Cortney Casey, Cristina Stanciu |
Yesterday the UFC announced several fights. And one of those fights will have Strawweights Cortney Casey and Cristina Stanciu both looking for their first UFC wins. This fight will be on UFC Fight Night 91 July 13 at the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, SD. This show will air on Fox Sports 1 in the US and TSN in Canada. But I expect this fight will air on UFC Fight Pass. Cortney is 0-2 in the UFC. Her first fight was a short notice loss to Joanne Calderwood in Scotland. Her second loss was a close decision to Ham Seo Hee in Korea. The interesting thing is that though Cortney is American and lives in Hawaii, this will be her first fight in the US since 2013. She fought most of her career for PXC in Guam and UFC fighter and Guam native Jon Tuck will be in her corner. She was supposed to fight for Invicta when she the UFC called her. In both of her UFC fights, she has had good moments. But she needs to be more consistent if she wants to win fights. Cristina is from Bucharest, Romania. This will be her first time fighting outside of Europe. She lost her UFC debut to Maryna Moroz. That fight was in Croatia. All her previous fights were at home in Romania. She is 22 years old. Her lack of experience was fairly obvious in her loss to Moroz. In the first round, she expended a lot of energy trying to apply a guillotine that went nowhere. She ran out of gas. These kind of mistakes should be eliminated before coming to the UFC. It makes me think she would be better off in Invicta prelims. Going from low level competition in Romania to the UFC is a big leap. Maybe Cristina isn't ready for it. We shall see.
