Artist:David Bowie f/Mick Jagger
Song:Dancing in the Street
Album:Nothing Has Changed
This 1985 one off single was recorded to benefit Live Aid. It never appeared on a David Bowie or Mick Jagger album. So it is a discography orphan. But it does appear on several Bowie comps. As I said, this single came out of the Live Aid concert. The original plan was for Bowie and Jagger to perform Dancing in the Street live in different locations. Bowie would be at Wembley Stadium in London and Jagger at John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia. Unfortunately the technology was not available at the time. The satellite link was going to cause a half second delay. I'm sure it could be done now. Once it was determined that this couldn't be done live, Jagger went to London where Bowie was recording the soundtrack for the film Absolute Beginners. The record was recorded in one day and they shot the video too. Jagger was looking for an iconic moment like he had when he performed It's Only Rock and Roll with Tina Turner. Not being able to record it live took that away. The whole thing should have been dropped. But they recorded it anyway. But it sounded so bad that producer Alan Winstanley brought in recording engineer Bob Clearmountain to do a remix. That's the version that was released as a single. It reached #7 on the Billboard Hot 100. The best way to get this single is on this 3CD David Bowie box set which covers his entire career. Here's the video for Dancing in the Street by David Bowie featuring Mick Jagger.
