Nuala Kennedy is an Irish flutist who has been in several bands but these days she usually leads her own band. She was born Jan. 30, 1977 in Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland where she played piano and flute in a local ceili band and studied classical piano at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. She moved to Scotland to study Design at the Edinburgh College of Art. She has a post graduate diploma in Education from the University of Edinburgh and a Master of Music from Newcastle University in England. She played regularly in the trio Fine Friday with Kris Drever and Anna-Wendy Stevenson and they released a couple of albums. She also recorded with the Scottish folk band Harem Scarem. Nuala signed with the roots music label Compass Records and the 2011 album Noble Stranger was the third of her three albums for Compass. Musicians include her singer husband AJ Roach, Mike Bryan on guitar, Iain MacLeod on mandolin and Donald Hay on drums. The record is a mix of traditional Irish music and contemporary sounds. At the time Nuala was touring a lot in the US but she and her family have returned to Ireland. Nuala released an album on her own label last year. But she seems to be concentrating on raising her family. Here's Nuala Kennedy performing Asturias at The Institute of Musical Traditions in Rockville, MD Feb. 17, 2014.
