Song:I Got Plenty Of Nothing
Album:The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess: New Broadway Cast Recording
Maybe you have seen Norm Lewis as a recurring character on the hit TV series Scandal. But he is primarily a musical theater performer and he was nominated for a Best Actor Tony award for his performance in the 2012 revival of Porgy and Bess. He was born June 2, 1963 in Tallahassee, FL. He grew up singing in church. He worked at the Orlando Sentinel before getting into acting in the early 90s. He performed on a cruise ship and that led him to New York and his Broadway debut in the 1993 show The Who's Tommy. Lewis had larger roles in the 1997 show Side Show and the 2000 show The Wild Party. He also appeared for a while in 1998 on the daytime soap All My Children. He appeared in some short lived shows but got his big break in the 2006 revival of Les Miserables As Javert. And he played King Triton in the 2007 show The Little Mermaid. In 2010, Lewis was in the 2010 film Sex and the City 2 and the musical revue Sondheim On Sondheim. Porgy and Bess was written by George and Ira Gershwin and DuBose Heyward and first performed in 1935. It has been revived over the years. This 2012 revival starred Lewis as Porgy, Audra McDonald as Bess and David Alan Grier as Sportin' Life. It opened on Jan. 12, 2012 and closed in September. It is to date the longest running Broadway revival of Porgy and Bess. It was nominated for ten Tonys including Best Actor for Lewis. So the show did well. Lewis joined the cast of the TV series Scandal as Senator Edison Davis. I think that's the first time a lot of folks saw him and it may lead to bigger things. He recorded a CD in 2008. Here's Norm Lewis performing I Got Plenty Of Nothing on the OWN TV show The Rosie Show Mar. 2012.
