Chris Kenner was mainly known as a songwriter. But he scored a top five hit with I Like It Like That in 1961. He was born Dec. 25, 1929 in Kenner, LA and he moved to New Orleans as a teen. He first recorded for Baton Records in 1955 and then for Imperial Records in 1957. Kenner's song Sick and Tired was a hit for Fats Domino. Kenner found success working with producer Allen Toussaint at the Minit Records spinoff Instant Records. I Like It Like That reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1961. Kenner also charted with Land of 1,000 Dances. But that song was more successful when it was covered by Cannibal & The Headhunters and Wilson Pickett. It's an all time classic. And Kenner's song Something You Got was a top 20 hit for Ramsey Lewis in 1964 and charted for Chuck Jackson and Maxine Brown. The Dave Clark Five scored a top ten hit with I Like It Like That in 1964. The 1994 chart topper Here Comes the Hotstepper by Ini Kimoze sampled Land of 1,000 Dances. Kenner continued to record for small labels. He recorded an album for Atlantic in 1966. This comp from Shout Factory covers Kenner's entire career. Chris Kenner was convicted of statutory rape in 1968 and spent three years in prison.
