Artist:Old 97's
Song:Dance With Me
Album:Blame It On Gravity: Deluxe Edition
The Old 97's were at the forefront of the alt country movement of the 90s. But they were unable to break through commercially and were dropped by their record label. They returned in 2004 on a new label and they seem to be more comfortable there. Dance With Me is from their 2008 CD Blame It On Gravity. The Old 97's are from Dallas. Rhett Miller was recording a solo album in 1989 and brought in Murry Hammond to help him. After recording one album as Sleepy Heroes, they added lead guitarist Ken Bethea and drummer Philip Peeples and formed Old 97's. After releasing two CDs independently, they signed with Elektra Records and their major label debut Too Far To Care was released in 1997. Though the CD was critically acclaimed and Old 97's successfully toured with Whiskeytown, they didn't achieve the commercial success Elektra wanted and they were dropped after recording three CDs. Miller and Hammond worked on the side project The Ranchero Brothers and Miller released the solo CD The Instigator in 2002. Old 97's reunited in 2004 and signed with the New West roots music label. I don't believe the sales expectations are as high at New West. After the 2005 live CD Alive & Wired, Miller recorded another solo album. Hammond also recorded a solo album. The 2008 CD Blame It On Gravity did very well helped by the video for Dance With Me. The video pokes fun at geek fandom and features Tricia Helfer from the TV series Battlestar Galactica. The deluxe edition of Blame It On Gravity includes a bonus DVD documentary. Rhett Miller continues to alternate solo projects with Old 97's CDs. Their latest CD The Grand Theatre Vol. 2 was released in 2011 and they will tour with Drive By Truckers in March. Country rock fans should check out Old 97's.
