Artist:Matt Wilson's Arts & Crafts
Song:Free Range Chicken
Album:Wake Up! (To What's Happening)
Drummer Matt Wilson is a very successful sideman on the New York jazz scene. He has also recorded as a leader since 1996. Arts & Crafts was formed with the excellent trumpeter Terrel Stafford. They released three albums. Wilson was born Sept. 27, 1964 in Knoxville, IL. He started playing drums in elementary school. After attending Wichita State University, Wilson moved to Boston. After playing with saxman Charlie Kohlhase and Either/Orchestra, Wilson moved to New York and became an in demand sideman with Joshua Redman, Lee Konitz, Fred Hersch and others. He signed with Palmetto Records and released his first album as a leader in 1996. It was called As Wave Follows Wave. The song Free Range Chicken first appeared on that album with Dewey Redman (Joshua's dad) on sax, Larry Goldings on piano and Cecil McBee on bass. That album is available as a budget CD. Goldings has worked a lot with Wilson and was a member of Arts & Crafts when the first album was released in 2001. Free Range Chicken is from the 2004 album Wake Up! (To What's Happening) with Stafford, Goldings, Dennis Irwin on bass and guest vocalist Curtis Stigers. Wilson's most recent album with Arts & Crafts was in 2012. Sadly, Wilson's wife Felicia died in 2014 of leukemia. She was a violinist and teacher. After releasing the 2016 album Beginning of a Memory as a tribute to her, Wilson got busy again. His latest album Hug! was released in 2020 with Kirk Knuffke on cornet, Jeff Lederer on sax and Chris Lightcap on bass. As a sideman, Wilson has recently recorded with Lederer, Freddie Redd and Martin Wind. Here's Matt Wilson with Terrel Stafford on trumpet, Gary Versace on accordion and Martin Wind on bass performing Free Range Chicken at KMHD Jazz Radio studio in Oregon Public Broadcasting during the 2013 Portland Jazz Festival.
