Album:Blue Screen Life
Pinback is an indie band that had modest success twenty years ago. And though they last released an album in 2012, Pinback is still around and will play live shows in 2026. Pinback was formed in 1998 in San Diego by Armistead Burwell Smith IV and Rob Crow. Both guys play multiple instruments and write and produce. They usually hire drummers for touring. The name Pinback is a character in the 1974 cult film Dark Star. Smith was in the band Three Mile Pilot. They signed with Geffen Records. Geffen convinced Smith to leave that band. He formed Pinback with his roommate Crow. Pinback signed with the indie label Ace Fu Records. Penelope is from their 2001 album Blue Screen Life. It was their second album on Ace Fu. As I said, they write all the songs and self produce. So touring is how indie bands sell records as most indie label don't do promotion. Blue Screen Life is available as a digital download. Pinback has released five albums and several EPs. They last released an album in 2012. Smith has recorded solo using the name Systems Officer. He released an album in 2025 on his own label. Crow has released several solo albums on the indie label Temporary Residence, most recently in 2021. He has also played in several short lived bands. Though they haven't recorded recently, Pinback still plays live shows. And they announced recently on their website that they will begin touring in a couple of weeks. They even teased a possible album. If you're a Pinback fan, don't hold your breath for a new album. Here's Pinback performing Penelope at Webster Hall in New York City 2023.
