Song:Who Stole My Radio?
Album:Deluxe Edition
Shemekia Copeland has been a fixture on the blues charts since she was a teen. Most of this success was on Bruce Iglauer's Alligator Records. She left Alligator for a couple of years and is now returning and she will release a new CD next month. She was born Apr. 10, 1979 in Harlem, NY the daughter of blues legend Johnny Copeland. And that's why Shemekia is classified as a blues artist though I think he singing style is more soul than blues. Her dad took her on the road when she was a child. Sadly Copeland died in 1997 just as Shemekia signed with Alligator Records and she released her debut CD Turn The Heat Up in 1998. All her CDs have done very well on the Blues Album chart. Who Stole My Radio? is from Shemekia's 2005 CD The Soul Truth which was produced by Stax legend Steve Cropper. Then Shemekia took a four year break and returned with the 2009 album Never Going Back on Telarc Records which by this time was owned by Concord Records. She recorded two CDs for Telarc. Alligator released this Deluxe Edition comp in 2011. Shemekia has returned to Alligator and the CD Outskirts Of Love will be released next month. Like a lot of blues artists, Shemekia tours the festival circuit during the summer. She will also tour this fall to support her new album. She is very entertaining so be sure to check her out. Here's Shemekia Copeland performing Who Stole My Radio? at the 2010 W.C. Handy Blues and Barbecue Festival in Henderson, KY for the PBS series Jubilee.
