Calvin Harris is a Scottish DJ and producer. He's not a musician but he has learned to use electronic keyboards. He doesn't sing so he works with a lot of different singers. He has had his greatest success working with Rihanna. He was born Adam Wiles Jan. 17, 1984 in Dumfries, Scotland. He got into electronic music as a teen and started recording in his bedroom. He moved to London to try and make it in the music business. When that didn't turn out well, Harris moved back home and started posting music on MySpace. He got the attention of dance music festival Global Gathering booker Mark Gillespie who became his manager. Wiles didn't want listeners to know if he was black or white so he changed his name to Calvin Harris. He seems to regret that now but he's stuck with it. He signed with Columbia Records in 2006 and released the album I Created Disco in 2007. He recorded it at home. A couple of singles charted in England and Harris toured to support it. His profile in the music business was raised when he produced a couple of songs on Kylie Minogue's 2007 album X. So that gave Harris another avenue if his recording career didn't pan out. He released a couple more albums. But things began to pick up after he toured with Rihanna in 2011. Harris wrote and produced the 2011 single We Found Love and it topped the charts worldwide. It was on Rihanna's 2011 album Talk That Talk. So now everybody wants to work with Harris. His 2012 single Sweet Nothings featuring Florence Welch was his first top ten hit in the US. His 2014 album Motion was certified Platinum. But then Harris really hit a home run with the 2016 single This Is What You Came For featuring Rihanna. This reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is Harris' biggest hit. At the time Harris was dating Taylor Swift. She wrote This Is What You Came For under the name Nils Sjoberg. She said she didn't want listeners to prejudge the record because her name was on it. It was still leaked that she wrote it. Frequent Rihanna producer Kuk Harrell produced with Harris. This was only released as a single and you can get it on this NOW comp. There's not much to the song but it sure was a big hit. Harris hasn't been as successful since then and he even recorded as Love Regenerator to rediscover his roots in music. I don't think that worked. My guess is he is unlikely to have another big hit. So maybe he should concentrate on producing other artists. He does enjoy DJing live though. Here's the video for This Is What You Came For by Calvin Harris featuring Rihanna.
