Artist:Jerry Bergonzi
Song:Silent Flying
Album:Convergence
Tenor sax player Jerry Bergonzi became known to jazz fans for his days with Dave Brubeck in the 70s. When he didn't like living in New York, he moved back to Boston and became a music teacher. He is still a big part of the Boston jazz scene. He was born Oct. 21, 1947 in Boston. Like a lot of sax players who grew up in those days, he is influenced by John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins and Hank Mobley. After graduating from Lowell University in Boston, he played bass in local bands and saved up enough money to move to New York in 1972. He first played with Dave Brubeck in 1973 and was a regular band member from 1979 to 1981. It doesn't seem like Bergonzi liked New York much because he moved back to Boston in 1982. He currently teaches at the New England Conservatory Of music and has authored a couple of music instruction books. He also continues to record and tour. Silent Flying is from his latest CD Convergence. It was released this year but was recorded in 2008. Bassist Dave Santoro and drummer Andrea Michelutti have worked with Bergonzi for several years. The special guest on this CD is veteran pianist Bruce Barth. Jerry Bergonzi is currently signed to Savant Records which is owned by former Muse Records owner Joe Fields. Bergonzi seems content with being a big deal in Boston but jazz fans shouldn't overlook him. Here's Jerry Bergonzi with Dave Santoro, Andrea Michelutti and trumpeter Dave Grenadier performing Silent Flying in Italy 2009.
