AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Melvins

 Artist:Melvins

Song:Honey Bucket

Album:Houdini

Melvins is a metal band best known as Nirvana leader Kurt Cobain's favorite band. So they were a big influence on the Seattle grunge scene. And Cobain's fame got them a record deal at Atlantic for the 1993 album Houdini. Honey Bucket is their best known song though Melvins has never been commercially successful. Melvins were formed in 1983 in Montesano, WA. Buzz Osborne was lead singer and guitarist. Matt Lukin was on bass and Mike Dillard was on drums. They went to high school together. Dale Crover soon replaced Dillard. Osborne and Crover have been in Melvins since then. The band name is after Osborne's boss when he worked at a Thriftway store. I would describe their music as slowcore metal. The connection to Cobain was Crover played on his demos. Then Osborne introduced Cobain to Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl. That led to the formation of Nirvana. Osborne and Crover moved to San Francisco. The new bassist was Lori "Lorax" Black. She was Shirley Temple's daughter. After releasing a few albums, Melvins signed with Atlantic for the 1993 album Houdini. This was after Nirvana's Nevermind album was a big success. Atlantic wanted Cobain to produce the album and he is credited. But he was so spaced out on drugs that Osborne says they were forced to fire him. Osborne had no illusions about being on a major label. So they tried to make a commercial record that wouldn't alienate their fans. Meanwhile Black was having drug problems so she was replaced. Melvins recorded three albums for Atlantic that did not sell. They returned to recording for small labels. They are still around. Melvins released an album in Feb. 2021. Here's the video for Honey Bucket by Melvins. There sure are a lot of farm animals in this video.
