AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Tia Fuller

Artist:Tia Fuller f/Dianne Reeves

Song:Body and Soul

Album:Angelic Warrior

Sax player Tia Fuller has recorded a few albums as a leader. But for the most part, she is an in demand sideman. Currently she is in Beyonce's all female backup band which is certainly the most high profile gig in her career. She was born Mar. 27, 1976 in Aurora, CO. Her parents are teachers and jazz musicians. Fred Fuller plays bass and her mother Ethiopia sings. Her sister is jazz pianist Shamie Royston. They work together frequently. Shamie is married to drummer Rudy Royston. Tia began playing sax in high school. She attended Spelman College in Atlanta and she was in Ray Charles' band. She continued her education at the University of Colorado and earned a master's degree in jazz pedagogy. Tia moved to Jersey City and played New York City clubs. She recorded with Sean Jones and Nancy Wilson. Tia first worked with Beyonce in 2006 and she continues to work with her. She also toured with Esperanza Spalding's band Radio Music Society. I saw them at Massey Hall in Toronto in 2012. Tia made her recording debut as a leader in 2005. She currently records for Mack Avenue. Body and Soul is from her 2012 album Angelic Warrior. It features Dianne Reeves on vocals. Musicians are Shamie Royston on piano, Mimi Jones on bass and Rudy Royston on drums. John Patitucci and Terri Lyne Carrington make guest appearances. Her latest album Diamond Cut was released in 2018. Tia teaches at Berklee in Boston and conducts clinics at jazz camps across the US. Here's Tia Fuller featuring Dianne Reeves with Terri Lyne Carrington on drums, Tineke Postma on sax, Nir Felder on guitar, Helen Sung on piano and Josh Hari on bass performing Body and Soul at the 2012 Jazz San Javier in Spain. This video is not on Youtube. I got it from Dianne Reeves' Facebook page. Yes, I do have a Facebook account but only to snag videos for the blog. Otherwise I don't go to Facebook.
