AccuRadio Song Of The Day-The Kings

Artist:The Kings
Song:This Beat Goes On/Switchin' To Glide
Album:The Kings Are Here And More

The two sided single This Beat Goes On/Switchin' To Glide was the one significant hit for the Canadian band The Kings in 1980. As one hit wonders go it's a pretty good slice of New Wave. The Kings were formed in Oakville, ON which is between Toronto and Hamilton. David Diamond was lead singer and bassist, Mister Zero played guitar, Sonny Keyes played keyboards and Max Styles played drums. Diamond and Zero wrote all the songs. At first they were called WhistleKing and it was shortened to The Kings. In 1980 they went into Toronto's Nimbus 9 studio to record and legendary producer Bob Ezrin heard them and decided to work with them. He also got them a record deal with Elektra Records. The Kings Are Here was the album and This Beat Goes On/Switchin' To Glide reached #43 on the Billboard Hot 100. They also toured internationally opening for Bob Seger, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton. Unfortunately their second album Amazon Beach flopped and Elektra soon dropped them. Max Styles left in 1982. This edition of The Kings Are Here comes with bonus tracks. Though The Kings have not been part of the mainstream music scene since their one big hit, the group continues to tour and occasionally record. They even released a documentary of their history on DVD. Diamond and Zero still lead the band. Here's the video for This Beat Goes On/Switchin' To Glide by The Kings.
