works a lot with another guitarist Bill Frisell. And so it did. Both guys wrote new songs for the album. The other musicians were Steve Swallow on bass and Bill Stewart on drums. Stewart was Scofield's regular drummer at the time. They toured to support it. After one more album, Scofield left Blue Note for Verve. As far as I can tell, this album is the only time Scofield and Metheny have recorded together. It's a must for fans of both guys. Just remember that Scofield is on the left channel and Metheny is on the right channel. Here's John Scofield & Pat Metheny performing The Red One on Jazz Open in Stuttgart, Germany June 29,1994.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Cardi B

Artist:Cardi B f/Bad Bunny & J Balvin

Song:I Like It

Album:Invasion of Privacy

Cardi B is one of today's most popular rappers. Her 2018 debut album Invasion of Privacy was certified 3XPlatinum. I Like It was one of two chart topping singles from the album. Her success continues though her second album is overdue. Her success is amazing for a female Latina. She was born Belcalis Almanzar Oct. 11, 1992 in New York City. Her father is Dominican and her mother is Trinidadian. Her original nickname was Bacardi and she changed it to Cardi B so she could copyright it. She attended Renaissance High School for Musical Theater & Technology. When she was fired from a part time job, she went to the strip club across the street. I am sure she is criticized for that now. But she says it was the only way for her to make money at the time. When Cardi B's Vine and Instagram videos got her attention, she joined the cast of the VH1 reality series Love & Hip Hop: New York. She left after two seasons but her exposure on the show was enough to get her endorsements. She joined the cast of the BET series Being Mary Jane. After a couple of mixtapes, Cardi B signed with Atlantic Records. She was nominated for a Best New Artist BET Award. Invasion of Privacy was released June 2017 and the first single Bodak Yellow topped the Billboard Hot 100. Cardi B was the first female rapper to top the charts since Lauryn Hill in 1998. I Like It was the fourth single from the album and it also topped the charts. So obviously the album was very successful. Cardi wrote all her raps but she worked with several producers. Jermaine "J. White Did It" White produced both singles. He had worked on Cardi B's mixtapes. On I Like It, Atlantic Records CEO Craig Kallman wanted Cardi to pay tribute to her Latin heritage. It's based on the popular 1967 boogaloo classic I Like It Like That by Pete Rodriguez. I recognized it immediately. It features Bad Bunny and J Balvin.
