AccuRadio Song Of The Day-L7

Artist:L7

Song:Pretend We're Dead

Album:Bricks Are Heavy

The all female band L7 had success in the early 90s grunge era. The 1992 single Pretend We're Dead was their biggest hit. L7 were formed in 1985 in Los Angeles by Donita Sparks and Suzi Gardner. Both sing and write songs. They added Jennifer Finch on bass and Anne Anderson on drums. Their first demo was produced by Brett Gurewitz of Bad Religion and released on his Epitaph label. Anne Anderson was replaced by Demetra "Dee" Plakas and that has been the lineup for most of their run. After releasing a single on Sub Pop, they suggested L7 move to Seattle and record an album there. The 1990 album Smell the Magic was positively reviewed at Rolling Stone and L7 opened for Nirvana. L7 formed the women's rights group Rock for Choice with Sue Cummings of LA Weekly. This group did several all star benefit concerts. Meanwhile L7 signed with Warner's Slash label and released the 1993 album Bricks Are Heavy produced by Butch Vig of Garbage. The single Pretend We're Dead reached #8 on the Alternative Rock chart. That's turned out to be their biggest hit. Donitra wrote most of the songs on the album including Pretend We're Dead which is a post breakup song. L7 recorded three albums for Slash. But they were fading by the late 90s. They went on hiatus in 1999. Donitra formed Donitra Sparks and the Stellar Moments. They recorded a 2007 album before splitting up. L7 reformed in 2014 mostly to tour. But they self released an album in 2019 through PledgeMusic and it looks like they will continue. Here's the video for Pretend We're Dead by L7.
