Artist:The Beatles
Song:Yellow Submarine
Album:1
I think most music fans remember Yellow Submarine as a 1968 animated feature film. But the song had a history. It wasn't written for the film. The song first appeared on the 1966 album Revolver. Of course most Beatles songs were written and sung by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and George Harrison wrote and sang as well. They usually saved one vocal for Ringo Starr. That's what Yellow Submarine was on Revolver. Lennon and McCartney wrote Yellow Submarine as a children's song and as Starr's vocal on the album. It was released on the B side of Eleanor Rigby and reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. King Features Syndicate producer Al Brodax approached McCartney about turning Yellow Submarine into an animated film. Brodax executive produced those early 60s Popeye cartoons and the Beatles animated TV series that aired on ABC in 1965. McCartney liked the idea because United Artists was bugging them about making a third feature film. And by making an animated film, The Beatles wouldn't have to appear in the film or write any new songs. They did provide voices and made a brief appearance at the end of the film. The film was directed by Canadian animator George Dunning. He started out at the National Film Board of Canada, worked on Gerald McBoing-Boing cartoons at UPA and produced the Beatles TV series. Most of the Yellow Submarine soundtrack album was the musical score composed by George Martin. Most of the songs including Yellow Submarine had been previously released. So for the casual listener, I do not recommend the Yellow Submarine soundtrack album. You can get Yellow submarine on this comp. Considering that the film was mostly a contractual obligation, Yellow Submarine turned out well. It made money and was critically acclaimed. Here's the video for Yellow Submarine by The Beatles.
Growing up I loved the Beatles. And I loved the song Yellow Submarine. Now that I am older I like some of their other songs like Michelle and others. And there is other types of music I like as well. Thanks so much for the memories Frank. David.
