Artist:Treacherous Orchestra
Song:Superfly: Sheepskins Beeswax/Taybank Shenanigans/Superfly
Album:Origins
A while back I featured a band called The Red Hot Chili Pipers that mixes takes Celtic music and gives it a rock backbeat. Treacherous Orchestra is similar but they haven't recorded as frequently. They describe themselves as a folk big band. They were formed in Glasgow in 2007 and played locally until Origins was released in 2012. These guys are all experienced musicians but Ali Hutton, Barry Reid and Duncan Lyall are credited as producers. Hutton plays guitar and bagpipes. He is a member of Old Blind Dogs. Reid plays electric guitar. He is a member of The MacCollective led by fiddler Lauren MacColl. Lyall is a session bassist. Other members are Kevin O'Neill and Bo Jingham on flute. Ross Ainslie on bagpipes, Adam Sutherland and Innes Watson on fiddle, John Somerville on accordion, Eamonn Coyne on banjo, Martin O'Neill on bodhran and Fraser Stone on drums. The music is mostly original songs. Superfly is a medley of three songs. Sheepskins Beeswax is traditional, Ainslie wrote Taybank Shenanigans, Kevin O'Neil wrote Superfly. The album was released on Proper's Navigator label. A second album Grind was released in 2015 on Reveal Records. It says on their website that they are returning in 2022. That probably means a new album and tour. Here's Treacherous Orchestra performing Superfly at the 2014 festival de Ortigueira in Spain.
