If you're a gospel music fan and you especially like gospel choirs, you're going to want to check out this 2016 album that flew underneath the radar because it's poorly packaged. But as you will see, this album was produced by folks that most gospel fans will know. First of all, what is GEI? It's actually the Greater Emmanuel Institutional COGIC Mass Choir. This is a famous Detroit church pastored by Bishop J. Drew Sheard. Most gospel music fans should know that he is married to Karen Clark Sheard of The Clark Sisters and their daughter is Kierra Sheard. So this album is on their label Karew Records. The album was written and the choir arranged by Derrick Starks. He was born Nov. 27, 1970 in Detroit. His father was Rev. C,J. Starks of Prayer Tabernacle Church and that's where he learned to play organ. His music teacher was Dr. Mattie Moss Clark who is the mother of The Clark Sisters. So he's known them his whole life. In the 90s, he led the choir Derrick Starks & Today's Generation and they recorded a couple of albums for Crystal Rose Records. Since then he's a writer producer specializing in choirs. He's worked with all the big names in gospel music. On this album, Starks wrote the songs and directed the choir. J. Drew Sheard II arranged and produced. He is the son of the Sheards and is a drummer. Hang On was the first single featuring Kierra Sheard. The rapper isn't identified but I believe it's J. Drew Sheard II. Other guest singers are The Clark Sisters, Karen Clark Sheard and Dorinda Clark-Cole. This album is available on CD. Gospel fans should check it out.
