Though actor Peter Gallagher has had a long career in films and especially in TV, he started out in musical theater and he has had success on Broadway especially as Sky Masterson in the 1992 revival of the Frank Loesser musical Guys and Dolls. He was born Aug. 19, 1955 in New York City and he grew up in the Westchester County suburb of Armonk. He appeared in theater groups while attending Tufts University in Boston. And after graduating, he moved back to New York City. He first appeared on Broadway in late 70s productions of Hair and Grease and he also appeared on the daytime soap Guiding Light. Gallagher made his film debut in the 1980 film The Idolmaker and then the 1982 film Summer Lovers. He then starred in the 1982 Broadway drama A Doll's Life. Gallagher won a Theater World award. He also had success in the 1984 show The Real Thing and he was nominated for a Tony for the 1986 revival of Long Day's Journey Into Night. Gallagher worked on a lot of made for TV movies until he got a lot of buzz for Stephen Soderbergh's 1989 film Sex, Lies, and Videotape. This led to more high profile film roles in the Robert Altman films The Player and Short Cuts. And it also led him back to Broadway in the 1992 revival of Guys and Dolls which ran for three years. It was very successful. A doc Guys and Dolls: Off The Record aired on PBS's Great Performances and is available on DVD from Kultur. The original cast album is available as a budget CD. Though Gallagher has returned to Broadway occasionally, he is best known for his role as Sandy Cohen on the TV series The O.C. and more recently as Deputy Chief William Dodds on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. He also appeared in a Broadway revival of the musical On The Twentieth Century which ran from Mar. to July 2015. It was intended as a limited run. He even recorded the CD 7 Days In Memphis with producer Steve Cropper in 2005. So he's a lot more versatile than you might think from his TV work.
