Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Tuts Washington

Artist:Tuts Washington

Song:On The Sunny Side Of The Street

Album:Modern New Orleans Masters

Pianist Isidore "Tuts" Washington was a legend of New Orleans music and a huge influence on more famous musicians. He was born Jan. 24, 1907 in New Orleans. He taught himself piano and played all over New Orleans. As a recording artist, he had his biggest success with guitarist Smiley Lewis in the late 40s with songs like Tee-Nah-Nah on Imperial Records. That group split in 1953 and Washington moved to St. Louis to join The Tab Smith Orchestra. He returned to New Orleans in the 60s and played at the Ponchartrain Hotel for years. His playing style was a big influence on prominent New Orleans pianists like Allen Toussaint, Roy "Professor Longhair" Byrd & Fats Domino. Washington finally made his solo recording debut for Rounder Records with 1984's New Orlreans Piano Professor and then he died of a heart attack while performing at the New Orleans Worlds Fair on Aug. 5, 1984 at age 77. This is a pretty good Rounder various artists comp featuring artists like Irma Thomas & Walter "Wolfman" Washington. Here's Tuts Washington & Allen Toussaint performing Junker Blues from the documentary Piano Players Rarely Ever Play Together. This is available on DVD from the Louisiana Music Factory at this link

A treasured momento

The accompanying picture is from a Japanese fan blog that I visit daily. He has described it as a treasured momento. You may recall that when KAORU hit Aja Kong over the head with the desk board, the board shattered. This is a piece of that board complete with Aja Kong blood stains. He also posted a pic of a basketball autographed by Arisa Nakajima and thrown into the crowd at a JWP show. And he spent some time at an autograph session goofing around with GAMI & Manami Toyota. He acquired autographs from both. Who wouldn't want some of that loot?

Ran YuYu gets JWP title shot

It's been obvious for a while that Ran YuYu was going to be the first challenger for Kayoko Haruyama's JWP Open Weight Title. It's just that JWP finally got around to announcing it at the June 13 Itabashi Green Hall show. They also set up a #1 contender match for the JWP Tag Team Titles. It's been a while since they've done anything with those belts due to Sachie Abe's injury.

The opener was Shuu Shibutani vs Pinkie Mayuca. It was the kind of light action you would expect and Shibutani won with a Northern Lights suplex at 10:06. Next was KAZUKI vs Megumi Yabushita. Of course with Yabushita you always get judo throws and various submission attempts. Yabushita had KAZUKI in a leg hold but Kazuki escaped and hit a face crusher. This was the pattern of the match. KAZUKI escaped a jumping cross arm breaker and hit a tiger driver. Yabushita's second attempt at a jumping cross arm breaker was successful and KAZUKI tapped out at 9:03. These two will team up on June 22 against Commando Bloshoi & Toshie Uematsu.

Next up was Tojuki Leon & Kaori Yoneyama vs Arisa Nakajima & Kana. The youngsters start out with a double face crusher and display a lot of energy. But the two veterans regain control of the match. The idea is to make Nakajima & Kana look like they could be champs. So it goes back and forth with Kana and her hip attack and the veterans countering and eventually getting the upper hand. Time runs out just as Leon was finishing Kana with the Leon Stone and a diving foot stamp. The 30 minute draw sets up a #1 Contender's match on the June 22 show.

Tsubasa Kuragaki defeated Toshie Uematsu with the metal wing at 13:44. As you would expect, Kuragaki won with superior power. So the main event was Commando Bolshoi & Ran YuYu vs Kayoko Haruyama & Kei'to. Obviously the talk here has been that Ran YuYu had to drop out of the #1 contender tournament due to injury and wants a shot at Haruyama now that she is champ. In this match the two work together quite a bit and Haruyama suffers a bloody nose when Ran wins with a flying forearm at 20:00. Ran taunts Haruyama afterwards and of course the match will happen on June 22. I don't expect Ran to win though.

Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Erskine Hawkins & His Orchestra

Artist:Erskine Hawkins & His Orchestra

Song:After Hours

Album:Blues Masters Vol. 1:Urban Blues

Trumpet player and bandleader Erskine Hawkins was known as the 20th Century Gabriel. He is best known as the composer of the Glenn Miller hit Tuxedo Junction but he led his own popular big band in the 30s & 40s. He was born July 26, 1914 in Birmingham, AL. He learned drums & trombone before switching to trumpet at age 13. While attending the Alabama State Teachers College, he became the leader of the 'Bama State Collegians. They moved to New York in 1934 and became the Erskine Hawkins Orchestra. Hawkins met his idol Louis Armstrong at the Apollo and Armstrong liked to sit in with his band when they were in New York. Hawkins heyday was in the late 30s while recording for RCA Records. He was one of those trumpet players that liked to hit high notes. Other featured musicians were Dud Bascomb on trumpet, Paul Bascomb on tenor sax and Avery Parrish on piano. Tuxedo Junction and the Parrish song After Hours were his two biggest hits and Tuxedo Juntion became a huge hit for Glenn Miller so Hawkins must have made a bundle in royalties. Hawkins' swinging down home style kept him busy until he split up the band in 1953. I've featured this Rhino blues comp before and it is recommended to beginners looking to learn more about the greats of black music. He continued to remain active and recorded a reunion album in 1970. Erskine Hawkins died on Nov. 11, 1993 at age 79. Here's a very rare clip of Erskine Hawkins & His Orchestra performing in a 1937 film featuring solos by Hawkins, Dud & Paul Bascomb.

Don't look for logic in OZ Academy Tag Team Tournament

So Oz Academy ran shows on June 7 at Shinujku FACE and June 8 at the Taisho Azaria Hall in Osaka to continue the OZ Academy Tag Team Tournament. The silliness has been fun so far but I think maybe Mayumi Ozaki had a little booking brain cramp at this point. The June 7 show began with Devil Masami's retirement tour against Hiroyo Matsumoto. The pattern of these matches is the youngster isn't supposed to get much offense in. Matsumoto gets Devil in a body scissors but Devil turns it around and applies a hanging surfboard. Devil continues to work on her back and saps her strength with a reverse chinlock. Matsumoto hits two missile dropkicks for a two count but Devil hits a head butt, a lariat and finishes her with the Fire Valley at 10:19.

Next was KAORU vs Chikayo Nagashima. Nagashima tries to get the crowd going but KAORU hits a high kick. A test of strength and KAORU gets control, stands on her throat while she & Police taunt the crowd. Then a camel clutch with the usual hair grabbing and eye gouge. Nagashima gets revenge with her own camel clutch but KAORU nails Nagashima with a board. Nagashima gets the board and retaliates. KAORU goes to the top with the board but is stopped by Sonoko Kato. They go outside the ring and Police assaults Nagashima and it's the usual mess. Mayumi Ozaki & Carlos Amano get involved. Kaoru hits her with the board again. Ozaki distracts Nagashima and KAORU sprays her with the mist and hits the Excalibur for the win at 15:02.

Next was Ran YuYu & AKINO vs Takako Inoue & Hiren. This was mostly Hiren getting her ass kicked. Ran gets her in a camel clutch and AKINO kicks her in the chest. This continues until Takako hits a double lariat. Ran gets Hiren in an armbar and taunts Takako. Takako tags in and throws Ran around but Hiren is back and double teamed again. Hiren hits a dropkick and tags Takako but she's trapped in the corner by AKINO. Hiren breaks it up and Takako hits a high kick followed by a double face buster. The result is a two count for Hiren. Hiren gets an ankle lock on Hiren and follows it with a missile dropkick. While AKINO distracts Takako, Ran get Hiren to submit with an armbar at 21:11.

Next was Mayumi Ozaki vs Sonoko Kato. As you would expect. Ozaki & D-Fix gang up on Kato. You know the drill. Mika Nishio distracts the ref while Ozaki & Police beat up Kato. Kato comes back but winds up on the floor. D-Fix beats her & Nagashima up while Ozaki takes a rest in the ring. When Kato returns to the ring, she is greeted by an Ozaki chair shot to the head. Ozaki uses the chair some more. Nagashima breaks things up and takes out Police. Lots more outside interference as KAORU nails Kato with a board and Ozaki wins with the Ozakick 14:12.

The OZ Academy Tag Team Title Quarter Final was the main event with Carlos Amano and her new partner Dynamite Kansai against Aja Kong & Manami Toyota. Keep in mind that one of the rules in this tournament is immediate DQ for outside interference. Wait a minute. This is OZ Academy. The match begins with Aja beating up Amano. Toyota comes in and gets Amano in a camel clutch. Kansai breaks it up and beats on Toyota. There's a lot of confusion and near falls and Kansai & Aja exchange power moves. Amano hits Aja with a cross body from the top rope. Aja comes back with power and an elbow drop. Toyota tags in and hits a missile dropkick. Toyota hits a Japanese Ocean Suplex but Kansai breaks it up followed by more near falls. But then D-Fix comes out just to cause trouble. Hiroyo Matsumoto tries to stop them but winds up in the ring and Amano & Kansai win by DQ 15:53. I told you it was stupid. Amano was busted open over the left eye at some point.

The Osaka show began with Ran YuYu vs Hiren. Hiren attacks Ran before the bell and Police & Ozaki interfere. But Ran comes back with an eye poke and a hair throw. Hiren gets Ran in a body scissors. Ran turns it around, chokes her and follows with a bow & arrow and a surfboard. Hiren hits a dropkick but Ran hits a brainbuster followed by a flying knee in the corner and a face wash. Hiren tries a sunset flip but Ran grabs the rope. But Hiren hits a high kick. Ran blocks a second kick and throws Hiren by the hair and hits a diving knee drop for two. Then Police kicks Ran and Ozaki hits her with a chair. Hiren gets an achilles hold and follows with a neck breaker drop. Ran gets her foot on the rope. She then hits a missile dropkick but Ran counters with a blockbuster. Ran hits a running knee attack for two. D-Fix tries to interfere but are stopped by AKINO & Hiroyo Matsumoto. Ran wins with a diving knee drop at 12:40.

The Devil Masami retirement tour continues but this time Manami Toyota is the opponent. They lock up and Devil punches Toyota and leg drops on her left leg. Toyota reverses this and applies an Indian death lock. She tries for a Rita Romero Special but it doesn't work and Devil ducks outside the ring. A test of strength and Toyota gets a head scissors. Devil escapes But Toyota does her trademark dropkick into the ropes followed by a moonsault press and a cradle roll for two. Devil comes back with a lariat followed by a power bomb and a sleeper but Toyota gets her foot on the ropes. Toyota hits a missile dropkick followed by a moonsault press for two. A German suplex for two. Toyota goes up to the top. Devil catches her but Toyota reverses her attempted avalanche into a Japanese Ocean suplex for two. Devil counters with a power bomb followed by two lariats. Devil goes for her Fire Volley finisher but Toyota turns it into a victory roll for the win at 14:20. Though the two hugged afterwards, the OZ Academy blog reported that Devil was actually unhappy with the way the match ended. Maybe it's an angle.

Next was Aja Kong vs KAORU. Aja chops KAORU in the corner followed by a body slam. She grabs KAORU by the hair and Police Complains. Aja laughs and applies a cobra hold. Aja continues to pound KAORU and applies a chicken wing. Things turn around when Ozaki attacks Aja and KAORU gets a sleeper. But Aja powers out and reverses it and tyrns it into a surfboard. KAORU evades a lariat with a cartwheel. Police hands her a board and KAORU nails Aja with it followed by a running elbow. She then hits a moonsault press. She goes up for another but is stopped by Ran YuYu. She gets Aja's knees. Aja hits a lariat and a diving elbow. Police & Takako Inoue interfere and along with Aja & Ran, they're all fighting outside the ring. KAORU hits Aja with the board but Aja no sells it and it shatters. Ozaki hits Aja with an Ozakick followed by KAORU's Excalibur for two. KAORU misses a moonsault press and Aja's back fist gets two. Aja hits a power bomb but then D-Fix attacks. KAORU sprays Aja with the mist and wins with a hurricanrana at 12:47. Well, you know what happens when Aja is pissed.

Next is the first of two OZ Academy Tag Team Tournament Semi Final matches. It's Chikayo Nagashima & Sonoko Kato vs AKINO & Hiroyo Matsumoto. Kato attacks Matsumoto with kicks followed by a Nagashima facebuster and more kicks. They continue to attack Matsumoto concentrating on her injured left hand. Nagashima stomps on the hand. Matsumoto tries to kick her away but Nagashima applies an armbar and twists the hand. AKINO tries to break things up but Matsumoto does get to the ropes. Nagashima tries to get Matsumoto up for a brainbuster. Sato comes in to help but Matsumoto takes them both over in a double brainbuster. The crowd reacts to Matsumoto's power. AKINO and Matsumoto hit Nagashima with a double dropkick. AKINO kicks Nagashima's legs and applies a Boston crab but Nagashima gets to the ropes. Nagashima & Sato attack AKINO with kicks. Sato nails AKINO's back with a heavy kick. AKINO hits a standing kick and a dropkick and gets Kato in a camel clutch and turns it into an armbar. AKINO traps Kato in the corner with a face wash followed by more kicks. AKINO hits a spin kick but Kato responds with a tope while AKINO is in a sitting position followed by a heel drop. Nagashima hits a footstamp and Kato hits a German suplex for two. AKINO turns Kato's backdrop into a sunset flip for two. Akino follows with a running elbow smash. Matsumoto tags in and hits a back elbow for two. Kato counters with kicks and a German suplex then a dragon suplex for two. Kato goes up to the corner. Matsumoto catches her but Nagashima catches Matsumoto and hits a backdrop. Kato follows with a diving guillotine legdrop. AKINO comes in and nails Kato with a soccer ball kick. While she fights with Nagashima, Matsumoto gets Kato in an Argentinian backbreaker. Nagashima breaks it up. Matsumoto misses a back elbow and Kato hits a German suplex and Nagashima hits a diving footstamp for two. Then a Fisherman buster for two. AKINO tags in and hits a back elbow, kicks, a dragon screw and a hurricanrana for two. Then a power bomb. Kato breaks it up. AKINO hits a diving knee drop to Nagashima's head. AKINO & Matsumoto attempt to sandwich Nagashima but collide. Kato knocks Matsumoto outside the ring while Nagashima hits a high kick followed by a Fisherman buster and a diving footstamp for the win at 16:41.

The second semi final has Dynamite Kansai & Carlos Amano vs Mayumi Ozaki & Takako Inoue. Kansai attacks Ozaki & they double team her with kicks. Amano rubs Ozaki's face into the rope. After a diving lariat, Amano applies a Boston crab. But Ozaki turns over and kicks out and stomps Amano. Takako tags in and applies an STF accented by hair pulling. When Amano grabs her hair, Takako picks her up and gives her a tombstone piledriver. Takako's overconfidence allows Amano to come back and tag Kansai. After two Kansai kicks, Takako hits a DDT and calls Ozaki. But Kansai hits a double lariat. Kansai kicks Takako followed by a lariat on the ropes. Kansai follows this with more kicks and a backdrop for two. Amano hits a diving lariat. Takako comes back with a kick, a jumping lariat, a back throw and a German suplex for two. Takako throws Amano into her corner and she is double teamed. Takako hits a missile kick, a high kick and a back fist. Ozaki tags in and pounds Amano. But Amano hits the Carlos Ghosn and Ozaki reaches the ropes. Amano avoids the Ozakick and hits a dragon suplex. Two Carlos Ghosns and Kansai tags in. Kansai's powerslam gets two. Kansai hits a power bomb and a backdrop for two. Ozaki hits a back fist and Kansai blocks the Ozakick. Then Kansai hits a Splash Mountain for two. Kansai goes up to the top but Ozaki hits the Ozakick followed by a back fist and a diving footstamp for two. They continue to hit their finishers but don't finish. Kansai hits another Splash Mountain but Takako breaks up the pin. Then a diving footstamp for two. Finally Police enters the ring and D-Fix starts beating on Amano & Kansai. But Ozaki & Takako are DQd. Yes I know that makes no sense. It's all a big mess but the bottom line is the OZ Academy Tag Team Title Toutrnament final is between Chikayo Nagashima & Sonoko Kato vs Carlos Amano & Dynamite Kansai. Who knows what D-Fix will do?

A couple of recent Japanese MMA matches

Just wanted to follow up an a couple of recent MMA matches in Japan. Only one of the fighters involved is known and she's a little suspect. The others appear to be newcomers. A company called DEEP GLOVE had a show at Shinjuku FACE on June 15. They have MMA, kickboxing & boxing on their shows. This appears to be their second show. They had two womens MMA matches on this show. The first one featured veteran fighter Hikaru Shinohara. Her record going into this match was 4-6. She is a trained MMA fighter but she's also done pro wrestling, acting & modelling. I guess she's more idol than fighter these days. Her opponent was Kirran and Shinohara won with a sleeper hold after round one. Apparently Kirran was unable to answer the bell for round two. The second bout had flyweight Yoko Yamada KO Nanachanchin at 1 minute of round one. Yamada's MMA record going into the fight was 4-1. She's an arm wrestling champ currently wrestling for Mariko Yoshida's Ibuki. Nanachanchin is a Smackgirl veteran who hadn't fought for over three years. her record going into this fight was 0-9.

The other match was a couple of weeks ago from a company called SMOKER'S. Their whole thing appears to be an attempt to put on underground style MMA fights in nightclubs. I think they're a new company. The show was May 23 at Cantina Ebisu in Tokyo. They also do MMA & kickboxing. The womens match was with two women I've never heard of. Megumi Murata does train at AACC with Megumi Fujii & Hitomi Akano. Her opponent Mayu trains at Zen Road. It was scheduled for two five minute rounds and Murata won at 3:14 of round one with a cross arm breaker. Not much detail on most of these fighters or the fights but I think I got the name translations OK. Unknown fighters are always very difficult.

Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Blues Traveler

Artist:Blues Traveler

Song:Run-Around

Album:Four

Blues Traveler started out as a blues rock group but realized that they had to be more commercial to last and the 1994 hit Run-Around was their biggest hit and has given them the longevity they were looking for. The group leader is singer, harmonica player and chief songwriter John Popper (born Mar. 29, 1967 in Cleveland). While attending high school in Princeton, NJ, he befriended drummer Brendan Hill (born Mar. 27, 1970 in London, England). Along with guitarist Chan Kinchla (born Mar. 29, 1969 in Hamilton, ON) and bassist Bobby Sheehan (born June 12, 1968 in Summit, NJ), they would form Blues Traveler and signed with A & M Records in 1990. The group drew a strong following based on live performances and roots oriented albums. Popper was in a serious car accident in 1992 but Blues Traveler returned to the road in 1994 and released Four. I'm not sure if A & M put pressure on them to be more commercial but it worked as Run-Around reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, went quintuple platinum and they even won a Grammy for Best Rock Performance. The album was produced by the veteran team of Steve Thompson & Michael Barbiero who have worked with Metallica among others. Their subsequent records weren't as successful but successful enough to keep them going. Popper's struggle with obesity and Bobby Sheehan's 1999 death of a drug overdose waylaid Blues Traveler but they're still around. Their latest CD Cover Yourself is a rerecording of a lot of their hits and was released Oct. 2007 on Columbia. Here's the video for Run-Around by Blues Traveler.

Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-The Nashville Teens

Artist:The Nashville Teens

Song:Tobacco Road

Album:The British Are Coming

Despite the name, The Nashville Teens were a British Invasion group and their version of John D. Loudermilk's Tobacco Road was their one big hit. The group was formed in 1962 in Surrey, England by guitarist/vocalist Art Sharp (born May 26, 1941 in Woking, Surrey, England), vocalist Ray Phillips (born Jan. 16, 1939 in Tiger Bay, Cardiff, South Wales) & pianist John Hawken (May 9, 1940 in Bournemouth, Dorset, England) along with Michael Dunford on guitar, Pete Shannon (born Peter Harris Aug. 23, 1941 in Antrim, Northern Ireland) on bass & Roger Groom on drums. Sharp & Phillips named the group The Nashville Teens after The Everly Brothers song Nashville Blues. Dunford & Groom left in 1963 and were replaced by guitarist John Allen (born Apr. 23, 1945 in St. Albans, England) & drummer Barry Jenkins (born Dec. 22, 1944 in Leicester, England). Vocalist Terry Crow briefly joined the group for an extended stay in Hamburg, Germany. They backed up visiting American performers and appeared on a Jerry Lee Lewis live in Germany recording. They also backed up Carl Perkins & Bo Diddley. They were spotted by producer Mickie Most and he got them a contract with Decca Records in 1964. Tobacco Road was their only real hit. Jimmy Page played guitar on the record. This 4CD box set from Sanctuary Records has a lot of the British Invasion hits. The Nashville Teens continued to record but Most turned his attention to The Animals and took Jenkins with him. The Nashville Teens split in 1973 but John Hawken along with Dunford & Crow were part of the 70s group Renaissance and Hawken was later a member of The Strawbs. Ray Phillips attempted to revive The Nashville Teens in 1980 and later on recorded three albums as part of the cover band The British Invasion All Stars. That's what one hit wonders do in the US too. Here's The Nashville Teens performing Tobacco Road in the film Beach Ball.

St. Louis TV station features Penny Banner

John Audle of WTVI TV MyFox in St. Louis featured the late great Penny Banner on their news show last night. The feature includes comments by veteran St. Louis wrestling announcer and personality Larry Matysik, someone Penny first met when he was breaking into the wrestling business as a teen. So as a full service blog, I have posted the video clip here for your convenience. Of course it's too short but anyone interested in seeing a half hour documentary about Penny can order the DVD of Dale Barnes' Legends Of Wrestling at http://www.bannerdays.com/ This clip is still a nice tribute to Penny and I'm sure you'll all enjoy it.

Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Johnny Shines

Artist:Johnny Shines

Song:I Had A Good Home

Album:Hey Ba-Ba-Re-Bop!

Slide guitarist Johnny Shines was best known for his association with Robert Johnson but you don't want to overlook his substantial musical talent. He was born Apr. 26, 1915 in Frayser, TN and grew up in Memphis. His mom taught him guitar. He had been playing music on the side while working as a sharecropper when he met Robert Johnson in 1934 and the two went out on the road together. They traveled together for three years before splitting up in 1937 and of course Johnson died in 1938. Shines continued to play but had to take day jobs like construction work. He finally recorded for Columbia in 1946 but the recordings were never released. He recorded for Chess and JOB Records but usually worked clubs and sessions while still working in construction. Shines quit the music business in 1958 over a financial dispute with the musicians union and stayed in construction. But he started taking photos at blues shows and made money that way. Finally he was convinced to record for Vanguard's Chicago/The/Blues/Today! series in 1966 and he started recording and touring again with old pals like Big Walter Horton. When his daughter died suddenly, Shines moved his family from Chicago to Tuscaloosa, AL and took care of his grandchildren. Of course he didn't tour as much but he continued to record including this 1978 CD for Rounder Records. Shines suffered a stroke in 1980 that affected his guitar playing but he continued to record and tour through the 80s until his death on Apr. 15, 1992 at age 77. He also appeared in the documentary Searching For Robert Johnson as fans seemed fascinated with his association with Johnson. But Johnny Shines was a fine guitaist in his own right. Here's Johnny Shines performing Ramblin'.

Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Sidney Bechet

Artist:Sidney Bechet

Song:All Of Me

Album:The Fabulous Sidney Bechet

Though not regarded as highly as Louis Armstrong, sax player Sidney Bechet was the first important jazz soloist. He was born May 14, 1897 in New Orleans. He studied clarinet as a child and was playing professionally as a teen in New Orleans. In 1919, he joined Will Marion Cook's orchestra and toured Europe. He found a soprano sax in a store and that became his main instrument. He made his recording debut in 1923 with Clarence Williams. Though a brilliant musician, he moved around a lot especially in Europe and his recording history is somewhat sporadic. He signed with Bluebird in 1938 and finally recorded consistently over the next few years. The change in jazz in the mid-40s could have ended Bechet's career but instead he moved to Paris in 1950. The atmosphere in Paris gave him new energy and he made some of his best records in the 50s. This CD is a combination of two EPs Bechet recorded for Blue Note in brief trips to New York in 1951 & 1953. All Of Me is from the 1953 session with Jimmy Archey on trombone, Jonah Jones on trumpet, Buddy Weed on piano, Walter Page on bass and Johnny Blowers on drums. Sidney Bechet died in Paris on his 62nd birthday in 1959 but his final decade produced some great music that should not be overlooked by jazz fans. Here's Sidney Bechet performing Down By The Old Mill Stream in Paris 1958.

Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Craig David

Artist:Craig David

Song:Personal

Album:Slicker Than Your Average

Craig David is a very talented young R & B singer songwriter from England. He made a big splash a few years ago but his US record company soured on him and he is making a successful return. He was born May 5, 1981 in Southampton, England. His father is from Grenada and played in the 80s reggae band Ebony Rockers. David was playing local clubs when he got together with Mark Hill of the group Artful Dodger. David first recorded with the group Damage but Hill shut down Artful Dodger to concentrate on David's music. His 2000 debut CD Born To Do It was a huge success in England and when Fill Me In reached #1 on the British charts, he became the youngest male solo artist to do that. Atlantic Records signed him in the US and Born To Do It did well in the US. Slicker Than Your Average is the 2002 follow up. It did well in England but for some reason Atlantic seemed to sour on David. He did this video for Personal but it was never released. And Atlantic never released his 2005 CD The Story Goes. He continued to be very popular in England so I'm not sure what Atlantic's problem was. Craig David writes a lot of his own songs and his talent as a singer is obvious. So he signed in the US with Sire/Warner and his reworking of the David Bowie song Let's Dance retitled Hot Stuff got him back on the US charts. His new CD Trust Me was released last month. His primary producer is his longtime mixmaster pal Fraser Smith. I've been a Craig David fan since I first heard him a few years ago. It's good to see him back on the US charts. Here's the video for Personal by Craig David. The girl is Roselyn Sanchez from the TV show Without A Trace.

Nakajima regains JWP Junior Title

JWP returned to Osaka for the first time in eight years with their June 8 show at Taisho Azeria in front of 300 fans. The title match on the show had Sendai Girls' Tyrannosaurus Okuda defending the JWP Junior & POP Titles against Arisa Nakajima. They're also setting up the first challenger to Kayako Haruyama's JWP Open Weight Title. They haven't announced anything but it's likely to be Ran YuYu. Azumi Hyuga had her knee surgery. Bolshoi said her surgeon is the same one to have worked on baseball stars Hideki Matsui & Dice-K. The Haruyama/Hyuga title match is now up on Veoh and you should take the time to watch it.

The opener had Yumi Ohka vs Pinkie Mayuca. They exchange forearms and dropkicks until Ohka gets Mayuca in a Boston crab and then a single leg crab. Mayuca almost wins with a small package but Ohka goes back to working on her legs. Mayuca comes back with a cross body and an elbow drop. But she misses a splash from the top rope. Ohka hits a double arm suplex but Mayuca almost wins again with a sunset flip. Mayuca hits a missile dropkick but misses a splash again. Ohka hits a missile dropkick and Mayuca's backslide almost gets her a win. Ohka's high kick sets up her win by submission with the Bloody X at 14:16.

Next up is KAZUKI vs Kana. Kana gets KAZUKI in a camel clutch. But KAZUKI comes back with a knee to the stomach and turns Kana over for a Boston crab. Kana comes back with a hip attack but KAZUKI's strategy is to attack Kana's midsection to sap her strength. First a knee to the stomach and Kana follows her to the top rope. She gets pushed off. KAZUKI drapes Kana over the second rope and hits a knee drop. Then she hits a diving knee drop. Then another knee to the stomach. Kana hits a German suplex but KAZUKI counters with a backdrop suplex. Kana almost gets the win with a sunset flip but KAZUKI finishes her with the K-Crusher at 13:32.

Now it's time for Tyrannosaurus Okuda to defend the JWP Junior & POP Titles against Arisa Nakajima. Nakajima was wearing a new black costume resembling a French maid uniform. The Japanese love French maids. I was expecting a title change so I'm not surprised that Nakajima came out aggressively with a German suplex and a low dropkick followed by a surfboard. Okuda comes back with a toehold followed by a camel clutch. Nakajima gets control with a jumping knee, kicks and a forearm. But Okuda hits a jumping knee and a missile dropkick. Nakajima hits a swinging DDT and a missile dropkick. She goes to the top but gets Okuda's knees. Okuda hits a jumping knee but Nakajima counters with an avalanche style SPX followed by a Cutie Special for the win 10:27. So Nakajima is the new champ and Okuda apologized to her fans on her Sendai Girls blog. It wasn't surprising.

Next was Kaori Yoneyama & GAMI vs Toshie Uematsu & Devil Masami. It looks like it was designed as a Yoneyama showcase. She controls Uematsu for the first part of the match with a camel clutch. Yoneyama is always very expressive. Devil tags in and stops her with a power bomb. GAMI comes in and Uematsu traps her in their corner with kicks. But then GAMI does her rope walking with the megaphone and powerslams Uematsu. It's mostly comedy oriented with Yoneyama doing some comedy with Devil. The end comes with Yoneyama's Cutie Special being broken up but she wins over Uematsu with a rollup at 15:22.

The main event had Kayoko Haruyama, Tsubasa Kuragaki & Tojuki Leon vs Commando Bolshoi, Kei 'to' & Ran YuYu. Of course Wrestling Booking 101 has the current champ (Haruyama) facing the likely challenger (Ran) in tag matches eying each other warily. We see it so much that I'd maybe like them to do something different. The match begins with Kei 'to' kicking Haruyama and Ran tags in. The two have a test of strength. Ran gets the edge with a high kick. Leon tags in and nails Ran with a dropkick. Bolshoi tags in and does her usual lucha style shtick and follows with an Argentinian backbreaker on Leon. Bolshoi drops to her knees with a backbreaker for two. Kei 'to' tags in and Leon hits her with a dropkick. Kuragaki follows with a missile dropkick. Bolshoi tags in and Kuragaki gets her in a gorilla press but Bolshoi turns it into an octopus hold. Bolshoi & Kei 'to' double team Kuragaki but Kuragaki double suplexes them. Leon spears Bolshoi and double dropkicks Bolshoi & Ran. Then she takes Bolshoi to the floor and bangs her head into a chair. Back in the ring, Bolshoi uses her agility to get Leon in a German suplex for two. Kei 'to misses a high kick but hits an insiguri on Leon. But Leon hits her own kick and folds up Kei 'to' for two. Then Leon hits a frog splash. Haruyama's German suplex gets two. Then you have one of those elaborate moves with Haruyama, Bolshoi & Ran on the top turnbuckle. Kuragaki grabs Ran and it turns into a power bomb suplex combo. Then Kuragaki picks up Ran & Bolshoi in an Argentine backbreaker. They're flying all over the place but the end comes when Kuragaki gets Ran in a Splah Mountain but is saved by Leon. Ran blocks a lariat and hits a flying forearm for the win at 23:22. Afterwards, Haruyama confronted Ran to ask if she planned to challenge for the title. My guess is that's exactly what will happen.

Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Diana Ross & The Supremes

Artist:Diana Ross & The Supremes

Song:Stop! In The Name Of Love

Album:Forever Diana:Musical Memoirs

Your interest in this 4CD box set will depend on whether you're a Diana Ross or a Supremes fan as the emphasis is on her solo material. Motown owner Berry Gordy looked at Diana Ross as a crossover ticket more than a singer and his decision to make her lead singer caused dissention within the group. The Supremes started out in the late 50s as The Primettes when The Temptations were known as The Primes. They met in the Brewster housing projects of Detroit. They were Diana Ross (born Diane Earle Mar. 26, 1944 in Detroit), Mary Wilson (born Mar. 6, 1944 in Greenville, MS) and Florence Ballard (born June 30, 1943 in Rosetta, MS). Fourth member Barbara Martin had left by the time they signed with Motown in 1961. On the early Supremes recordings, Ross & Ballard usually shared lead vocals. And though Ballard was considered a more accomplished singer, Gordy decided that Ross had more pop crossover appeal. Of course the other key element of The Supremes was the songwriting producing team of brothers Brian & Eddie Holland and Lamont Dozier, known as Holland-Dozier-Holland. They wrote all The Supremes hits of the mid-60s including Stop! In The Name Of Love. Though The Supremes were successful, other Motown female artists like Martha Reeves resented the inordinate amount of attention given to Ross. This eventually led to dissention within the group especially by Florence Ballard. After all she started The Primettes and thought she deserved the spotlight too. Gordy fired Ballard in 1967 and she was replaced by Cindy Birdsong. Florence Ballard had an unsuccessful solo recording deal with ABC Records and died in 1976 due to alcohol addiction. The Supremes continued to have success despite weaker songs due to the departure from Motown of Holland-Dozier-Holland. Diana Ross went solo and has been very successful over the years. This 4CD box set has only 1CD of Supremes songs so it's more for Diana Ross fans. The 2001 2CD Supremes comp Anthology is better for Supremes fans. Of course I talked yesterday about Dreamgirls which is loosely based on the Supremes story so that's interesting too. But it's not based on fact. Here's The Supremes performing Stop! In The Name Of Love on The Hollywood Palace 1965.

Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Jennifer Hudson

Artist:Jennifer Hudson

Song:And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going

Album:Dreamgirls:Music From The Motion Picture:Deluxe Edition

I've always been a big fan of Michael Bennett's Broadway show Dreamgirls. Anything that gives black performers the opportunity to showcase their talents is a good thing. Henry Krieger & Tom Eyen wrote the songs and the showstopper And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going made Jennifer Holliday a star. So I wasn't particularly surprised when the film version of that same song won Jennifer Hudson an Oscar. Check out the blog archives for my review of the film Dreamgirls. Can Jennifer Hudson capitalize on this to launch a music career? She was born Sept. 12, 1981 in Chicago. She was singing on Disney Cruise Lines when she auditioned for American Idol in 2004. She finished seventh. Instead of signing a record contract, she auditioned for the role of Effie in the film version of Dreamgirls, the character based on Florence Ballard of The Supremes. She nailed it and won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. This Deluxe Edition of the soundtrack has a second CD of extras including a disco remix of And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going. Jennifer also appears in the new film Sex And The City and has a song on the soundtrack. She has signed with Arista Records and her debut CD Jennifer Hudson will be out in September. But you can listen to music from the CD on her MySpace http://www.myspace.com/jenniferhudson The debut single Spotlight will be released tomorrow and was written & produced by R & B "It Boy" Ne-Yo with the Norwegian duo Stargate. I think she still sounds more Broadway than R & B. While we're waiting for the video, here's Jennifer Hudson performing And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going from the film Dreamgirls.

Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Billy Paul

Artist:Billy Paul

Song: Me And Mrs. Jones

Album:The Very Best Of Billy Paul

The 1972 classic Me And Mrs. Jones was Billy Paul's only number one hit. But he's been around since the 50s. Maybe the fact that he was older made the song better. He was born Paul Williams Dec. 1, 1934 in Philadelphia. He started performing at age 11 and took formal vocal training at Temple University. He performed locally in Philly and recorded for Jubilee Records but really didn't have much success until getting together with legendary producers Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff. His first album on their Philadelphia International label was 1971's Going East. Paul's singing style was more jazz than soul so Gamble & Huff had to find the right material for him. Me And Mrs. Jones was perfect. It's a song about infidelity and likely wouldn't have been as effective if done by a younger singer. Paul was 37 at the time. Me And Mrs. Jones was a #1 pop hit in Jan. 1972. Paul won a Grammy for Best R & B Vocal Performance. It's still a very popular bedroom song today. You can certainly get it on this comp and it's on many various artists comps such as the recently released The Sound Of Philadelphia:Gamble & Huff's Greatest Hits. Paul had a top ten R & B hit in 1974 with Thanks For Saving My Life. He recorded for Philadelphia International through the mid-80 and retired from the music business in 1989. He still performs occasionally including this 2002 performance of Me And Mrs. Jones.

Mark "The Coward" Grimes shows his face

There was a presentation on Thursday June 5 at the Father John Redmond Catholic High School about the proposed Colonel Sam Smith Skatepark in the park south of The Powerhouse. You may recall that Councillor Mark Grimes cancelled a proposed skateboard park when the community told him where to stick it. Look, I understand his problem. It's so difficult to make any kind of deal to do anything that he has to make it look like he's doing something when he's not actually doing much of anything except pissing people off. And as you will notice, he's not reacting very well to all this.

Councillor Mark Grimes did show up to this meeting but the brazen coward stood at the back of the room and refused to face us. Instead he forced Project Manager Stephen O'Bright to take the heat that he should take. The reason for this is Grimes doesn't really have a response other than this is the only deal he can make. He doesn't get that you don't make a bad deal just to make a deal. This Skatepark is a very idealistic plan and O'Bright was under instructions to present the best case scenario and not be prepared for the inevitable questions about how feasible this really is.

The concept is to spend two million bucks to turn the woodlands of Colonel Sam Smith Park into an ice skating trail. This is obviously based on a similar successful project that is in Brampton. Currently there is a path but it isn't refrigerated. So problem number one is how is this going to change the park. O'Bright tried to minimze that but he doesn't know and he also doesn't know if this will really cost two million. Who knows what they'll find when construction begins? So the current path is going to be refrigerated and they'll even have a zamboni to clean the ice. I'm sure the birds will love that.

So the tipoff that O'Bright doesn't know anything other than the concept is he starts talking about this skate park making the park "a destination" and that this will evolve over time. He was instructed not to answer any questions about the real ramifications of this concept. So when asked about annual operating costs, he conveniently forgot those figures at the office. There's also the question of this being designed to only be used in the winter. What happens in other times of the year? And what about security and trash cleanup? There's also going to be an elaborate lighting and sound system installed in the park. And they really don't want to talk about concessions because though it's not in the plan, you can bet your bottom dollar that someone will make a profit from exclusive concession rights. He tried to put a good face on this but either it hasn't been thought out very well or we're being intentionally misled.

I suggest the latter because it's pretty clear that Mark Grimes is desperate to do something, anything to make it look like he has done something while in office. That's what the gym extension is all about. But anyone with sense knows that none of this is adequate. Most of the questions asked by the community were not directed at O'Bright. They were directed at Grimes. There were a minority in favour but I am willing to bet most of them were plants. This is based on observations I made after the meeting. If you have to do that, there's something wrong. Mark Grimes doesn't want to talk to the residents of the community. He wants to hear what he wants to hear from his staff. And until someone who has his ear tells him how foolish he is to try and get this kind of nonsense over, nothing will change. The mark of a real man is one who responds to criticism and adversity with grace and listens. Mark Grimes' legacy is that of a brazen coward not interested in meaningful dialogue with the community. We don't need him.

Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Dick Dale

Artist:Dick Dale

Song:Surf Beat

Album:Better Shred Than Dead:The Dick Dale Anthology

Dick Dale is the King Of The Surf Guitar and has been a major influence on rock guitarists for the last 40 years. He attained new found fame when Quentin Tarantino used his music in Pulp Fiction. He was born Richard Anthony Monsour May 4, 1937 in Boston. His father was Lebanese and his uncle played belly dance music so that was an early influence. Legendary drummer Gene Krupa was another early influence. He started playing drums and eventually took up the guitar. When his family moved to Southern California in 1954, Monsour began performing country music and a local DJ suggested he adopt a stage name and he chose Dick Dale. Dale was also an avid surfer and he was trying to find a way to mimic the sound of the ocean on his guitar. So he formed The Deltones and released Let's Go Trippin' on his own Deltone label in 1961. Surf Beat was the follow up and the album Surfer's Choice followed. This earned him a contract with Capitol Records and national fame with hits like Misirlou. Surf music was getting big so he fit right in. But Dale was diagnosed with rectal cancer in 1966 and was forced into semi retirement. He beat cancer and returned to music in the 80s. His renaissance came when Quentin Tarantino used Misirlou in the film Pulp Fiction. Now he's busier than ever. This Rhino comp is the one to get. He continues to tour today and many guitarists have acknowledged Dick Dale as an influence and a major innovator. Here's Dick Dale & The Deltones performing Misirlou in the 1963 film A Swingin' Affair.

Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-The Guess Who

Artist:The Guess Who

Song:Hand Me Down World

Album:The Best Of The Guess Who

The Guess Who were the first Canadian band to have a #1 hit in the US. Hand Me Down World was a top 20 hit and was recorded by the Burton Cummings led lineup after Randy Bachman left. The band was started by Chad Allan (born Allan Kowbell Mar. 29, 1943 in Winnipeg) as Chad Allan & The Expressions. They had a hit in 1965 with Shakin' All Over and Quality Records decided to sell them as a mystery group (Guess Who?) and that's where the name came from. Burton Cummings (born Dec. 31, 1947 in Winnipeg) joined as keyboard player and vocalist in 1966. Allan left and Cummings and guitarist Randy Bachman (born Sept. 27, 1943 in Winnipeg) took over the group. Other members were Jim Kale & Garry Peterson. The turning point for The Guess Who was when Toronto based record producer Jack Richardson got them a deal with RCA Records. This produced These Eyes, the first #1 US hit for a Canadian band. American Woman was even bigger in 1969. But Bachman & Cummings weren't getting along. Bachman is a Mormon and didn't care much for the rock & roll lifestyle. He would leave to form Brave Belt and then later Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Cummings brought in guitarists Kurt Winter & Greg Leskiw to replace him and Winter wrote Hand Me Down World for the 1971 album Share The Land. It was a top 20 hit. The Guess Who split up in 1975. RCA reissued this comp in 2006 with three bonus tracks. Cummings went on to a solo career and the group has reformed occasionally. Jim Kale & Garry Peterson currently lead a version of The Guess Who. They were a very important band for the Canadian music industry. Here's a video of Hand Me Down World by The Guess Who.

Memo to GAMI:Stop running weekday shows

Pro Wrestling WAVE ran Shin-kiba 1st Ring on June 4 and called it Weekday WAVE Vol. 6. They only drew 77 fans so I guess GAMI hasn't figured out that she should stop running weekday shows. She even posted an online coupon on her blog. I guess that didn't help either. It appears the plan is to have a feud between long time tag team partners Toshie Uematsu & Ran YuYu. I see two problems with this. The feud doesn't mean anything anywhere else. Of course the other problem is GAMI likes to turn everything into a gag even when she shouldn't do that.

The opener of this show had GAMI teaming with Moeka Haruhi against Shuu Shibutani & Kana. Shibutani & Kana were feuding before but I guess they're friends now. Shibutani & Haruhi begin with a test of strength. Shibutani hit a suicide dive from the top rope to the floor. She tags Kana in and Kana tosses Haruhi around. Shibutani is back in and applies a rear chinlock. So Haruhi is getting clobbered as she has since she returned. After a kick and a dropkick, Kana applies a single boston crab and then they both stomp Haruhi's left leg. GAMI finally comes in to help and holds Shibutani for Haruhi's forearm smash. After Haruhi hits a couple of dropkicks, she's double teamed and Shibutani hits a missile dropkick. They continue to double team her until GAMI comes in and hits Shibutani with her megaphone. Shibutani misses a diving foot stamp and GAMI hits a power bomb. Haruhi & Kana are back in and Haruhi does a little better with a short arm scissors. But Kana hits a German suplex. Kana gets control of GAMI but Haruhi breaks up the pin. GAMI get Kana in an armbar. Shibutani tries to break it up but is put in an abdominal stretch by Haruhi. GAMI hits a frog splash on Kana but Shibutani's missile dropkick from behind allows Kana to win with the Billyken at 18:33. GAMI and Haruhi chatted afterwards. Maybe that will go somewhere.

Next up is Cherry vs JWP rookie Pinkie Mayuca. After some feeling out, Mayuca traps Cherry in the corner. But Cheery comes back with a reverse whip into the corner followed by a flying kick followed by a reverse chinlock and a body scissors. Mayuca escapes and gets her in a camel clutch. Cherry comes back with a lariat and a missile dropkick. After kneeing Mayuca, she whips her into the ropes but Mayuca hits a cross body and rolls her up for two. Cherry gets her in a dragon sleeper. Mayuca plants her with a body slam followed by a top rope splash and a sunset flip for two. Cherry reverses for two. Mayuca hits a missile dropkick but Cherry pins her with the Spring Night Love at 9:57. So what is that? It's another rollup pin, this time from the side. Cherry's variations on rollup pins has become a running gag in WAVE.

Next is Ayako Sato vs Misaki Ohata. Sato starts with an armbar and some stomps. Ohata comes back with a dropkick followed by an armbar. Sato gets out of it and stomps Ohata in the corner. She tosses her, hits her with a butt bump. But Ohata goes back to the arm. Ohata tries a cross body but is caught and Sato hits a dropkick. She goes to the top but Ohata pulls her down. Ohata hits a top rope splash and rolls her up for two. Sato reverses for two. Sato hits a missile dropkick and rolls her up for two. Then a German suplex and Sato wins at 10:34.

The main event has Toshie Uematsu & Sayuri Okino off LLPW against Ran YuYu & Yumi Ohka. The story is Uematsu & Ran aren't getting along lately. Okino attacks Ohka with a kendo stick and rushes at her in the corner. But Ohka gets her foot up and Ran tags in. Uematsu attacks her from behind and then Okino beats her up. Ohka tags in and hits a dropkick. But then Uematsu tags in and beats on her and gets her in a camel clutch. She continues to rough up Ohka, tags to Okino and they double team her with chokes. Ohka finally hits a couple of double dropkicks but Okino ties her up in the ropes and hangs her in the tree of woe. Ran tags in and gets Uematsu in a single leg crab. She whips her into their corner and Uematsu is double teamed. Ran conyinues to punish Uematsu. But she gets caught in the tree of woe while attempting a release suplex from the top. Okino hits a frog splash on Ran. Ran comes back with a vertical suplex. Okino goes to the top for a splash but Ohka knocks her off. Then Ran tries the same and she gets knocked off by Uematsu. Ohka gets the upper hand on Okino with a high kick but Okino counters with the kendo stick. Ohka hits a backdrop suplex for two. then a missile dropkick for two. She goes to the top but Okino catches her in a suplex and follows with a top rope splash. Okino sprays her with the mist and wins with the Michinoku Driver II at 19:29. Ran didn't seem too happy with Ohka afterwards. We'll see where they go with the Ran/Uematsu feud.

Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Junior Parker

Artist:Junior Parker

Song:Driving Wheel

Album:Blues Masters Vol. 1:Urban Blues

Junior Parker was one of the smoothest bluesmen of the 50s & 60s. He's somewhat forgotten today because he died prematurely. Herman Parker Jr. was born May 27, 1932 in Clarksdale, MS. He learned to play harmonica from the legendary Sonny Boy Williamson. He worked for Howlin' Wolf in 1949 and was part of the Beale Streeters in Memphis with BB King & Bobby Bland. in 1951 he started his band The Blue Flames with guitarist Auburn "Pat" Hare. Ike Turner signed him to Modern Records. He released one single and went to record for Sam Phillips at Sun Records. He had some success at Sun including the 1953 hit Mystery Train which was later covered by Elvis Presley. He then moved to Don Robey's Duke Records and was part of the Blues Consolidated group with Bobby Bland that toured the south for several years. His version of the Roosevelt Sykes song Driving Wheel was one of his biggest hits in 1961. This various artists comp from Rhino would be a very good intro to the blues for beginners. Parker left Duke in 1966 and his recordings for Mercury & Capitol weren't as successful. Junior Parker died of a brain tumor on Nov. 18. 1971 at age 39. He was inducted into the Blues Hall Of Fame in 2001. There's no performance video of Junior Parker so here's a video of his song Stand By Me.

MAKEHEN youngsters get schooled by veterans

MAKEHEN had their very first joshi show on June 1 at Shin-kiba 1st Ring. I don't know if company owner Tomo Hashimoto is going to do more of these shows. I guess the problem with this show is all four of his joshi wrestlers are young and inexperienced and it's tough to put them in there with veterans who may take liberties with them. But he needs the veterans to draw. So the show had a squash theme to it. And one wrestler got something a little extra after she lost. Hailey Hatred returned to MAKEHEN and Alexa Thatcher made her Japanese debut.

The opener had Io Shirai against Commando Bolshoi. Bolshoi is probably the most charitable veteran on the show. The match starts with standard chain wrestling and then Bolshoi walks the top rope and gets Io in an arm wringer. Bolshoi continues to work on the arm but Io gets away and hits her with a dropkick in the corner. She follows this with a cartwheel hip attack and a face buster. Io gets more offense in followed by a 619. Bolshoi comes back with her own 619. Io hits a moonsault but then misses a second and Bolshoi wins with that Sensei stretch hold.

Next up is KAORU vs Yuka Matsuya. You may recall that Matsuya is a 22 year old actress who started training with MAKEHEN in December. Hashimoto is known to approach pretty girls and offer them wrestling training. That's how he found the Shirai sisters and Matsuya. I haven't seen her name come up in other joshi companies so I believe she has only been working for MAKEHEN. Would this be her first match against someone like KAORU? Yikes! She's very pretty but she must have that idol wrestler deer in the headlights look. The match begins with a test of strength and KAORU stomps on her hands. KAORU follows this with kicks and ties her up in the ropes. Then KAORU takes her outside the ring, slams her head on the apron, hits her with a garbage can followed by more mayhem. Back in the ring, KAORU clobbers her with a board followed by a suplex on the board. Matsuya comes back with a dropkick followed by a vertical suplex for a two count. She goes up to the top rope for a cross body but KAORU hits her with a dropkick on Matsuya's way down. KAORU hits a German suplex and finishes Matsuya with a Valkyrie splash. Obviously it was a very rough match for Matsuya.

Next up was Alexa Thatcher teaming with AKINO vs Toshie Uematsu & Kana. AKINO works on Kana's arm and then Thatcher & AKINO hit a double dropkick to Kana's head. Kana gets revenge on the floor. Back in the ring, Uematsu uses heel tactics on AKINO and Kana helps with a double team. Thatcher hits Uematsu with a dropkick in the corner. Then they both pound on Uematsu. Then Kana & Uematsu trap Thatcher in their corner and Kana chokes her with her foot while Uematsu distracts the ref. Kana follows with a suplex and a butt bump and Uematsu stomps Thatcher in the corner. AKINO tags in and hits Uematsu with a cross body from the top. Kana tags in and AKINO gets her in an armbar. Uematsu breaks it up. AKINO nails her with a high kick and sets her up for Thatcher's high kick. The end comes with AKINO's jumping cross arm breaker. AKINO & Alexa Thatcher win.

Next was a Woman Vader Confrontation between Nanae Takahashi & Hailey Hatred. Of course MAKEHEN owner Tomo Hashimoto is good friends with Vader. They're evenly matched in size and they start with a test of strength. It's mostly chain wrestling until Hailey hits a backdrop. Takahashi comes back with a missile dropkick. Hailey slams her outside the ring and kicks her in the head when she tries to get back in. Takahashi tries to come back but Hailey hits a backdrop suplex followed by a sidewalk slam and a fisherman suplex. But then Takahashi hits a Shining Wizard and they both go flying over the top rope to the floor. They fight on the apron until Takahashi pulls Hailey to the floor. They continue to struggle until both are counted out. Maybe we'll get a rematch sometime.

Next was Aja Kong vs Mika Mizunuma. Mizunuma is a bit different because unlike the other MAKEHEN girls, she's not an idol wrestler. She's a big girl kind of like...oh...Aja Kong. The match begins with a test of strength. Aja chops her but no sells when Mizunuma returns the chop. Aja proceeds to brutalize her with kicks & chops followed by a dropkick. She finishes her off with a diving body press. Holy mackeral! Aja wasn't very happy. She slapped Mizunuma and berated her for her performance in the match. Mizunuma tried to shout back but Aja slapped her again. The ref and the other MAKEHEN wrestlers tried to stop Aja but Aja stomped her again. She told her "The difference between you & me is I am a fat person who can move and you are a fat person who cannot move". That's quite a message.

The main event was Mayumi Ozaki vs Mio Shirai in what was billed as Ultimate Beauty vs Evil. Ozaki isn't going to give her a break. She will beat the crap out of her. Mio tries some dropkicks but Ozaki traps her in the ropes. Ozaki tosses her across the ring, gets her in a camel clutch and pulls her hair and bites her hand and then pulls her arms back in a surfboard. Io hits a face crusher followed by a cross arm breaker but Ozaki regains control and beats her up in the corner. Then Ozaki brings out her chain and after a brief struggle, wraps the chain around her neck and tosses her over the top rope and hangs her by the chain. Ozaki beats her up some more on the floor. Back in the ring, Ozaki misses a top rope senton and Mio hits a swinging DDT. Then Ozaki misses a guillotine leg drop and Mio hits a soccer kick to Ozaki's back. Mio hits a hurricanrana for a two count. Mio then hits her Purple Flash kick but then misses a second one. Ozaki nails her with two spinning back fists for the win. Apparently Mio had quite the bruise on her jaw afterwards.

Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Larry Graham & Graham Central Station

Artist:Larry Graham & Graham Central Station

Song:My Radio Sure Sounds Good To Me

Album:The Best Of Larry Graham & Graham Central Station Vol. 1

Larry Graham went from being bassist for Sly & The Family Stone to leading his own funk band and then a crooner. He was very good at all that stuff. He was born Aug. 14, 1946 in Beaumont, TX and grew up in Oakland, CA. As a teen he played in his mom's group Dell Graham Trio and backed up other acts while attending college. He joined Sly & The Family Stone in 1968 and established himself as a legend of the slap bass and his baritone voice was featured. When Sly & The Family Stone disintegrated in 1971, Graham formed Azteca with Santana guitarist Neil Schon. Schon would start Journey and Graham took a band he was planning to produce called Hot Chocolate and turned them into Graham Central Station. The band was David Vega on guitar, Robert Sam & Herschell Kennedy on keyboards, Patrice Banks on percussion & Willie Sparks on drums. The music of GCS was exuberant funk like Sly and the group had a lot of success in the mid 70s. My Radio Sure Sounds Good To Me is a doo wop influenced song from 1978 and features Larry's wife Tina Graham on vocals. When GCS split, Graham was even more successful as a soul crooner with hits like One In A Million You. This comp covers both periods. Graham would be less active by the late 80s mostly working on sessions. He reformed a version of GCS in 1993 and Prince produced a GCS album in 1998. Larry Graham still tours today but there's no question he's a legend of funk. Here's Graham Central Station performing Release Yourself on Soul Train 1974.

Takako Inoue turns heel in LLPW

Yeah, I know that the May 31 Korakuen Hall LLPW show was Obacchi Iizuka's retirement show. But I've never liked her old woman gimmick so I'm not going to talk about her much. There was a more interesting development in the main event featuring one of my faves. Excuse me for showing favoritism. Obacchi Iizuka trained at JD over ten years ago and spent the bulk of her career there. She was given this comedy gimmick early on and never really strayed from it much. The problem is all her matches are the same. She didn't even change it after she left JD Star in 2004 and was out with shoulder surgery for about a year. She just went to LLPW and used the same gimmick. Maybe the gimmick loses something in translation but I've never come across anyone who likes it.

The opener was fairly standard. Harley Saito defeated Ayako Sato with a soccer kick to the face at 9;20. Sato has been doing jobs in LLPW for a while now. Next was the LLPW trannies. Sawaco beat TODOE with a ballerina kick at 5:23. Next was Obacchi Iizuka's retirement match against her old JD pal Megumi Yabushita. Iizuka wore a kimono instead of her standard ring attire. Yabushita won with a flash pin in 8 seconds. This is normal for an Iizuka match. She gets pinned while she's doing her comedy shtick. The other part of this is she uses the old woman gimmick to get the crowd to feel sorry for her and the match restarts. I guess she got more serious on this occasion and busted out the Sky Twister Press to win at 13:11. That's pretty funny. They had the usual retirement ceremony afterwards. Several JD wrestlers appeared including KAZUKI, Hiroyo Muto & Sachie Abe sporting an eyepatch. Muto took the opportunity to announce her retirement at her 10th anniversary show in December. Obacchi Iizuka is planning to join her family's restaurant business.

Next up was Eiger & Sayuri Okino vs Shinobu Kandori & Jumbo Hori. The end came when Okino sprayed Kandori with mist giving her the opportunity to lariat Hori for the win at 11:51. The main event was Yumiko Hotta & Blue Wolf vs Tateno Noriyo & Takako Inoue. Takako has been heavily involved in this angle. It was the usual nonsense with outside interference and Takako using her stun gun. The end came when Blue Wolf accidently nailed Hotta with a chair and Tateno got the pin at 13:05. Actually, Hotta and Blue Wolf were quarrelling during the match. They continued to bicker after the match until Takako crossed the ring and shook hands with Hotta. Takako described this on her blog as a "magnificent betrayal". She said that the two used facial expressions during the match to give clues to this heel turn. Once a heel, always a heel. Takako seemed to enjoy herself immensely.

Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Snooks Eaglin

Artist:Snooks Eaglin

Song:I Went To The Mardi Gras

Album:Mardi Gras Time

Guitarist Ford "Snooks" Eaglin is known in his native New Orleans as The Human Jukebox because even his band never knows what classic songs he will play. He is yet another R & B legend to be rediscovered as a senior. He was born Jan. 21, 1936 in New Orleans and was blinded by glaucoma as a child. He was given a guitar at age eight and was playing professionally with Allen Toussaint's group The Flamingoes in the 50s. The nickname came from the well known radio character Baby Snooks. Eaglin recorded with producer Dave Bartholomew and Inperial Records in the early 60s and was hailed for his fluid guitar style and vocals. In the 70s he recorded for the Swedish label Sonet but Eaglin was mostly forgotten until rediscovered by Nauman & Hammond Scott and signed to their Black Top label in 1987. He remained with Black Top until they closed in 1999. I Went To The Mardi Gras is from the 1995 CD Soul's Edge featuring arrangements by former Meters bassist George Porter Jr. Mardi Gras Time is a various artists CD with a Mardi Gras theme from Easydisc. Beginners might want to check it out. The Black Top catalog is now owned by the Japanese P-Vine label and they have been reissuing some of Eaglin's recordings. He last recorded in 2002. Snooks Eaglin does perform occasionally in New Orleans but I would describe him as semi retired. He's definitely worth checking out. Here's Snooks Eaglin & George Porter Jr. performing Baby Please at the Lonestar Roadhouse in New Orleans.

Hisae Watanabe retires...sort of

One of Japan's most popular and charismatic female fighters has announced her retirement. She's left things open for a possible return. DEEP announced on their website last week that former DEEP Womens Lightweight Champion Hisae Watanabe has decided to retire and would have further details on her blog. So she got around to posting on her blog today and I was just waiting to see what the deal is.

She actually said she needs to rest. She said she's been having some hormonal problems over the last few months and hasn't been feeling well. She says it's possible that she may return to the ring after a long rest. Watanabe did marry her cartoonist husband in January and a lot of female combative sports athletes tend to retire when they get married.

Hisae Watanabe started out as a muay thai kickboxer. Her first MMA match was in Apr. 2002 but it was her win at the Golden Muscles tournament in May 2004 that was televised across Japan on TBS that made her a star. Watanabe was known for her devastating punching power but her weak ground game is what caused her worst losses. Her record was 19-6 with 10 KOs. She almost quit after losing a title match to Smackgirl Lightweight Champ Yuka Tsuji in May 2005.

But she started working exclusively for DEEP and became their Lightweight Champ when she knocked out Satoko Shinashi in Aug. 2006. The beginning of the end came when Watanabe was upset in a non title match by Korean Ham Seo Hee in Feb. 2007. She lost the title to MIKU in Aug. 2007. She had one more fight but maybe she doesn't have her heart in it anymore. She has a lot of flair so we'll all miss that but maybe she'll return down the line. Good luck to her regardless.

Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Glen Campbell

Artist:Glen Campbell

Song:Gentle On My Mind

Album:Country Hits Of The 60s

Glen Campbell was already an accomplished session guitarist when Gentle On My Mind made him one of the most popular recording artists and TV stars of the early 60s and into the 70s. He was born Apr. 22, 1936 in Delight, AR. He received his first guitar at the age of four and emulated jazz guitarists like Django Reinhardt & Barney Kessel. By age 18 he was touring the south with his band The Western Wranglers. He moved to Los Angeles in 1958 and soon earned a reputation as an excellent session musician. Campbell released some solo recordings but had mixed success and returned to sessions. When Brian Wilson had a nervous breakdown and decided to retire from touring with The Beach Boys in 1965, he hired Campbell as his replacement. Campbell turned down a full time position with the band because he wanted an equal cut of the royalties. Meanwhile, The Beach Boys label Capitol Records signed him to a contract. They marketed him as a country artist and Campbell had his first crossover hit with the John Hartford song Gentle On My Mind. Hartford wrote the song in 15 minutes after watching the film Doctor Zhivago. This got Campbell a TV variety series and the show was a big hit on CBS. Campbell had several more hits but Gentle On My Mind is considered his signature song. This various artists budget comp is very short but you can get the song on plenty of CDs. Glen Campbell was inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame in 2005. He recently returned to Capitol Records and a new CD is scheduled for Aug. 2008. Here's Glen Campbell & John Hartford performing Gentle On My Mind.

Gina Carano wins by TKO

Last night's EliteXC MMA show on CBS was a landmark show as the first live mixed martial arts broadcast on prime time network TV. It was also the first appearance of female MMA fighters with Gina Carano facing Kaitlin Young. The big story before the match was Gina's failure to make the 140lb weight. She forfeited 12% of her purse to Kaitlin. Some folks think Gina isn't dedicated to MMA. Others blame her participation in American Gladiators. I don't think Gina and her manager anticipated that AG would take up that much of her time and maybe they didn't expect a second season. It's a double edged sword. AG gave Gina mainstream media exposure that she wouldn't have received otherwise. But it cut into her training for this fight. I'll have more on the weight thing later.

Both Gina Carano & Kaitlin Young have trained extensively in muay thai kickboxing. The big difference is that Gina has a lot more experienced and is also more experienced but not yet overly accomplished on the ground. Gina came into the fight with only a four pound weight advantage. but she has a much larger physique than Kaitlin regardless of Gina's condition. The first round of the fight was mostly standing and that worked to Kaitlin's advantage. They went to the ground a couple of times. The second time Gina attempted a gogoplata that didn't end up going anywhere. They both scored and the round was fairly even. Round two continued in the same way but with about 90 seconds left in the round, Gina hit a front kick that took some steam out of Kaitlin. She followed this with several unanswered strikes. When Kaitlin went down with 30 seconds left, Gina hooked a rear naked choke. Kaitlin was saved by the bell but she would have had to tap out in a five minute round. After being examined by the doctor, the fight was stopped and Gina Carano won by TKO. Of course Kaitlin wanted to continue but she didn't look good.

So once again Gina Carano has proven the critics and the naysayers wrong by delivering a strong match and winning. Kaitlin was a very credible opponent but was clearly overpowered in the end. Gina has once again proven that despite the criticism from folks who ought to know better, she has a lot of heart and determination. My one bone to pick is with EliteXC promoter Gary Shaw who continues to put Gina in an untenable position by trying to have her fight at 140lbs. The reason she can't make weight is she shouldn't be fighting at 140lbs in the first place. I've been saying this for two years. Of course a lot of fans would like to see Gina fight Tara LaRosa but now that Tara has signed with the American Fight League, that ain't happening. Though I don't expect Shaw to do this, I would like Gina to fight in her own weight class. There was such a size difference between Gina & Kaitlin that casual fans could have perceived it as unfair. My number one opponent for Gina Carano is fellow American Gladiator Erin Toughill. Erin has said she will return to the ring this year and she is a tremendous fighter. Maybe she's too experienced for Shaw. I dunno. Other potential opponents include Shayna Baszler, Debi Purcell, Ginele Marquez, Hitomi Akano & Megumi Yabushita. With the liklihood of EliteXC starting a women's title this fall, it's time for Gina Carano to prove herself against a more experienced opponent at her own weight class. Gary, stop screwing around. So there you have it and for those who didn't get to see last night's match, here's the video.

Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Chico Hamilton Quintet

Artist:Chico Hamilton Quintet

Song:Just A-Sittin' & a-Rockin'

Album:The Original Ellington Suite

Drummer Forestorn "Chico" Hamilton is probably mest known for his series of albums from the late 50s but he's also an educator and is still touring today. He was born Sept. 21, 1921 in Los Angeles. This album is a reissue of one of his classics. He first took up the drums in high school playing with several future jazz legends like Dexter Gordon & Charles Mingus. He was probably best known as Lena Horne's drummer until he decided to strike out on his own in 1955. He made several classic albums for Pacific Jazz including this 1959 album The Ellington Suite. This album of Duke Ellington songs includes Buddy Collette on sax, Jim Hall on guitar, Fred Katz on cello and Carson Smith on bass. We now know that wasn't the complete session. There were recordings featuring Eric Dolphy on sax & flute but producer Richard Bock didn't like them so he didn't release them. These long lost recordings were discovered and added to this 2000 reissue by Blue Note producer Michael Cuscuna. So the album is recommended to Dolphy fans. In the 60s, Hamilton got involved in writing music for films and especially TV commercials. He also teaches at New School University. But he continues to tour and he records on his Joyous Shout label. He released Hamiltonia in 2007. Here's Chico Hamilton performing Blue Sands at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival as part of the Bert Stern film Jazz On a Summer's Day.
