AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Mickey & The Soul Generation

Artist:Mickey & The Soul Generation
Song:Give Everybody Some
Album:Texas Funk 1968-1975

Those who like vintage funk should enjoy Mickey & The Soul Generation. They were an obscure group and guys like DJ Shadow sample groups like this and release comp CDs like Texas Funk. It's amazing how much of this stuff is out there. Mickey & The Soul Generation were from San Antonio, TX. Keyboard player Mickey Foster and sax player Emil Carter were in the Latino soul group The Royal Tokens. They decided to form their own band with guitarist George Salas and bassist Gilbert Rivera. After adding sax player Johnny Hooks, they called themselves The Fabulous Five and then Mickey & The Soul Generation. The 1969 single Iron Leg did well enough to get them national distribution from Maxwell Records. And though they had success regionally with songs like Football and Give Everyone Some, they ultimately split with Maxwell over money in 1973. They toured nationally with another Maxwell act Faith, Hope & Charity and they toured the south with bigger name acts. The revival came when popular DJ Josh "DJ Shadow" Davis claimed they were his favorite funk band. He wrote the liner notes for a 2CD comp that is no longer in print. Give Everybody Some appears on this various artists comp from the British label Jazzman. They release a lot of these kind of funk comps. So I would recommend Mickey & The Soul Generation to vintage funk fans. Here's a video for Give Everybody Some by Mickey & The Soul Generation.
