AccuRadio Song Of The Day-The Killjoys

Artist:The Killjoys

Song:Soaked

Album:Gimme Five

There were two bands in the 90s known as The Killjoys. One was from Melbourne, Australia. This band was from Canada. Both had modest success but never broke through to a wide audience. The Canadian Killjoys were formed in 1992 in Hamilton. ON. The lead singer, guitarist and songwriter was Mike Trebilcock. Shelley Woods played bass and Gene Champagne played drums. I would describe them as power pop. So with grunge really popular in the early 90s, success for The Killjoys was always going to be an uphill climb. They released the 1994 album Starry on the British label Cargo Records. It did well enough that Warner Music Canada released it in Canada. They also released the 1996 album Gimme Five. Most of The Killjoys' success was from their music videos getting played on MuchMusic. Canadian broadcasters have Canadian content quotas so MuchMusic is obligated to play bands like The Killjoys. There is also a fund to produce music videos. As a result, Soaked reached #20 on the Canadian Singles chart. And I should point out that none of The Killjoys' three Warner albums were released in the US. There was nothing wrong with their music but it was out of step with the times. After The Killjoys released a 1999 album on Shoreline, they retired. The Killjoys briefly reunited in 2015 and now they are playing regular gigs. I don't know if they will record. Here's the video for Soaked by The Killjoys.
