Welcome to Frank Pozen's Big Bad Blog. A lot of folks have been asking me to update them about my recovery. So I thought I would start a blog primarily to do that but also to talk about other topics of interest including the wrestling business and whatever else I can think of. I plan to update this on a regular basis so check back and leave a comment if you wish.

Big Bad Blog Video Theater-Livinha Souza vs Sarah Frota
Here's the match video of Livinha Souza vs Sarah Frota from last night's UFC show in Brazil. Both fighters are from Brazil. Livinha is a former Invicta Strawweight champ. She won her UFC debut. She is an elite fighter on the ground. Her striking is sub par. On the other hand, Sarah is a striker who is useless on the ground. She also missed weight by eight pounds and based on this fight, she should fight at Flyweight. Sarah was on the Brazilian Dana White Contender Series. Sarah is considerably larger than Livinha. This fight was closer than it should have been. And if Livinha doesn't improve her striking and her striking defense, she will have big problems with the better Strawweight fighters. And if Sarah was any good on the ground at all, she would have won this fight. She could take Livinha down but she was never able to advance her position and the ref kept having to stand them up. The judges gave Livinha a split decision. I scored it 29-28 for Livinha but round two was very close. It could have been scored either way. Alarm bells should go off in Livinha's camp. They really need to work on her striking. Enjoy the video!
AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Johnny Dunn
Artist:Johnny Dunn
Song:Buffalo Blues
Album:Cornet Blues
Johnny Dunn was the top cornetist in jazz before Louis Armstrong arrived in New York in 1924. He is known for creating the "wah wah" trumpet effect. Unfortunately he didn't update his playing style after Armstrong and Dunn moved to Europe and died prematurely. He was born Feb. 19, 1897 in Memphis. Dunn attended Fisk University in Nashville and he was playing Memphis clubs when W.C. Handy hired him in 1917. In his three years in that band, Dunn was featured on what became known as Bugle Call Rag. He then recorded and toured with Mamie Smith's vaudeville troupe. Then he started his own band Original Jazz Hounds. They recorded and backed up singer Edith Wilson. He also toured Europe with Will Vodery's Plantation Orchestra and the revue Dover To Dixie. Dunn's problem was once Armstrong arrived in New York, Dunn's style was instantly passe and he never adjusted for the times. Dunn's final recordings in 1928 were for Columbia and then Vocalion. Buffalo Blues was for Columbia. Jelly Roll Morton wrote the song and also plays piano. Other musicians are Gavin Bushell on clarinet, Herb Fleming on trombone, Harry Hull on tuba, John Mitchell on banjo and Mort Perry on drums. Dunn recorded four songs with Morton and then he recorded two songs for Vocalion featuring Fats Waller and James P. Johnson. And then Dunn moved to Europe and he died from tuberculosis on Aug. 20, 1937 at age 40 in Paris. All of Dunn's recordings as a leader are on this CD from the British label Frog. Here's a video for Buffalo Blues by Johnny Dunn.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Sweet Sensation
Artist:Sweet Sensation
Song:If Wishes Came True
Album:Teen Riot
If Wishes Came True topped the charts in 1990. It was the biggest hit for Freestyle girl group Sweet Sensation. They were similar to Expose but they didn't last as long. They were formed in 1985 in The Bronx, NY as Sweet Temptation. Motown threatened to sue so the group name was changed to Sweet Sensation. Betty Lebron was the lead singer backed up by Margie and Mari Fernandez. From what I could tell, Betty did all the singing. The other two just danced. Betty met with producer David Sanchez at a recording studio. The rap group The Boogie Boys were recording that day. Boogie Boys member Joe "Romeo JD" Malloy heard Betty sing and decided to work with her. He wrote and produced a demo and he brought it to producer and DJ Ted Currier. Though Betty was a solo act, they decided to leave it as a group. Sweet Sensation released a couple of singles on Next Plateau. They did well enough that Atco Records signed them for the 1987 album Take It While It's Hot. Most of the album was written and produced by Malloy. It did OK. The single Never Let You Go topped the dance charts. Mari Fernandez was replaced by Sheila Vega. For the 1990 album Love Child, Currier brought in Steve Peck to produce. Peck was mainly a remix guy but he worked with Tony Terry and Terry was brought in to help with the vocal arrangements. The first single was a cover of The Supremes' Love Child. It reached #13 on the Billboard Hot 100. Then If Wishes Came True topped the charts. The song was written by Russ DeSalvo, Deena Charles and Robert Steele. DeSalvo plays the guitar solo. Love Child is available on CD but expensive. You can get If Wishes Were True on this Razor & Tie various artists CD. Beware as some various artists comps have an edited version of the song. This CD has the complete version. There was a remix album released in 1991. And then Margie and Sheila left. Betty brought in three new girls and she still leads a version of Sweet Sensation today. Here's the video of If Wishes Came True by Sweet Sensation.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Tom Waits
Artist:Tom Waits
Song:Ol' 55
Album:Closing Time
Singer songwriter Tom Waits has been around since the 70s. He's been very successful for a non-commercial recording artist. Ol' 55 was the first single from his 1973 debut album Closing Time. It's one of his signature songs. He was born Dec. 7, 1949 in Pomona, CA. He says an uncle inspired his raspy singing voice. His parents separated in 1959 and his mother moved the family to the San Diego area. Waits was in an R&B band in high school. But his big influences were Bob Dylan and Beat poets like Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsburg. After working as a fireman and in the Coast Guard, he started performing in local clubs. And he started writing songs. After playing The Troubadour in Los Angeles, he signed a publishing deal with Frank Zappa's manager Herb Cohen. Then he met David Geffen at The Troubadour who signed him to Asylum Records. His 1973 debut album Closing Time was produced by former Lovin' Spoonful member Jerry Yester. Though the album was not a big seller, Waits became a cult figure through critical acclaim. Waits was favorably compared to Randy Newman. He became more popular because of artists covering his songs. The Eagles covered Ol' 55. Waits recorded for Asylum until 1980. And then he recorded for Island in the 80s. After leaving Island in 1993, Waits worked in films for a few years. He did some acting in the 80s and that got him into soundtrack work. He signed with ANTI in 1999. He last recorded in 2011 but he has been releasing his back catalog on ANTI. There are no comp CDs in print right now. Waits recently appeared in the Netflix film The Ballad of Buster Scruggs from the Coen Brothers. He has been filming Jim Jarmusch's new film The Dead Don't Die. He has been in several Jarmusch films. I'm sure at some point Waits will return to music. Here's Tom Waits performing Ol' 55 in 1999.

Big Bad Blog Video Theater-Kairi Sane and Io Shirai vs Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir
Here's the match video of Kairi Sane and Io Shirai vs Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir from this week's episode of NXT. This was taped on Saturday in Phoenix. The first thing I noticed is the crowd went nuts the moment Kairi came out. That didn't surprise me. It's more significant outside of Full Sail. Marina was wearing a mask to protect a broken nose. Percy Watson says on commentary that the big bad MMA fighters don't take Kairi and Io seriously because they are small and weak. Of course that's a fatal error because Kairi and Io are the opposite of weak. And their quickness befuddles Jessamyn and Marina. The heels get some heat on Io. But she escapes using a Sliced Bread #9. Kairi gets the hot tag and goes wild on Marina. After a double team elbow drop, Io does a suicide dive to keep Jessamyn from interfering and Kairi hit her elbow drop finisher for the win. They show Io's suicide dive on replay. That's how that move should be executed. Not surprisingly, Kairi and Io are a lot of fun to watch. Enjoy the video!
AccuRadio Song Of The Day-LoCash
Artist:LoCash
Song:I Love This Life
Album:The Fighters
The country music duo LoCash should remind you of Florida Georgia Line. It took them a while to get going due to record company problems. But I Love This Life was one of two top five country hits from the 2016 album The Fighters. They have a new album coming shortly. Chris Lucas is from Baltimore. Preston Brust is from Kokomo, IN. They started writing together and called themselves The LoCash Cowboys. They self released a 2008 album and then released a couple of singles on R&J Records. The singles charted but then R&J ran into financial problems and they were forced to take their album to Average Joe's Entertainment who released it in 2013. Meanwhile Lucas and Brust wrote hits for Keith Urban (You Gonna Fly) and Tim McGraw (Truck Yeah). They changed their name to LoCash when they signed with Reviver Records in 2015. I Love This Life reached #5 on the Country Singles chart. And then I Know Somebody reached #4. The album The Fighters followed. The album was produced by Lindsay Rimes who has worked with Kelsea Ballerini. Lucas and Brust write most of their songs. They wrote I Love This Life with Chris Janson and Danny Myrick who also wrote Truck Yeah with them. LoCash have signed with the Broken Bow Records label Wheelhouse. A release date and title for their new album has not been revealed. But the single Feels Like A Party was released in Aug. 2018. They wrote it with Tyler Hubbard of Florida Georgia Line. And they are going on tour in February. So the album is coming very soon. They should do better on a larger label. Here's the video for I Love This Life by LoCash.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Culture Club
Artist:Culture Club
Song:Karma Chameleon
Album:Greatest Hits
Culture Club was one of the most popular groups of the early 80s. Karma Chameleon was their only number one hit and they had six top ten hits. The lead singer of Culture Club was George "Boy George" O'Dowd. He was born in England but his parents were Irish. In the early 80s he was hanging around the London club Blitz. O'Dowd was gay and a cross dresser. Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren spotted him and got him into the group Bow Wow Wow as Lieutenant Lush. When that didn't work out, O'Dowd started his own band with Mikey Craig on bass, Jon Moss on drums and Roy Hay on guitar. They called themselves Culture Club because of their diverse backgrounds. They recorded demos which EMI rejected but then they were signed by Virgin Records. They were on Epic in the US. This was when O'Dowd started calling himself Boy George with an androgynous look influenced by Siouxie Sioux of Souxie Sioux and the Banshees. Their third single Do You Really Want To Hurt Me topped the British charts and became a worldwide hit. It reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. After Culture Club appeared on Top Of The Pops, O'Dowd's look became a big deal. Culture Club's debut album Kissing To Be Clever was certified Platinum. Their second album Colour By Numbers did even better. Time, I'll Tumble 4 Ya and Church of the Poison Mind were all top ten hits. And then Karma Chameleon was Culture Club's only number one US hit. The album was certified 4XPlatinum. That was the peak of their success. O'Dowd was using drugs and he also had a turbulent romantic relationship with Moss. And that eventually forced the end of Culture Club in 1986. You can get all their hits on this comp. O'Dowd recorded a couple of solo albums. Culture Club reunited in 1998 and released an album. An album was recorded and then shelved in 2016. It was released in 2018 and Culture Club toured. They are a nostalgia act at this point. But they were sure big in the early 80s. Here's the video for Karma Chameleon by Culture Club.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Rancid
Artist:Rancid
Song:Time Bomb
Album:...And Out Come the Wolves: 20th Anniversary Edition
Rancid was a big part of the 90s punk revival. They had their greatest success with the 1995 album ...And Out Come The Wolves and the single Time Bomb. Rancid are from Berkeley, CA. Lead singer and guitarist Tim Armstrong and bassist Matt Freeman were childhood friends. They were in the late 80s ska punk band Operation Ivy. After that band split up in 1989, Armstrong and Freeman made several attempts to start bands. They finally succeeded when they formed Rancid in 1991 with Armstrong's roommate Brett Reed. After performing locally and releasing an EP, they got a record deal with Epitaph Records owned by Brett Gurewitz of Bad Religion. Their debut album was released in 1993. They got a boost when Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day co-wrote the song Radio and then performed live with Rancid. They added UK Subs guitarist Lars Frederiksen to the band. The album Let's Go was released in 1994. They toured with The Offspring who had become successful. And it helped Rancid's album sales. Rancid was courted by other labels. But they decided to stay with Epitaph for the 1995 album ...And Out Come the Wolves. It did better than Let's Go. It was soon certified Gold and later Platinum. The video for Time Bomb went into heavy rotation on MTV. And Rancid appeared on Saturday Night Live. ...And Out Came The Wolves is available in a 20th Anniversary Edition with two bonus tracks. That is the peak of Rancid's run. Though not as successful since then, they continue to record and tour. Brett Reed left in 2006 and was replaced by Branden Steineckert of The Used. Rancid's latest CD Trouble Maker was released in 2017. They plan to tour later this year. Here's the video for Time Bomb by Rancid.

Big Bad Blog Video Theater-Asuka vs Becky Lynch
Here's the match video of Asuka defending her Smackdown Women's Championship against Becky Lynch from Sunday's Royal Rumble. Asuka was featured in a segment on last week's This Week In The WWE. She said her goal is to create high quality matches. And last night she succeeded in spades. Of course Becky is a great opponent. The only problem with this match is it kicked off the show and by the time the show ended, I think many fans forgot how good this match was. I don't want to go into detail because I want you to watch the match. But both Asuka and Becky were great. They beat the crap out of each other. And as the match progressed, they picked up the pace. They even got out of each other's finishers. Asuka won when she bridged out of her Asuka Lock into a neck crank. Asuka has so many tools in her tool box, you never know when she will bust out a new move. It's a great match. Be sure to watch the video.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Jacob Miller
Artist:Jacob Miller
Song:Baby I Love You So
Album:Who Say Jah No Dread
Jacob Miller was best known as the original lead singer of the reggae group Inner Circle. Miller died in a tragic 1980 car crash. Before he joined Inner Circle, Miller recorded solo and those recordings are worth checking out. He was born May 4, 1952 in Mandeville, Jamiaca. He moved to Kingston and was raised by his grandparents. As a teen he hung out at recording studios like Coxsone Dodd's Studio One. Dodd let Miller record a couple of songs in 1968. Though Dodd wasn't interested in promoting him, Miller got the attention of Horace and Garth Swaby and their Rockers Sound System. When the Swabys started their own label in 1972 and Horace started calling himself Augustus Pablo, he brought Miller with him. Miller recorded Baby I Love You So and other songs in the mid-70s. All songs were produced by Pablo and you can get them on this CD. The success of these singles led to Inner Circle leader Roger Lewis hiring Miller as lead singer in 1976. Of course Inner Circle had great success after they signed with Capitol Records. Miller continued to record solo while fronting Inner Circle. So things were going well until Miller and his son died in a car accident on Mar. 23, 1980. Miller was 27. Inner Circle was about to go on a US tour with Bob Marley. So it's likely that if Miller had lived, he would be a legend of Jamaican music. Here's a video of Baby I Love You So by Jacob Miller.

So it's likely that if Miller had lived, he would be a legend of Jamaican music. Here's a video of Baby I Love You So by Jacob Miller.

AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Wall Of Voodoo
Artist:Wall Of Voodoo
Song:Mexican Radio
Album:Lost Weekend: The Best Of Wall Of Voodoo: The I.R.S. Years
The 1983 New Wave classic Mexican Radio was the only chart single for Wall Of Voodoo. The band went through personnel changes soon after and were never the same. Wall Of Voodoo were from Los Angeles. Lead singer and harmonica player Stan Ridgway owned Acme Soundtracks, a film score business heavily influenced by Ennio Morricone's Spaghetti Western scores. His office was across the street from the punk music club The Masque. Ridgway started jamming with guitarist Marc Moreland of The Skulls and they turned it into a band. Other members were Moreland's brother Bruce Moreland on bass, Chas T.Gray on keyboards and Joe Nanini on drums. The band name came when Ridgway compared his music to Phil Spector's Wall Of Sound and a friend said it was more like a Wall Of Voodoo. A 1980 EP got them a deal with I.R.S. Records. Their debut album Dark Continent was released in 1981. Bruce Moreland left and for the 1982 album Call Of The West, Gray and I.R.S. house producer Richard Mazda played bass. MTV put the video for Mexican Radio in heavy rotation and that led to radio airplay. The single reached #58 on the Billboard Hot 100. Today the song is considered a New Wave classic. Moreland wrote the chorus and Ridgway wrote the verses. Keyboard player Bill Noland joined. They went on tour. Ridgway says there was plenty of drug use and bad behavior and shady business practices by the band's management and label. Ridgway, Nanini and Noland all left after Wall Of Voodoo played the US Festival on May 28, 1983. Ridgway has recorded solo ever since. His 1986 single Camouflage was a hit in Europe. Wall Of Voodoo continued with the Moreland brothers, Gray, new lead singer Andy Prieboy and drummer Ned Leukhardt. They released two more albums and split up in 1988. This comp mostly covers the first two albums. Marc Moreland went on to form Pretty and Twisted with Concrete Blonde's Johnette Napolitano. They split up after one album. Moreland recorded a solo album in 2002 and then died of renal failure on Mar. 13, 2002 at age 44. Joe Nanini died in 2000. Ridgway revived Wall Of Voodoo for one show in 2006. There were no original members though producer Richard Mazda played bass. Ridgway still performs live and he released his latest album in 2016. Here's the video for Mexican Radio by Wall Of Voodoo.

Gillian Robertson vs Veronica Macedo added to Feb. 23 UFC show
Nolan King of FloCombat reported today that Gillian Robertson vs Veronica Macedo has been added to UFC on ESPN+ 3 Feb. 23 at the O2 Arena in Prague, Czech Republic. This fight will be at Flyweight. Gillian is 23 years old from Niagara Falls, ON and she trains with Din Thomas at American Top Team in Florida. Her record is 5-4 and 2-1 in the UFC. Boy; did she mess up in her last fight. She was beating Mayra Buena Silva when with seconds remaining in round one, Gillian got caught in an armbar and tapped out. Mayra blew out her knee. So Gillian would have won the fight if she had survived the round. Mayra wasn't going to be able to continue. Hopefully she learns from her mistakes. I like Gillian because she likes to finish fights. Veronica is 23 years old from Caracas, Venezuela but she lives in Paris. She trains at different places in Europe. Her record is 5-2-1 and 0-2 in the UFC. She came to the UFC as a late replacement. She didn't look good in either fight. She was supposed to fight in November and she dropped out due to injury. At least she's attractive so maybe this isn't her last chance.February 23rd #UFCPrauge Ready to get back on that win streak #letsrunit #savage #championmindset pic.twitter.com/WYnOGIlM24

Io and Kairi on NXT, WWE Royal Rumble and NXT Takeover preview, Invicta FC 34 analysis and new fight announcement.
Big Bad Blog Video Theater-Io Shirai and Kairi Sane vs Amber Nova and Tanea Brooks
Here's the match video of Io Shirai and Kairi Sane vs Amber Nova and Tanea Brooks from this week's episode of NXT. Io and Kairi were supposed to be on last month's tapings but Kairi was sick. Amber and Tanea both worked for Impact Wrestling a couple of years ago. Tanea was known as Rebel. Not surprisingly, there's nothing much to this match. Io and Kairi get in all of their stuff including some excellent double team moves. We always say that pro wrestling isn't ballet. But Io and Kairi make it resemble ballet sometimes. Afterwards, they cut a promo about being best friends and Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir interrupted. That match will be taped at Saturday's NXT Takeover show and it will appear on next week's episode of NXT. Of course with the WWE creating Women's Tag Team Championships, Io and Kairi could be champs someday. They are probably the best women's tag team in all of the WWE. Enjoy the video!
AccuRadio Song Of the Day-Xena
Artist:Xena
Song:On The Upside
Album:Electro Classics Volume 2: Deep Beats
On The Upside was a hit in dance clubs in 1983. Xena is a pseudonym for legendary background singer Lisa Fischer. She was one of the stars of the 2013 Oscar winning documentary Twenty Feet From Stardom. You can watch that on Netflix. She still tours. I saw her live a few years ago. She was born Dec. 1, 1958 in Brooklyn, NY. She got into studio work in the early 80s. After appearing on albums by Kleeer and D-Train, she recorded On The Upside as Xena. Most of the folks behind this record were also behind the 1984 smash hit Let The Music Play by Shannon. It's on the same label Emergency Records. The key guy seems to be veteran session musician Robbie Kilgore. On The Upside was early in his career. He would go on to work on among other things the 1988 Steve Winwood album Roll With It. The producer is Chris Barbosa who is mainly a remix guy but he also produced Let The Music Play. After recording a couple more songs as Xena, Lisa began her backup singing career with Luther Vandross. And she has toured with The Rolling Stones since 1989. After scoring a huge hit with How Can I Ease The Pain in 1991, Lisa returned to studio work and was mostly anonymous until Twenty Feet From Stardom. She currently tours with her band Grand Baton. I saw them live a couple of years ago. Check them out if they are coming your way and watch Twenty Feet From Stardom on Netflix. Here's a video for On The Upside by Xena.

Invicta FC 34 analysis
The full card for Invicta FC 34 was announced yesterday. The show will air on UFC Fight Pass Feb. 15 at 8PM. The show is in Kansas City. The main event is for the vacant Invicta Flyweight Championship and they are having a tournament to determine the next contender for that title. The only problem is it spotlights how crappy a lot of the Flyweights are. And the other problem is Invicta has a bad habit of booking their favorite fighters instead of good fighters. So we end up with suspects instead of prospects. The title match is Pearl Gonzalez vs Vanessa Porto. Of course Pearl was 0-2 in the UFC as a Strawweight. Since then she is 3-0 in Invicta as a Flyweight. She would not be the first ex-UFC fighter to be propped up by Invicta against tomato cans. No one is fooled by this. Vanessa is not a tomato can. But she's not that good either. And she has come up short in title matches before. It's the same old same old from Invicta. The first Flyweight tournament match is Milana Dudieva vs Marina Rodriguez. Of course Milana is another ex-UFC fighter. And she's 1-2 since returning to Invicta. She is awful. Marina isn't much better. She is 33 years old from Mexico with a 2-1 Invicta record. The other tournament match is DeAnna Bennett vs Miranda Maverick. DeAnna is another awful fighter who is an Invicta favorite. Miranda looks a little better. She is 21 years old from Springfield, MO. She is 4-1. She looked pretty good in her last fight. They also have an alternate match in case one of the winners gets injured. It is Tracy Cortez vs Erin Blanchfield. Tracy is 25 years old from Scottsdale, AZ. She is 4-1 and 1-1 in Invicta. Erin is 19 years old. She won the Eddie Bravo Invitational last year. She's 3-0 but I haven't been impressed with her. On to the rest of the card. In a Featherweight bout, Faith McMah will face Helena Kolesnyk. Both are terrible. Faith is from New Zealand. She used to be Faith Van Duin. She's 1-2 in Invicta. Helena is so bad I don't know why they keep bringing her back. Even Julie Kedzie has commented about her on the broadcast and she doesn't usually do that. She's 0-2 in Invicta. In a Featherweight bout, Victoria Leonardo will face Jamie Milanowski. Victoria lost her Sept. Invicta debut to Miranda Maverick. Jamie is 27 years old from Huntsville, AL. Her record is 2-2. This is her Invicta debut. Her losses are to Nicco Montano and Cheri Muraski. In a Featherweight bout, Courtney King will face Holli Salazar. Courtney is from Fort Collins, CO. She is 1-1 and she lost her Invicta debut. Holli is 27 years old from Pueblo, CO. She's 1-0-1. Her Invicta debut was a draw. They aren't having much luck finding decent Featherweights. The opener is at Bantamweight. Caitlin Sammons will face Christina Ricker. Caitlin is 27 years old from Orlando, FL. She has a 7-1 amateur record. This is her pro debut. Christina is 28 years old from Knoxville, TN. Her record is 1-1. This is her Invicta debut. There are too many bad fighters at the top of the card. But I will be watching.
Sabina Mazo vs Maryna Moroz added to Mar. 30 UFC show
UFC Espanol tweeted yesterday that Sabina Mazo vs Maryna Moroz has been added to UFC on ESPN 2 Mar. 30 at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. This fight is at Flyweight. Sabina is new To the UFC but she is the LFA Flyweight champ. She is 21 years old from Colombia but she trains at Kings MMA in Huntington Beach, CA. Her record is 6-0. I've known about her for a while so I'm not surprised to see her. Maryna is 27 years old from the Ukraine. She trains with her boxer husband. Her record is 8-3 and 3-3 in the UFC. All her fights have been at Strawweight. The last time we saw her she lost to Angela Hill. She was supposed to make her Flyweight debut in Nov. but she dropped out due to injury. Obviously she is inconsistent and we don't know if fighting at Flyweight is going to make any difference. I guess she's at a higher competition level that who Sabina has fought in the LFA. But not too high.Señores @SabinaMazo "The Colombian Queen" 🇨🇴
