Artist:Iron & Wine
Song:Naked As We Came
Album:Our Endless Numbered Days
Iron & Wine is the stage name for folksinger Samuel Beam. He started out recording at home and now records with big name musicians for Warner Bros. Even if you don't know who he is, you've probably heard his music on TV shows. That's how music is sold these days. Beam was born July 26, 1974 in Chapin, SC. He earned a bachelor's degree in art at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA and then taught film at the University of Miami. He started writing songs and recorded some demos. This led to a deal with Sub Pop Records. Beam called himself Iron & Wine after a dietary supplement. We see a lot of singer songwriters using pseudonyms to retain anonymity. Beam recorded his 2002 debut CD The Creek Drank The Cradle at home. Iron & Wine was favourably compared to guys like Nick Drake, Elliot Smith and John Fahey. For his 2004 CD Our Endless Numbered Days, Sub pop sent Beam to Chicago to work with producer Brian Deck to get a more polished sound. Three Iron & Wine songs including Naked As We Came were used in the 2004 film In Good Company. Naked As We Came also appeared in the TV series L Word, Grey's Anatomy, Numb3rs and Ugly Betty. The end result was that Beam's 2007 CD The Shepherd's Dog reached #24 on the Billboard Hot 200. Then Beam signed with Warner Bros. and his 2011 CD Kiss Each Other Clean reached #6 on the Billboard Hot 200. Iron & Wine's new CD Ghost On Ghost will be released tomorrow and it should have similar success. Beam will begin a US tour in May. Iron & Wine shows that exposing music through TV is a very successful marketing strategy. Here's the video for Naked As We Came by Iron & Wine.
