AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Natalie Merchant

Artist:Natalie Merchant
Song:Wonder
Album:Tigerlily

Natalie Merchant is best known as the lead singer of the 80s band 10,000 Maniacs. After going solo in 1993, she had success with her 1995 debut album Tigerlily. These days she's more of a folksinger. She was born Oct. 26, 1963 in Jamestown, NY which is near Buffalo. Her grandparents were Italian immigrants. Natalie considered a career in special education before joining the group Still Life in 1981. They would become 10,000 Maniacs. Natalie was lead singer and wrote all the lyrics. They were very successful in the late 80s. Natalie left to go solo in 1993. She signed with Elektra Records. Natalie wrote and produced her 1995 debut album Tigerlily. There were three hit singles from the album. Carnival reached #10 on the Billboard Hot 100. Wonder reached #20 and Jealousy reached #23. The album was certified 5XPlatinum. She hasn't had the same success since then which is why I recommend getting Tigerlily as a budget CD. The one comp CD available is too expensive. Her 1998 album Ophelia was certified Platinum and one single charted. It's been diminishing returns since then. Natalie has gone into the folk music market. After three albums on Elektra, she released the 2003 album The House Carpenter's Daughter on her own label. She signed with Warner Music's specialty label Nonesuch in 2009 and that's where she is today. She is not expected to produce hit singles. Her latest CD was a 2015 re-recording of Tigerlily to celebrate the album's 20th anniversary. The 10CD box set The Natalie Merchant Collection was released last year and it includes new music she recorded with a string quartet. The album was not released separately. Natalie tours England in July. But as I said, most should know Natalie from 10,000 Maniacs and Tigerlily. She may be a nostalgia act at this point. Here's the video for Wonder by Natalie Merchant.
