Song:I Want My Baby For Christmas
Album:Jimmy Liggins
Jimmy Liggins was the younger brother of the well known R & B singer Joe Liggins. Jimmy had modest success on the R & B charts in the early 50s. By the late 50s, he quit recording and started his own management company. He was born Oct. 14, 1918 in Newby, OK and he grew up on San Diego. As a teen, Jimmy was a pro boxer as Kid Zulu. He quit boxing to work for brother Joe Liggins who toured with his band The Honeydrippers. Then Jimmy decided to start his own band The Drops Of Joy and he signed with Specialty Records in 1947. Jimmy had some success on the R & B charts with Cadillac Boogie. But it wasn't quite enough for Specialty owner Art Rupe to push Jimmy nationally. The seasonal song I Want My Baby For Christmas was released in 1950 and it reached #2 on the R & B singles chart. The sax solo is by Maxwell Davis who worked a lot with Jimmy. By 1954, Jimmy knew he was going nowhere at Specialty. and he left for Aladdin. His biggest hit I Ain't Drunk was on Aladdin. You can get all of his Specialty recordings on this CD. By the late 50s, Jimmy Liggins' style of music wasn't popular anymore and he started his own label Duplex Records in 1958. He never recorded again. Jimmy Liggins died on July 18, 1983 at age 64. Here's a video for I Want My Baby For Christmas by Jimmy Liggins.
