Valerie Letourneau, Poliana Botelho |
Last night the UFC announced that Valerie Letourneau vs Poliana Botelho has been added to UFC 206 Dec. 10 at the Air Canada Center in Toronto. I expect this to air on the prelims on Fox Sports 1 in the US and TSN in Canada. This was first reported last week by Combate in Brazil but I wanted to know the weight class. The UFC has decided to do this at Strawweight though it should be at Flyweight. I thought we all agreed that we didn't want Valerie dropping to 115 anymore. Her last fight against Joanne Calderwood was at 125. And all of Poliana's fights have been at 125. Her record is 6-1 and she is the XFC Flyweight Champion. She trains at Nova Uniao. Valerie is a Montreal native but she now trains at American Top Team in Florida. So we have two fighters who would be better off fighting at 125. So why is this fight at 115? I know what you're thinking. Didn't Dana White recently say they won't start any new weight classes? I think a lot of you just read the headlines and don't read the full article. Because if you read the full article, he actually says there are no plans to start a 145lb division but starting a 125lb division is inevitable. Well if it's inevitable, stop forcing Valerie to drop to 115. Normally I wouldn't think that the UFC newcomer is the favourite. But Poliana is from a great camp and she has won some high profile fights in Brazil. This will be her first fight outside Brazil. And she has won most of her fights by TKO. We'll see how hard she can punch.
