Song:Veritas
Album:Veritas
Fans of the thrash metal band Testament are probably familiar with guitarist Alex Skolnick. What they may not know is he switched to jazz and has led a jazz trio. That's very unusual. He was born Sept. 29, 1968 in Berkeley, CA. His parents were sociology professors. Skolnick took up guitar at age 9 influenced by Eddie Van Halen, Jeff Beck etc. He studied with Joe Satriani. He joined Testament in 1983 and they had a pretty good run. Skolnick left in 1993. He joined Savatage after guitarist Criss Oliva died. He also played with Ozzy Osbourne. In 1998, Skolnick decided to become a jazz musician. He studied at The New School in New York. Though he has occasionally returned to Testament and done a few other metal projects, he started recording with his own trio in 2001. The current members are Nathan Peck on bass and Matt Zebroski on drums. At first they recorded classic rock covers. But most of the songs on the 2011 album Veritas are original compositions. This is his most recent jazz album. Skolnick returned to Testament in 2005 and he has been recording and touring with them. For a while he was splitting his time between Testament and his trio. But right now he is concentrating on Testament. Here's the Alex Skolnick Trio performing Veritas 2011.
