Uilleann Piper John McSherry is a founding member of the Irish band Lunasa. The band was formed in 1997 but McSherry got so busy with other projects that he left Lunasa and has led his own band ever since. He was born in 1970 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He started playing the Uilleann Pipes as a child. And by age 14 he had won two All Ireland piping championships. And he was the youngest ever winner of the 1988 Oireachtas Piping Championships. After that he started turning up in all kinds of bands including the family folk rock band Tamalin, Donal Lunny's band Coolfin, At First Light, Uliad and of course Lunasa. McSherry and fellow piper Michael McGoldrick left Lunasa because they didn't want to tour and would rather play sessions. The Slide from Grace is from McSherry's 2010 solo debut album Soma on Compass Records. McSherry produced the album and wrote most of the songs including The Slide from Grace. Musicians include Donal O'Connor on fiddle and keyboards and Ruben Bada on bouzouki. O'Connor regularly plays with McSherry. This album is available on CD. McSherry won awards for this album in Ireland. And maybe you heard him playing on the 1998 film Waking Ned Devine. McSherry leads the band The Olilam with Tyler Duncan. They self released a 2022 album and toured. Fans of Irish music should check him out. Here's John McSherry with Niall Murphy on fiddle, Donal O'Connor on piano, John Joe Kelly on bodhran, Paul Meehan on guitar and Alan Docherty on whistle performing The Slide from Grace.
