Quilt is an indie band that is heavily influenced by 60s psychedelic rock. There are also elements of folk rock and dream pop. But I would classify them as neo-psychedelic. Quilt are from Boston. Lead singer Anna Fox Rochinski is the daughter of jazz guitarist Steve Rochinski. He is been on the faculty of Berklee School of Music since 1985. Before that he was a sideman for Tal Farlow among others. He taught her to play guitar. She was still in high school when she met Shane Butler and Taylor McVay who performed in clubs as The Good Party. They started working together while all were attending the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. Then they started performing in local clubs. Anna says the name Quilt popped into her head one day. They recorded a demo followed by a 2010 EP. After graduation, McVay left and was replaced by John Andrews. They recorded with Jesse Gallagher of Apollo Sunshine producing. The 2011 single Cowboys in the Void got them a deal with the indie label Mexican Summer. The 2011 CD Quilt was reviewed favorably. They toured to support it. After splitting an EP with the group MMOSS, Quilt returned to the studio this time with Jarvis Taveniere of Woods. Arctic Shark was the first single from the 2014 album Held in Splendor. They again toured to support it. Bassist Keven Lareau was added to the band. He is Anna's boyfriend. This album is available as a budget CD. To promote the 2016 CD Plaza, Quilt made their TV debut on Last Call with Carson Daly. I recommend Quilt to fans of neo-psychedelic music. Quilt toured Europe earlier this year but they don't seem to be on tour right now. They may be working on a new album. Here's the video for Arctic Shark by Quilt.

Old & In The Way was a one off side project led by Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead. They recorded a 1973 album, played a few shows. And that was it. It was never supposed to be anything more than a one off thing. Garcia did it because he loved bluegrass music. It was similar to the jazz group he had with Howard Wales. Not surprisingly, it's an all star band. Garcia played banjo. The rest of the band was Peter Rowan on guitar, David Grisman on mandolin and John Kahn on bass. John Hartford was supposed to be the fiddler but he couldn't clear his schedule so Vassar Clements replaced him. Hartford replaced Richard Greene during rehearsal sessions. That's an all star band. Old & In The Way released one album on Grateful Dead Records. It was recorded Oct. 6, 1973 at The Boarding House in San Francisco. Unfortunately that album is out of print. The 1997 CD Breakdown is from the same series of shows. It's much longer than the original album. Panama Red was written and sung by Peter Rowan. Panama Red was recorded by The New Riders of the Purple Sage. Most of the album is bluegrass standards. After Garcia's 1995 death and John Kahn's 1996 death, the remaining members reformed and released the 2012 album Old & In The Gray. Session musician Herb Pedersen replaced Garcia and Nashville session musician Bryn Bright replaced Kahn. Rowan and Grisman have a long history together going back to the 60s. As great as he was, Nat King Cole was not immune to the effects of Rock 'N' Roll. He had a significant dry spell before he returned to the top ten with Ramblin' Rose in 1962 and Those Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer in 1963. And that was Cole's final top ten hit. By that time he was a long way from his heyday in the early 50s with #1 hits like Nature Boy and Mona Lisa. He continued to chart in the 50s but his final top ten hit in the 50s was Send For Me in 1957. He hosted his NBC variety show in 1956 and he recorded in Cuba in 1958. He also got into movies, most notably as WC Handy in the 1958 film St. Louis Blues. And then his longtime arranger Nelson Riddle left Capitol Records for Frank Sinatra's new Reprise label in 1960. He finally clicked with the 1962 single Ramblin' Rose which reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. And that was followed by Those Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer which reached #6 in the Billboard Hot 100 in 1963. That song was called Du Spielst ne Tolle Rolle written by German songwriter Hans Carste. The English lyrics were written by Charles Tobias who also wrote the Looney Tunes theme Merrily We Roll Along. I guess Cole's longtime producer Lee Gillette was looking for a Tin Pan Alley style song. And that's how it was arranged by Ralph Carmichael. He worked on several of Cole 60s albums and would go on to be a pioneer in the production of Christian music. After this, Cole filmed the movie Cat Ballou. When he returned home, he was diagnosed with cancer and died on Feb. 15, 1965 at age 45. Despite the terrible generic cover, this budget comp is pretty good. Big Bad Blog Video Theater-Natalya and Charlotte Flair vs Kabuki Warriors
Here's the match video of Natalya and Charlotte Flair vs Kabuki Warriors from last night's episode of RAW. This was a non title match to set up a likely title match at Survivor Series. So obviously Nattie and Charlotte have to win. Of course it's lazy booking but I guess it keeps Charlotte busy for now. In this match Charlotte seemed to be off her game. There were some mis-timed spots that were her fault. That's always been my problem with Charlotte. She has athletic ability but she screws up too much. For example, she took way too long going to the top for her moonsault on both Asuka and Kairi. And then she almost missed. There were some things I liked like Kairi's blockbuster on Nattie and also Kairi making fun of Nattie's cat ears. I'm pretty sure Nattie begged management to let her submit Asuka with her finisher. Not only was that a bad idea but after the match, they went immediately to Brock Lesnar hunting for Rey Mysterio. Why do that if you aren't going to make a big deal out of it. A flash pin would have made more sense. The title match will be a different story. EDIT: This afternoon Dave Meltzer reported that the ending of this match was changed in a misguided effort to get Nattie over after her feelgood moment in Saudi Arabia. When will they learn that fans don't care about Nattie and any attempt to try to get her over will fail. It's just dopey. Enjoy the video.

The 1972 single Son Of Shaft was a top ten R&B hit for the reborn version of The Bar-Kays. Of course they were a Stax Records house band and they scored a top 20 pop hit with the 1967 instrumental single Soul Finger. As I am sure fans know, they toured with Otis Redding and several members died in the plane crash that killed Redding. Trumpeter Ben Cauley survived the crash and bassist James Alexander was on another plane. They reformed The Bar-Kays with Harvey Henderson on sax, Michael Toles on guitar, Ronnie Gordon on organ and Willie Hall on drums. This band played on the 1969 classic Isaac Hayes album Hot Buttered Soul. With the help of producer Allen Jones, The Bar-Kays decided to get back into recording their own music and performing. Alexander and Henderson remained and the new members were Larry Dodson of The Temprees on lead vocal, Barry Wilkins on guitar, Winston Stewart on keyboards, Charles "Scoops" Allen on trumpet and Alvin Hunter on drums. They released the 1971 album Black Rock. Son Of Shaft was not on the album but it was released as a single. It looks like Alexander and Jones wanted to do their own version of the Isaac Hayes smash hit Shaft. They got staff songwriters Homer Banks and William Brown to write Son Of Shaft. It reached #10 on the R&B Singles chart. And the Bar-Kays performed Son of Shaft in the 1973 concert film Wattstax. You can get Son Of Shaft on this comp CD. Unfortunately Soul Finger isn't on this CD. Beware of off label Bar-Kays CDs with rerecorded versions of their hits. After Stax closed in 1975, The Bar-Kays moved to Mercury and had a lot of success. Bill Dana was an actor, comedian and writer best known for the character Jose Jiminez. Though today this character would be perceived as offensive, he was very popular in the 60s. He even had a top 20 hit single. He was born William Szathmary Oct. 5, 1924 in Quincy, Ma. His parents were Hungarian Jewish immigrants. His mother's name was Dena so he took the stage name Bill Dana. His brother Arthur was fluent in several languages and I'm sure Hungarian and Yiddish were spoken in the home too. Dana served in WWII as a machine gunner in the US Army. He was awarded a Bronze Star. Dana moved to New York in the 50s to perform comedy in nightclubs with partner Gene Wood. Wood would go on to be an announcer on game shows. Dana appeared on several variety shows including writing for The Spike Jones Show. After writing routines for Don Adams that would later become part of Adams' shtick on Get Smart, Dana was hired to write for The Steve Allen Show. He created the Jose Jiminez character for the show's Man in the Street segment. The Submarine Officer is from the Allen show and it appears on this Rhino comp. Dana did other characters in his standup act. But he's mainly known for Jose Jimenez. In 1961 he released the album My Name...Jose Jimenez on Roulette Records. The Astronaut reached #19 on the Billboard Hot 100. The interviewer is Don Hinkley who was also a writer on the Allen show. Dana appeared as a bumbling bellhop on The Danny Thomas Show and that led to the 1963 NBC sitcom The Bill Dana Show with Jonathan Harris (Mr. Smith from Lost In Space) as his boss and Don Adams as an inept house detective. The show ran for two seasons and Adams used that character's mannerisms in Get Smart. Dana continued to appear on TV and record as Jose Jiminez until he retired the character in 1970. With changing tastes, Dana obviously thought it was time to move on from Jose Jimenez. Dana wrote one of the most famous All In The Family episodes; Sammy's Visit featuring Sammy Davis Jr. And he wrote and appeared in the 1980 Get Smart movie The Nude Bomb. And he had a recurring role on Golden Girls as Sophie's brother Angelo. It looks like Dana retired in the mid-90s and he died on June 15, 2017 at age 92. Though Bill Dana is mostly known for Jose Jimenez, he did plenty of other notable things. Here's Bill Dana with Steve Allen performing The Submarine Officer on The Steve Allen Show. Big Bad Blog Video Theater-Katlyn Chookagian vs Jennifer Maia
Here's the match video of Katlyn Chookagian vs Jennifer Maia from last night's UFC show in New York City. The winner of this match probably gets a shot at Valentina Shevchenko's UFC Flyweight Championship. The fight went as I expected. Both are points fighters with different styles. With her height and reach advantage, I expected Katlyn's "keep away" style to work very well against Jennifer. Jennifer is a boxer who isn't much good at anything else. So when Katlyn started scoring with her jab and Jennifer couldn't get inside, Jennifer should have tried something different. But by the time she did that she had already lost the fight. So Katlyn won the first two rounds 10-9. One would think Jennifer would show some urgency in round three. But she doesn't. The judges gave her round three. Who cares? Katlyn was just more conservative than usual. She knew she had won the first two rounds. She didn't need to take risks. That's what Jennifer needed to do but she didn't. Both are midcard fighters but the strategy Mark Henry gave to Katlyn was more effective. So now Katlyn gets that title shot. Valentina is a big step up in competition level. I expect the result to be similar to Valentina's win over Jessica Eye as Katlyn is at the same level. There are elite fighters in the pipeline. Katlyn is not one of them. Enjoy the video!

Cat Power has been a successful alternative rock artist for over twenty years. Her success is mostly as a touring act. Nude As The News was the first single from her 1996 Matador Records debut album What Would The Community Think?. She was born Charlyn "Chan" Marshall Jan. 21, 1972 in Atlanta. Her father was blues musician Charlie Marshall. Her parents divorced in 1979 and her mom remarried soon after. Her family moved a lot because of the stepfather's profession. So she bounced around between he mom, dad and grandmother. She started using the nickname Chan in sixth grade. She moved in with her dad at age 18. She began performing in Atlanta clubs in the late 80s. After a boyfriend died and another friend died from AIDS, she moved to New York City with boyfriend Glen Thrasher. He took her to an Anthony Braxton concert. So she was into free jazz for a while. Chan released a couple of albums independently with the help of Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley. This led to a contract with Matador Records and the 1996 album What Would The Community Think?. Shelley produced the album. At some point, Chan decided to call herself Cat Power which was a band she led in the 80s. Nude As The News was her first single and video. The song is about an abortion she had when she was twenty years old. The album was critically acclaimed. She continued to record and tour with modest success. After a five year break, the 2003 album You Are Free was more mainstream than her previous albums. It also had Eddie Vedder and Dave Grohl doing guest shots. The album sold better than her early albums. Cat has been successful since then. Her latest CD Wanderer was released in 2018 and she toured to support it. Would a big hit single help? Sure but Cat doesn't need it and Matador doesn't put that kind of pressure on their artists. Here's the video for Nude As The News by Cat Power.

Kanako Murata is the new Invicta Strawweight Champion
Last night Invicta FC 38 aired on UFC Fight Pass. There were supposed to be two championship matches. But Karina Rodriguez missed weight. That match was a three round non title match. So instead the main event was Kanako Murata vs Emily Ducote for the vacant Invicta Strawweight Championship. Kanako normally fights for RIZIN. They have loaned her to Invicta because RIZIN would have to bring in foreigners to fight her anyway. Kanako has been training with Kiaran Fitzgibbons at Combat Sports Academy in Dublin, CA. Most fans will remember Emily as a Bellator Flyweight. In her one Invicta fight, her opponent was so bad, it was hard to tell if Emily is any good. Obviously Kanako is an elite wrestler. To combat that, Emily either needed to have great takedown defense or grappling defense from bottom position. Kanako was able to get several takedowns but she wasn't able to advance her position. And Emily attempted several armbars from the bottom. I scored the first two rounds for Kanako and the other three rounds for Emily so 48-47 for Emily. And it wasn't so much that Emily came on strong in those rounds but Kanako faded badly. She hadn't fought five rounds before. One judge scored it 48-47 for Emily. The second judge scored it 48-47 for Kanako. But the third judge scored it 49-46 for Kanako. He only gave round five to Emily. I suppose we could see a rematch. All the other fights on the show were unanimous decisions. The fights were OK but nothing was great. Vanessa Porto won her three round match over Karina Rodriguez. Vanessa seemed to fade in round three. So maybe Karina could have won if she had made weight. She should kick herself for that. In a Strawweight bout, Mallory Martin beat Cynthia Arceo by unanimous decision. In a Flyweight bout, Shanna Young beat Maiju Suotama by unanimous decision. Neither of these fights was very interesting. In a Bantamweight bout, Lisa Verszosa beat Kerri Kenneson by unanimous decision. Kerri won the first round and then faded. I wouldn't be surprised to see Lisa in the UFC very soon. In a Featherweight bout, Autumn Norton beat Yaya Rincon by unanimous decision. This was Yaya's return after two years off to have a baby. She now trains at Combat Sports Academy in Dublin, CA. She didn't look as good as I remember from a couple of years ago. And in the Bantamweight opener, Taneisha Tennant beat Serena DeJesus by unanimous decision. Taneisha looked good but it was mentioned on the broadcast that she has enlisted in the US Navy. So she might have limited availability. As I said, the show as a whole was lackluster. It just seems like a lot of these fighters aren't very aggressive.キリアンコーチ、山崎さん本当にありがとうございます！

The 1999 single Summer Girls was one of two top ten hits for LFO. Fans may remember the song but LFO only recorded two albums before splitting up. They were from New Bedford, MA. Rich Cronin and Brad Fischetti met Brian "Brizz" Gillis in 1995. They called themselves Lyte Funkie Ones. They released a couple of singles on Lou Pearlman's Trans Continental label that had modest success in Europe. Pearlman also managed The Backstreet Boys. Gillis left to go solo in 1999 and eventually worked for BMG as a promo man. After auditions, Devin Lima joined and suggested the group name be shortened to LFO. They recorded an album and Trans Continental licensed it to Arista. Summer Girls reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Girl on TV reached #10. The album was certified Platinum. At the time, LFO was perceived as a boy band similar to The Backstreet Boys because they were on the same label. But Cronin wrote all the songs including Summer Girls and he produced with Dow Brain and Brad Young of Underground Productions. Cronin wrote Summer Girls as a joke. It was only supposed to be a demo. But it leaked out and much to Cronin's surprise, the song became a hit. The song was notable for all the pop culture references. LFO released the 2001 album Life Is Good. It didn't do as well as the first album. There were no hit singles. LFO thought music tastes were changing so they decided to split up. After a couple of bands didn't work out, Cronin was in the cast of the 2007 VH1 show Mission: Man Band. He was diagnosed with leukemia in 2005. Cronin released a 2008 solo album. Lima released a couple of singles and formed Cadbury Diesel in 2008. LFO reunited for a brief tour in 2009. Cronin died on Sept. 8, 2010 at age 36. Fischetti and Lima reunited in 2017 and released a single. They planned to record an album as LFO. But then Lima was diagnosed with cancer and he died on Nov. 20, 2018 at age 41. So a sad end to a band that scored a hit with a fun single. Here's the video for Summer Girls by LFO.

Mario Winans was a house producer at Sean "P. Diddy" Combs' Bad Boy Entertainment. He has only recorded two albums as a singer. I Don't Wanna Know was a top five hit in 2004. He was born Mario Brown Aug. 29, 1974 in Orangeburg, SC. His father is Pastor Ronald E. Brown. When his parents divorced, his mother married Marvin Winans of the Winans gospel music family. He took the Winans surname. His mother is singer Vickie Winans. Taking the stepfather's surname is not unusual except in this case it's a famous surname. Winans started producing and writing right after he graduated from high school. His first producer credit was for his mom's 1991 album The Lady. He also produced Anointed, Pebbles and Tamia. Winans joined Motown as a staff producer and he released the 1997 album Story of my Heart. That album went nowhere and Winans left Motown for Bad Boy in 1999. Among others, he produced Total, Carl Thomas and P. Diddy himself. His biggest hit at the time was the 2001 single Peaches & Creme for 112. Then Winans released the 2004 album Hurt No More. I Don't Wanna Know reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song is based on a sample from The Fugees 1996 single Ready Or Not. That sampled the 1987 Enya song Boadicea. Bad Boy forgot to credit Enya so they had to fork over plenty of cash and give her a "featuring" credit though she doesn't appear on the record. Of course P. Diddy does the rap. The album is available as a budget CD. Though Winans hasn't recorded since then, he continues to produce hits for mostly Bad Boy artists and plenty of others. Big Bad Blog Video Theater-Hikaru Shida vs Shanna
Here's the match video of Hikaru Shida vs Shanna from last night's AEW show. Hikaru finally moved to the US a few days ago. So I expect that we will see her more frequently on AEW TV. Shanna is from France. Her wrestling experience is mostly in Europe though she also worked for Stardom a few years ago. My big problem with her is at 37 years old, she's more suspect than prospect. The match was probably too long. I would have preferred a squash especially if AEW is planning to build Hikaru up. Shanna got in way too much offense and her offense isn't very good. Hikaru looked good at times. AEW hasn't really given her a defined role yet. But now that she's in the US, they should be able to do that. This match was to reintroduce Hikaru to the audience. Big Bad Blog Video Theater-Kabuki Warriors vs Tegan Nox and Dakota Kai
Here's the match video of the Kabuki Warriors defending the WWE Women's Tag Team Championships vs Tegan Nox and Dakota Kai. Mauro Ranallo compares the Kabuki Warriors the The Beauty Pair or The Jumping Bomb Angels. But I would compare them to The Black Pair or Dump Matsumoto and Bull Nakano. All Asuka needs is a fork to stab her opponents. Asuka and Kairi dominate for the most part focusing on Dakota's knee. They tear her apart for most of the match. Then when Dakota finally makes the tag, they go after Tegan's knee. So they aren't messing around. The end comes when Kairi distracts the ref. Asuka sprays Dakota with the mist and Kairi hit the Insane Elbow for the win. Afterwards, Shayna Baszler and company come down to add insult to injury. This leads to a schmazel with Rhea Ripley, Io Shirai, Bianca Belair and Candice LeRae and William Regal's announcement of a women's War Games. I expect Mia Yim to be added to this match. Big Bad Blog Video Theater-Io Shirai vs Candice LeRae
Here's the match video of Io Shirai vs Candice LeRae from last night's episode of NXT. This led off the show starting with Poppy performing Io's theme live during Io's entrance. That should get your attention. I don't think it's as good as their Takeover match. This is a lot shorter than that match. And also they block each other's moves because Candice knows what Io will do and vice versa. But it's still really good. Among other things, Io sells Candice's tornado DDT like she was really injured. Candice is bleeding from the nose and at one point Io smears the blood. So the match is very much a chess match. The end comes when Io grabs a chair from beneath the ring. The ref stops her from using it. But it's still in the ring. Candice attempts a quebrada from the middle rope. Io moves and Candice hits the chair face first. That's it. Another big win for Io Shirai. Io continues to attack Candice. And just as she's about to hit her with the chair, Rhea Ripley makes the save. Io powders. As you will see, this will continue later and William Regal will announce the very first women's War Games match. More on this shortly. Enjoy the video!

Twin sisters Nicole and Natalie Albino are known as Nina Sky. Move Ya Body was a top five hit in 2004. They are still around but I don't see them having another hit single. They were born Mar. 13, 1984 in Puerto Rico but they grew up in Astoria, Queens, NY. Their parents divorced when they were young. Their stepfather was a DJ and that got them into music. In 2003 they auditioned for the production company The Jettsonz Inc. They got them a deal with Next Plateau and introduced them to DJ, MTV VJ and comedian Luis "Cipha Sounds" Diaz. He produced the 2004 album Nina Sky. Move Ya Body was the first single and it reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Diaz suggested the Albino twins base a song on the Jamaican Dance Hall "Coolie Dance" rhythm. They wrote and produced with Diaz, The Jettsonz (Elijah Wells and Lionel Bermingham) and producer Cordel Burrell. The album was certified Gold. Jabba is the rapper on this song. It seems to be his only credit. There is a remix featuring Vybz Kartel. Though Nina Sky released a mixtape in 2005, it appears they had record company problems. The music video was pulled which is why it's hard to find and in poor quality. While working on a second album, they left Next Plateau for Sony's Polo Grounds label. After a couple of unsuccessful singles were released, Polo Grounds cancelled the album and Nina Sky left. They finally released an album independently in 2012. Nina Sky signed with Warner's Tommy Boy label in 2016. Supposedly an album is on the way. Meanwhile they continue to tour and release mixtapes. Sleater-Kinney were at the forefront of the late 90s post punk scene. They are mainly an album and touring band. Dig Me Out is one of their signature songs. They were formed in 1994 in Olympia, WA by lead singer Corin Tucker and guitarist Carrie Brownstein. The name was the location of their practice space. They were in other bands so Sleater-Kinney started as a side project. But when their other bands split up, Sleater-Kinney became their main focus. They went through several drummers until Janet Weiss joined in 1996 and she was in the band for most of their run. Dig Me Out was their third album in 1997. It was their first album the label Kill Rock Stars. Producer John Goodmanson has produced similar bands like Bikini Kill. The album made Sleater-Kinney critic's darlings. They never had a hit single. They didn't need one. They were constantly on tour and it becomes a grind. They moved to Sub Pop for the 2005 album The Woods. And after touring, they went on hiatus. Corin released a couple of solo albums. Carrie formed Wild Flag with Janet. They released one album. Carrie also starred in the IFC TV series Portlandia which ran from 2011 to 2018. Sleater-Kinney reformed and released a new album in 2015. They just released a new album in August. Janet has left and Angie Boylan has replaced her. Sleater-Kinney is currently on tour. Big Bad Blog Video Theater-Becky Lynch vs Kairi Sane
Here's the match video of Becky Lynch vs Kairi Sane from last night's episode of Raw. This opened the show. Paige came out and introduced the Kabuki Warriors. Paige has been away having neck surgery. I guess no one told her about their heel turn. Both are wearing new gear. Kairi is dressed in black. And instead of her pirate stuff, she is carrying a parasol. Asuka seems to be wearing black gear that she wore a few years ago. She probably has all her old outfits in storage at home. So Asuka gets tired of Paige yakking and she sprays her with the mist. And then Becky comes out and the match is started after the commercial. This is the best match Becky has had in months. This was Kairi's first opportunity on the main roster to have enough time to show what she can do. It's a great competitive match so be sure you watch it. As I said on Sunday's podcast, the finish doesn't matter much. They could have even done a non finish. After Becky took out Asuka on the floor, Kairi hit a spinning back fist for a near fall and Becky turned it into her armbar finisher. It wasn't a squash so the loss doesn't hurt Kairi at all. Fans already want to see more of her. And a performance like this should get her more TV time. Eventually this should lead to a Becky vs Asuka program hopefully for several months. Meanwhile the Kabuki Warriors will defend the WWE Women's Tag Team Championships vs Tegan Nox and Dakota Kai on this week's episode of NXT. Until then, enjoy the video.
