Singer songwriter pianist Chantal Kreviazuk had a lot of success in her native Canada but could never seem to break through to the US. Sony tried. They placed her music in films and TV but it just didn't happen. Before You was her biggest hit in Canada in 1999. She has also had success writing for others. She was born May 18, 1973 in Winnipeg and was a classical piano prodigy as a child. She began writing songs as a teen. She really got into it while recovering from a 1994 motorcycle accident and signed with Sony Canada in 1995. Her debut CD Under These Rocks And Stones was released in 1997 produced by Peter Asher and Matt Wallace. She had two top ten singles in Canada and the CD went 2XPlatinum. But she didn't get the same results in the US. Meanwhile she met Our Lady Peace lead singer Raine Maida in 1996. They married in 1999 and have three sons. They have also worked together on music. So Sony thought that having Chantal cover Leaving On A Jet Plane on the Armageddon soundtrack was a sure thing. It wasn't. She recorded her second CD Colour Moving And Still with veteran roots producer Jay Joyce. It again did very well in Canada. Before You reached #2 on the Canadian singles chart. She also won two Juno awards. But again it didn't sell in the US. Sony continued to try and place Chantal in films and TV shows but nothing ever came of it. She recorded two more albums for Sony produced by husband Raine Maida and then left. You can get her recordings on this budget comp. Chantal currently records for MapleMusic and her latest CD Plain Jane was released Oct. 2009. She has also become an in demand songwriter after writing several songs with Avril Lavigne on her 2004 CD Under My Skin. Chantal and her family live in Los Angeles.
