Disabled activist dies after battle with Bowmanville city council

Today, Jack Lakey of The Toronto Star wrote about the tragic and unnecessary death of 71 year old Bowmanville resident Wilma Paul (pictured). Wilma rode a scooter. Jack writes The Fixer column for The Star and wrote about disabled folks in Bowmanville who dangerously had to go into traffic because of misplaced sidewalk cutouts. All they wanted to do was go to a local restaurant without risking their lives.

Bowmanville City Council's response was the usual insensitive bureaucratic whining. "We're going to overhaul the area streets in a couple of years anyway. Live with it." Wilma wouldn't take it. She went to city council and challenged Bowmanville Mayor John Mutton to ride around Bowmanville in a scooter to see what it's like. Of course he declined. They fixed that particular corner but the poor state of the sidewalks is what killed Wilma. She went flying after hitting a bad spot and suffered a broken elbow & cracked vertebrae. Then she was neglected in hospital and died of pneumonia on Oct. 6. Condolences to her family. Get a lawyer.

With a civic election coming up next week, I would like to remind politicians that the disabled aren't interested in harebrained schemes or empty promises. What are you going to do to make the city safer for the disabled so we're not risking our lives every time we go out? Sorry, I forgot. We're society's dirty little secret. We're supposed to stay behind closed doors and not do anything. Journalists like Jack Lakey & Joe Fiorito don't believe that. Why don't you talk to them or someone who actually has to live with this kind of nonsense. Show us that you want to learn something instead of pretending you know everything and you might get some votes.

The thing about Motown is they've saturated the market with comps of all their artists. It's hard for consumers. So of course I Heard It Through The Grapevine is one of Motown's greatest songs and one of Marvin Gaye's greatest performances. The song was written by Barrett Strong & Norman Whitfield and produced by Whitfield. The Gladys Knight & The Pips version is worthy too. So you want the song in your collection. But this particular comp isn't the greatest. It concentrates mostly on Gaye's later hits. It's like he did nothing before 1964. Realizing that this comp wasn't adequate, Motown added a couple of songs to the 2000 reissue. I have the 4CD box set The Master. That might be a bit much for most so try the 2CD comp Anthology. It's a pretty good overview of Gaye's career. Seriously, everyone needs some Marvin Gaye. He was simply one of the greatest performers in pop music history.

Tony Stewart wins at Texas, Johnson leads The Chase

With only three races left, things are starting to heat up in The Chase For The Nextel Cup. Matt Kenseth comes into the Dickies 500 at Texas Motor Speedway leading Jimmy Johnson by a slim margin. Kenseth didn't qualify very well but that doesn't usually bother him much and he gets a good finish abyway. Also, this is the final race in the career of two time Nextel Cup champ Terry Labonte. He had a great 30 year career and is considered one of the nicest guys in racing. Brian Vickers won the pole.

It had been raining earlier today so the race was delayed a bit while the track was dried. The first three laps were run under caution and NASCAR planned to throw a competition caution on lap 40. There was no rain once the race got started. Kurt Busch-#2 Miller Lite Dodge led the first part of the race. Everyone pitted during the competition caution. Kurt Busch had a problem with a loose lug nut and was never able to get back to the front. He finished 8th. Tony Stewart-#20 Home Depot Chevy led after the pit stops.

From this point, Tony Stewart dominated the race. He had the best car. It's a good thing he didn't make The Chase. Jeff Burton-#31 Cingular Chevy blew a tire and hit the wall. He finished 38th and dropped to 7th in the points. Dale Earnhardt Jr-#8 Budweiser Chevy was running third on lap 166 when he got loose and hit the wall. Somehow his crew managed to fix the car. Earnhardt finished 6th and is 3rd in the points.

Trouble for Mark Martin-#6 AAA Ford on lap 173. Ken Schrader-#21 Little Debbie's Ford blew a tire, hit the wall and took out Sterling Marlin-#14 Waste Management Chevy & Martin. Martin finished 22nd and dropped to 9th in the points. Paul Menard-#15 Menards/Sylvania Chevy blows an engine on lap 194. Everyone pits during the caution except Jamie McMurray-#26 Crown Royal Ford & Brian Vickers-#25 GMAC Chevy. Kyle Busch-#5 Carquest Chevy takes two tires. Tony Stewart wastes no time getting the lead back but things turn out well for Busch as he finishes 5th.

Robby Gordon-#7 Menards/Mapei Chevy blows an engine on lap 256 to bring out a caution. Everyone pits and pit strategy comes into effect. Everyone will have to pit for fuel but how many tires do you take? Tony Stewart is making it look like maybe Kasey Kahne-#9 Dodge Nitro Dodge & Jimmie Johnson-#48 Lowe's Chevy might be able to catch him but they never do. Matt Kenseth-#17 DeWalt Ford is sent to the back for speeding on pit road. He tops up on fuel.

After green flag pit stops, Tony Stewart is leading on lap 324. Greg Biffle-#16 National Guard/Charter Communications Ford blows a tire and hits the wall. Everyone who pitted took two tires except for Jimmy Johnson & Kasey Kahne. But Kahne's engine fails on lap 327 and he finishes 33rd. Scott Riggs-#10 Valvoline/Cars Dodge is running third when he gets loose and hits the wall. It looks like Kevin Harvick-#33 GM Goodwrench Chevy mat have tapped him. Theres an altercation between the two crews after the race that turns into a pushing match. Tony Stewart holds the lead at the finish and wins.

Congratulations to Tony Stewart, crew chief Greg Zipadelli & car owner Joe Gibbs on the win. Big top ten finishes for Clint Bowyer & Casey Mears. Jimmie Johnson now leads Matt Kenseth in The Chase by 16 points with two races left. Phoenix is next week. Here's the top ten of the race.

While John Coltrane & Ornette Coleman were stretching the boundaries of jazz, drummer Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers were staying on the hard bop course. And Blakey continued on that course through the 80s. But Blakey's most important contribution was the many young musicians who worked for him and went on to their own successes. He recorded mostly for Blue Note but recorded for other labels too. A Jazz Message was released by Impulse in 1963. This quartet is smaller than Blakey's usual Jazz Messengers lineup. But it's still great with musicans like Sonny Stitt on tenor sax, McCoy Tyner on piano & Art Davis on bass. Art Blakey made so many great records over the years that it's impossible to recommend anything specific to newcomers. Just try out one of his records and you'll want more. Art Blakey died on Oct. 16, 1990 at age 71.

4th Junior All Star War announced for New Year's Eve show

NEO announced a couple of weeks ago the plan to do a Joshi Puroresu Summit on New Year's Eve afternoon at Korakuen Hall. There will be an Indy Summit in the evening and the reasoning is joshi should have their own spotlight and have representation from all joshi companies. It was announced today that the bulk of this show will consist of the 4th Junior All Star War. Why the 4th? They're saying that there were three all star junior tournaments in the 90s and this is in the spirit of those tournaments. It's a bit of a stretch. There have obviously been other junior tournaments including POP Princess earlier this year.

Also, NEO veteran Yuka Shiina (pictured) will have her retirement match on this show. It will be the opening match. Shiina says she wants the spotlight on the young generation. Kyoko Kimura, Atsuko Emoto & Ayumi Kurihara have already been announced for this tournament. Companies participating in this tournament include JWP, JD Star, Ibuki, NEO, Gktn, K-DOJO, Union, Gutsworld and the new Ice Ribbon fed. Ice Ribbon doesn't actually have any rookies but Sakura Emi has agreed to merge with Ice Ribbon so Gktn will have been absorbed by Ice Ribbon by then.

Clint Bowyer wins Texas Craftsman Truck race

Last week in Atlanta, NASCAR Craftsman Truck points leader Todd Bodine had a bad race. But second place Johnny Benson broke a driveshaft and Bodine actually extended his lead a bit. With three races left, Friday's Silverado 350 at Texas Motor Speedway could bring Bodine closer to the championship or it could bring Benson closer to Bodine. Clint Bowyer won the pole.

Clint Bowyer-#46 Jack Daniels Chevy led the first part of the race. Debris brings out a caution on lap 44. Everyone pits and Mike Skinner-#5 Toyota takes the lead on the lap 49 restart. Rick Crawford-#14 Circle Bar Truck Stop Ford blows a right front tire and hits the wall to bring out a caution on lap 91. Everyone pits and Skinner has problems on pit road so Bowyer gets the lead back.

Johnny Benson-#23 Toyota Certified Used Vehicles Toyota is 4th and Todd Bodine-#30 Lumber Liquidators Toyota is in 6th. Benson slows on lap 115 and by lap 125, he's out of the race with engine failure. He finishes 31st. Bodine isn't running that well but finishes 14th. They find out after the race that he had a broken header.

A Kerry Earnhardt-#13 Chevy flat tire and crash brings out a caution on lap 141 and sets up a green/white/checker finish. Kyle Busch-#15 Kyle Busch.com Chevy tries to challenge Clint Bowyer for the win but Bowyer holds him off easily and wins the race. Todd Bodine now leads Johnny Benson by 137 points with two races left. Things look good for Bodine. The Craftsman Truck series is in Phoenix next Friday.

Pro Wrestling SUN announces three way main event for Nov. 16 show

Pro Wrestling SUN has announced a three way match as main event for their Nov. 16 Shin-kiba 1st Ring show. It gives us an idea of how First On Stage plans to run this promotion. The main event features Nanae Takahashi (pictured), Amazing Kong & Toshie Uematsu. Takahashi's AWA World Womens Title is not on the line. Of course Uematsu is the veteran of GAEA. She currently assists GAMI with running THE WOMAN promotion and she freelances a lot. There's nothing wrong with Uematsu but this comes out of nowhere. I guess they don't want to do Takahashi vs Amazing Kong as they did that in July. The way this show has been booked means that First On Stage intends to save title matches and really crazy gimmicks for the Korakuen Hall shows. The next one is on Jan. 14. This kind of booking is standard for companies that run a lot of shows, like ZERO-ONE MAX for example. But if a company is new and is running shows every six weeks or so, they should try and promote all shows as important so fans will come to all the shows.

Al Green was a huge R & B star in the 70s. Most of his recordings were produced by Willie Mitchell on Hi Records. When Green decided to leave secular music and return to his ministry in the late 70s, he didn't take Mitchell with him. Green has always had that conflict in his music. He's a man of God but he also recorded some of the most sensual music in history. This 4CD Anthology includes all his hits on Hi along with some exclusive live tracks including this version of Love And Happiness. It's for completists. Al Green's Greatest Hits is probably good enough for most fans. It looks like Green has come to peace with his conflicts. He reunited with Willie Mitchell in 2003 for I Can't Stop on Blue Note. It's great music and did so well it was followed up in 2005 with Everything's OK. Al Green is back and is as good as ever.

Tom Paxton is a folksinger who came out of the Greenwich Village scene of the early 60s. He's a protest singer with a sense of humour. He never tried to turn to rock to get more commercial success but he's very durable and is still recording today. This comp from Rhino is probably a very good introduction to his music on Elektra like The Last Thing On My Mind. Now That I've Taken My Life is from his 1971 live recording called The Compleat Tom Paxton. It was his final record for Elektra. Paxton is a very engaging live performer. That's one of the reasons he has a small but loyal following. Rhino issued an expanded version in 2004 called Even More Compleat. Tom Paxton turns 70 next year and he's still performing his old songs. A live album called Live At McCabe's Guitar Shop was released by Shout Factory in July 2006. He's also written and performed a lot of children's songs in recent years.

Pianist McCoy Tyner became famous in the early 60s as part of John Coltrane's "classic" quartet. This comp is part of the recently released Impulse Story series and covers his recordings for Impulse while he was still with Coltrane. Newport Romp is the opening track from Live At Newport recorded July 5, 1963. Musicians are Clark Terry on trumpet, Charlie Mariano on alto sax, Bob Cranshaw on bass & Mickey Roker on drums. The band really kicks despite the fact that Tyner had never played with three of the guys. He knew Roker. And he was worn out from a gig in Montreal the night before. This comp is worthwhile as an intro to Tyner's music. He became more adventurous on his 70s recordings on Milestone sometimes using strings and choirs. Today he records for Telarc and released Latin All Stars in Aug. 2006.

Fuuka to defend POP title against Lily Urai

It's not exactly a big secret that I hate the JD Star Athtresses. But now the promotion has started a gimmick that may be even more annoying. A couple of weeks ago, they debuted a couple of wrestlers dressed up as pirates based on Pirates Of The Caribbean. I was hoping it would be a one time thing but it looks like they're going to be around for a while as the group is now up to four. Anyone familiar with the kind of comedy gimmicks former ARSION owner Hiroshi Ogawa would try will know that this Caribbean stuff has his fingerprints all over it. So now we have Athtresses and a comedy gimmick Yeesh!

The opening match of JD Star's Oct. 28 Shin-kiba 1st Ring show featured one of those comedy wrestlers called Caribbean RUM against idol wrestler Cherry. Cherry is not an Athtress. She works for the Union promotion. But she fits right in at JD Star. RUM is small and JD Star is trying sell her as having some ability but it's very hard to tell against someone as poor as Cherry. RAM won the match at 8:04 with a power bomb they are calling the Caribbean Ram. So they introduced her finisher. Next was a three way match with Leon, Yuki Miyazaki and a masked Caribbean wrestler called Large*, I think. Large* won in 8:33 when she threw Leon out of the ring and put Miyazaki in a clutch submission hold. Afterwards, Leon asked for a match with Large*.

The Caribbean Army theme continued with a mixed match. Caribbean KIM teamed with a guy in a mask called MORIBE against Shuu Shibutani and her surprise partner from DDT Kakimoto. The match was a double DQ at 14:15 when Cherry came in to help Shibutani and the ref lost control. Apparently Kakimoto was upset with Cherry. Obviously the whole idea is to set up this Caribbean heel stable. It doesn't seem very promising.

The main event had Misae Genki & Haruka Matsuo come over from NEO to face Fuuka & Lily Urai. Genki & Matsuo won in 18:59 when Urai accidently nailed Fuuka with a clothesline. Afterwards, Lily Urai apologized to Fuuka and then challenged her to a match for the POP title. That match will happen on Nov. 5. This is the second consecutive time they have teamed Fuuka with a wrestler and followed it up with a title match with that wrestler. Maybe they can't think of another way to do that. Also on that show will be a three way match with Shuu Shibutani, Caribbean KIM, & Sakura Emi and a four way match with Leon, Tanny Mouse, Bullfight Sora & Large*. Expect Tanny to wear a goofy mask.

John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie is one of the great innovators of jazz and an all time great trumpeter. He got the nickname Dizzy because he liked to goof around on the bandstand. But Gillespie was also a showman and an educator and was more interested than most of his contemporaries in bringing bebop to the masses. He also brought Cuban jazz to the US. This Dizzy comp was released in 2005 on Verve and includes tracks he recorded for Verve in the 50s & Philips in the 60s. This excellent version of the Gillespie classic Bebop is from the 1963 Philips album Something Old, Something New. Musicians include James Moody on sax & flute, Kenny Barron on piano, Chris White on bass & Rudy Collins on drums. It was rereleased on CD in 1998 with an added bonus track. Dizzy Gillespie's career was so wide ranging it is impossible for one comp to do him justice. The Ken Burns Jazz comp released in 2000 might be a good place for beginners to start. I'm sure I'll talk more about Dizzy in the future. Dizzy Gillespie died on Jan. 6, 1993 at age 75.

Lisa Ward returns to Smackgirl

Smackgirl has announced that Lisa Ward will return on their Nov. 29 Korakuen Hall show. Her opponent in this Flyweight bout will be Misaki Takimoto. Ward's record is 6-2 and she was victorious in her Smackgirl debut on Sept. 15 over MIKU. Takimoto's record is 6-5-3. Her most recent match was a draw against Wakako Sunayama on the Aug. 12 DEEP show. The match is scheduled for two five minute rounds.

Pancrase adds Athena match to Dec. 10 show

Pancrase has added an Athena match to their Dec. 10 Differ Ariake show. It will be a 57kg match with WINDY Tomomi vs Kanako Takeshita. Tomomi is a muay thai kickboxer with an MMA record of 9-6. Her most recent match was a KO victory over Seri on the Sept. 15 Smackgirl show. Takeshita won the 2006 Smackgirl Middleweight Next Cinderella tournament. Her record is 3-0 and her most recent match was over Mamitora on the Oct. 20 G-Shooto show. Takeshita may be new on the scene but her ground game means it won't be an easy match for Tomomi. It's a great striker against a great grappler. A win could be a breakthrough for Takeshita.

DEEP adds womens match to Nov. 19 show

DEEP has added a womens match to their Nov. 19 Toyama show. It will be MIKU vs Seri. This will be MIKU's return to the 48kg class after a couple of fights in a heavier weight class. Her record is 8-3 and most recent match was a loss to Lisa Ward on the Sept. 15 Smackgirl show. She also split a couple of matches with Brazilian Carina Damm. Seri is 9-9 and her most recent match was a KO loss to WINDY Tomomi on that same Sept. 15 Smackgirl show.

This newly released Definitive Collection is a good example of how record companies repackage classic rock groups unnecessarily in an effort to separate you from your money. The main difference between this comp and previous Steely Dan comps is it includes a couple of songs from Steely Dan's 90s comeback. Fans of the group probably already have something else. I have the 4CD box set Citizen Steely Dan which has all their 70s recordings. Why screw around? Of course Peg is from the 1977 classic Aja. Donald Becker & Walter Fagan used all kinds of session musicians on Aja. Peg includes Jay Graydon on guitar, Chuck Rainey on bass & Rick Marotta on drums. I suppose The Definitive Collection might be OK for beginners with with only 16 tracks, it doesn't seem very definitive to me. The 2000 2CD Showbiz Kids comp is better but Citizen Steely Dan is really definitive.

Elmore James was a great innovator of the blues slide guitar. Anyone who has ever played the blues on guitar was influenced by James. He started out as a radio repairman in his native Mississippi. He was a part time musician and experimented with amplifiers. His first big hit was Dust My Broom and eventually took his band The Broomdusters to Chicago. He was a very powerful vocalist too. James was one of the most popular musicians of the 50s. The problem was he recorded for so many different labels and there are so many comps it's hard to know what to get. This Blues Masters comp issued by Rhino in 2000 is OK but an earlier Rhino comp called The Sky Is Crying is a little better. in 2005, Charly released the 4CD box set King Of The Slide Guitar and that looks definitive to me. Unfortunately Elmore James did not reap the benefits of the 60s blues revival. He had a history of heart problems and died of a heart attack on May 24, 1963 at age 45.

Tony Stewart wins at Atlanta

The Chase for the Nextel Cup turned upside down last week at Martinsville when Jeff Burton's engine failure dropped him from the lead to fifth place. Matt Kenseth leads but the race has tightened up considerably. Anything is possible with four races left. Perhaps the Bass Pro Shops 500 at Atlanta Speedway would determine the Nextel Cup champion. Qualifying was rained out and owners points determined the starting order. Matt Kenseth was on the pole.

Kevin Harvick-#29 Reese's Chevy starts with the lead. Kyle Busch-#5 Kellogg's Chevy spins on lap 4 and damages his left front bumper when he touches Brian Vickers-#25 GMAC Chevy. Busch finishes 27th. He's been terrible during the chase. Dale Earnhardt Jr-#8 Budweiser Chevy takes the lead on lap 7. Tony Stewart-#20 Home Depot Chevy takes the lead on lap 27. Earnhardt has a vibration and pits on lap 30 and drops two laps down. It was probably a loose lug nut.

Green flag pit stops begin on lap 49. By lap 61, Dale Earnhardt Jr. is back in the lead. He pitted earlier and is off sequence. He's hoping for a caution or he'll go a lap down again. He gets lucky with a debris caution on lap 81. Meanwhile, Kevin Harvick is battling an ill handling race car. He'd never be able to get a handle on it and finished 31st and dropped to 6th in the points. Jeff Gordon-#24 Nicorette Chevy takes the lead on lap 114.

Green flag pit stops cycle through on lap 146 and Jeff Gordon is still leading. Tony Stewart gets the lead on lap 157 while Gordon is sueezed into the wall by Joe Nemechek-#01 US Army Chevy. Gordon has minor fender damage. On lap 169, Gordon cuts a tire and while trying to get to pit road, he's rammed from behind by Jamie McMurray-#26 Crown Royal Ford and spins out. McMurray says he was blinded by the sun. He's out of the race. Gordon has minor damage and rebounds for a 6th place finish and moves up to 7th in the points.

Tony Stewart & Dale Earnhardt Jr. swap the lead a few times. Earnhardt starts to have handling problems and drops back. Meanwhile, Jimmie Johnson-#48 Lowe's Chevy moves up and takes the lead on lap 238. On lap 248, Kasey Kahne-#9 McDonalds Dodge squeezes David Stremme-#40 Coors Light Dodge into the wall. Kahne finished 38th and drops to 9th in the points. Kahne took the blame for the crash and said he forgot Stremme was outside him.

Tony Stewart returns to the lead on lap 260. Jeff Burton-#31 Cingular Chevy hit the wall and cut a tire on lap 281. He pit and would finish 13th. A debris caution came out on lap 290. Replays showed that the debris was a piece of rollbar padding from Robby Gordon's-#7 Jim Beam Chevy. He would get the free pass but I don't think NASCAR can prove he did it delibrately. Everyone makes what will likely be their final pit stops.

A caution comes out on lap 304 when Martin Truex Jr-#1 Bass Pro Shops Chevy hits the wall. So who will pit? Leader Tony Stewart pits and everyone but Dale Earnhardt Jr. follows. He got faked out but leads on the restart on lap 309. On the restart, Kenny Wallace-#78 Furniture Row Chevy has a flat tire. Jeff Green-#66 Best Buy Chevy tries to check up but sends Sterling Marlin-#14 Ginn's Resorts Chevy into Mark Martin-#6 AAA Ford. Martin finishes 36th and srops to 8th in the points. Stewart gets the lead from Earnhardt on lap 314. Johnson passes Earnhardt for second but Earnhardt holds off Matt Kenseth-#17 DeWalt Tools Ford for third.

Matt Kenseth still leads the points over Jimmie Johnson by 26 points. Kenseth is very consistent and is capable of getting a good finish from a mediocre car. He will be very tough to beat. Of course Karen Clark Sheard is one of the greatest singers today with a legit four octave range. She's from the legendary Clark Sisters. Her mom was a great singer and so is Karen's daughter Kiki. But we almost lost Karen in 2000 when she almost died during a hernia operation. That's what the 2002 comeback album 2nd Chance is all about and Karen is just fantastic. She works with several producers and I Won't Let Go is written & produced by Donald Lawrence, one of Karen's favourite collaborators. The Chicago choir New Direction also appear. The whole album is masterful with producers like Karen's cousin J. Moss, Missy Elliott & Mike City lining up to work with her. Karen is now with Word Records and released a new album in 2006. Her music is well worth seeking out.
