Artist:Roberto Occhipinti

Song Marta

Album:A Bend in the River

Canadian jazz bassist Roberto Occhipinti started out as a classical musician. So he is equally comfortable in an orchestra or a small band. He's a two time Juno nominee. He was born Mar. 25, 1955 in Toronto. His brother Michael Occhipinti is a jazz guitarist and co-founder of the Neufeld-Occhipinti Jazz Orchestra. Occhipinti studied music at the University of Toronto with classical bassist Joel Quarrington and jazz bassist Dave Young. After graduating, he played with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra, Esprit Orchestra and Arraymusic. In the 90s he started working with Toronto based jazz musicians like Hilario Duran and Jane Bunnett. Since then he has worked with jazz and classical musicians and worked as a session musician. Occhipinti started his own label Modica Music in 2003. Marta is from the 2009 album A Bend in the River for the Canadian label Alma Records. The musicians are Luiz Deniz on alto sax, Cuban pianist David Virelles and Cuban drummer Dafnis Prieto. Occhipinti wrote most of the songs but Deniz wrote Marta. This album was nominated for a Juno and is available on CD. Occhipinti's latest album The Next Step was released in 2021. He plays regular shows in Toronto clubs including as a part of Deniz's band. Here's Roberto Occhipinti with Luis Deniz on alto sax, Uli Geissendoerfer on piano and Jeremy Klewicki on drums with The Young Artists Orchestra of Las Vegas conducted by Yuniro Lopez performing Marta 2017.
