Artist:Ivan Lins
Song:Ai, Ai, Ai, Ai, Ai
Album:Cantando Historias
Though I'm sure the average listener has never heard of him, Ivan Lins has been a highly respected singer and songwriter since the 70s. He is the only Brazilian artist to win a Latin Grammy for Album of the Year. He was born June 16, 1945 in Rio de Janeiro. He spent part of his childhood in Boston while his father, a naval engineer, studied at MIT. Lins considered a career in volleyball before turning to music. Lins writes most of his songs with Vitor Martins. His first big hit as a songwriter was in 1970 when Elis Regina had a hit with Magdalena. He first recorded for EMI Brazil in 1979. In the 80s he recorded with guys like Dave Grusin for Verve and then he recorded for Reprise Records with producer Stewart Levine. Ai, Ai, Ai, Ai, Ai first appeared on the 1990 Reprise album Awa Yio. More recently, he has recorded in Cuba with Chucho Valdes and Irakere. Telarc Records produced an Ivan Lins tribute concert at Carnegie Hall that was released on CD. Cantando Historias was released in 2005 and won a Latin Grammy for Album of the Year. This CD is a good intro to his music. Though Lins is primarily renowned as a songwriter, he's a very good performer. He last recorded in 2009. Brazilian music fans should check him out. Here's Ivan Lins performing Ai, Ai, Ai, Ai, Ai from the Cantando Historias DVD.
