AccuRadio Song Of The Day-The Herbaliser

Artist:The Herbaliser

Song:The Real Killer

Album:Abstrakt Workshop

The Herbaliser is a British jazz influenced hip hop duo who have released music since the mid 90s. The Real Killer was their first single. They were successful mostly in London clubs. Jake Wherry was a bassist in the Acid Jazz group The Propheteers. He met DJ Ollie Teeba and they started working together. They signed with Ninja Tune and The Real Killer was The Herbaliser's first single in 1995. The jazz influence is obvious. And unlike other similar groups, The Herbaliser uses live musicians including Wherry on bass, Patrick Dawes of Groove Armada on percussion, Kaidi Tatham on piano and Funky Ray on trumpet. The sampled dialogue is from the 1935 film The Petrified Forest. Yes, that is Humphrey Bogart. So this is where things get confusing. The Real Killer was only released on an EP. It is not on The Herbaliser's 1995 debut album Remedies. On that album there is a track called Real Killer Part 2. This is a reworked version of The Real Killer. At one point The Real Killer was added to a reissue of Remedies. But that does not seem to be available. But you can get The Real Killer on this Shadow Records Acid Jazz sampler available at a budget price. Later The Herbaliser would become a band for touring. And they did the soundtrack to Guy Ritchie's Snatch and a couple of video game soundtracks. And they have other projects. Their latest album was released in 2018. I'm sure we will hear from The Herbaliser again. Here's a video for The Real Killer by The Herbaliser.
